Researching a piece I’m doing on Bright’s race, I came across this quote, from Bright’s Republican opponent, Martha Roby: “Our congressman voted for Nancy Pelosi as Speaker of the House. How he voted any other time is irrelevant.” That sentiment encapsulates the degree to which Pelosi is toxic baggage for Democrats like Bright, who seems to have concluded his best route to reelection is to paper over any traces of his party affiliation. And yet, the fact that this may Roby’s best line of attack also underlines how Bright, who has opposed the controversial linchpins of the Democratic legislative agenda this session, has a good shot at hanging onto his seat in a deeply conservative district.
