Perhaps The Best Senate Race In America: Following The Fun In The Florida Sun
Ah, Florida: Scarface, Disney, Golden Girls, Seinfeld's parents, Tiger, Elian, Crockett, Tubbs, sugar, swamps, spring training, LMFAO, oranges, chads, (Jimmy) Buffett, Marino, Lebron and so much more, including one of the most exciting Senate races in the country this cycle, a three-way match up between conservative wonder boy Marco Rubio, the bronzed chameleon Charlie Crist and one of two democratic contenders, the highway patrol congressman, Kendrick Meek, and a billionaire named Jeff Greene, whose Morrocan love den was once featured in Vanity Fair.
Beyond the obvious, here are five reasons the Sunshine State will be worth watching this year:
1. In most elections there is a battle for the middle, leading to bland nothingisms on the stump. But since this race will be a three way race, it is likely that each candidate will have a different route to victory. Rubio will need to hold the Republican vote, capture some of the anti-incumbent dissatisfaction, and get huge voter turnout at the polls. If Meek wins the primary, he can run a similar race, focused mainly on denying Crist the 30 to 45 percent of the Democratic vote the governor needs to win. Crist's job will be to convince Floridians that party labels are as outmoded as Capitol building spittoons. He will be trying to hold as much as a quarter of the Republican vote, while grabbing a chunk of the Democratic base. If Greene wins the primary, he will likely spend great gobs of his fortune on television in a so-far less-than-successful attempt to tamp down voter skepticism of a man called the "meltdown mogul" by the Wall Street Journal who decorated his Beverly Hills home with "two huge erotic paintings" and a "dark metal rendering of a dollar bill."
2. The race is already creating great tensions within the Democratic establishment. In recent months, three key Democratic aides have signed on to the Crist campaign: Josh Isay, a former chief of staff to Democratic Senate boss Chuck Schumer; Eric Johnson, the former chief of staff to onetime Florida Rep. Eric Wexler; and Democratic pollster Keith Frederick, who also has worked for the Florida Education Association, Unite Here and Virginia Sen. Mark Warner. Crist has not said whether or not he will caucus with Democrats, but the fact that Crist attracted such high profile talent suggests Senate leaders want to encourage the possibility. As political handicapper Charlie Cook put it, rather diplomatically, "The conventional wisdom is that Isay would not have taken on Crist as a client if there were strong objections from the Democratic Senate Leadership."
3. This has predictably infuriated allies of Meek, who have been calling for a much more vocal and direct support from President Obama. "Come on down and show me that you mean it," Alcee Hastings, a Florida congressman and Meek booster, told me Tuesday. "I need to see him say it." Hastings called the recent image of Obama walking Pensacola's white sand beaches in shirtsleeves with Crist, "this haunting picture." In response, the White House has restated Obama's Meek endorsement and Rahm Emanuel has scheduled a fundraiser on Meek's behalf. But that is not enough for supporters like Hastings, who have threatened to withhold campaign aide from Obama in 2012 if the president does not do more. Some suspect history may be at work here as well: In 2008, relations between Meek and the Obama team were not so good after Meek decided to endorse Hillary Clinton.
4. The characters are larger than life. The Greene biography, as has been noted, does not exactly scream Democratic candidate for Senate. (He once offered a place to live to Hollywood madam Heidi Fleiss and he previously ran for office in California as a Republican.) Crist, who just two years ago was a campaign prop on John McCain's campaign, is boldly remaking himself in ways that could even shock Mitt Romney's political hands. He recently reversed his position on Don't Ask Don't Tell. He vetoed a bill requiring women see ultrasounds before abortions, and scrubbed some pro-life language from his website. And he vetoed a Republican bill that linked teacher pay to student test scores.
5. Scandal lurks around every corner. Rubio, who may be the GOP's only chance to hold the seat, is under federal investigation for his use of party-issued credit cards, according to the Miami Herald and the St. Petersburg Times. (The Rubio camp says their candidate has not been contacted.) Crist is tied in with the same scandal indirectly because the party was run by one of his hand-picked allies. Meek meanwhile is dealing with a scandal in his own backyard. As the Miami Herald reported, "As U.S. Rep. Kendrick Meek championed a proposed biopharmaceutical complex for Liberty City in 2003, his Miami chief of staff received $13,000 from the project's developer to help the aide buy a house, newly released police records show." (All of the campaigns deny any cause for concern, at least for their own candidates.) As for Greene, did I mention that he built himself a Moroccan love den?
UPDATE: A Quinnipiac University poll released Thursday had good news for Greene and bad news for Meek. With 34 percent undecided and a majority of Democrats saying they may change their vote, Greene leads Meek 33 to 23 percent. The same poll, in June, found that Meek had 29 percent support compared with Greene's 27 percent.

Was Charlie Crist a frequent visitor of the "Morrocan love den"?

One can imagine Charlie swinging gleefully in the love den sling shouting out "yes Daddy, YES!! -

LMFAO = Look Ma, Floridians Are Outlandish?

Lie More, Feds Ask Obama?
.
RE #3: Hastings, dubiously kicked out of a federal judgeship by Rangel-like ethics problems, is a fine one to talk. Crist is the governor so if something happens on a national scale him taking a pic with BO is part of the job. Also, Floridians '08 primary vote was rendered moot so Meek's "endorsement" doesn't hold much water then or now.-

LMFAO, the band, info is here: http://www.collegian.psu.edu/archive/2009/11/30/lmfao_to_perform_party_rock_at.aspx
And yes, they are from California. But their big song is "I'm in Miami." In this context, I was using LMFAO as a shorthand for the Florida club scene.

Yes, if you are an evil liberal activist, you too can join the liberal cause to kill more American soldiers in Afghanistan.

Bradley Manning, a self-avowed "hack-ist" felt "alone and angry" in the miliatry. Now why would he do it? Seems "don't ask, don't tell" involves more than having the ability to go to gay bars while enlisted in the military.
."Manning is a slight, boyish-looking son of divorced parents from Crescent, Okla., population 1,400. His Facebook page shows him smiling, with stylish, upswept hair and a stated affinity for gay-rights groups including Repeal the Ban, which seeks to end the "don't ask, don't tell" policy on homosexuals serving in the U.S. military."
.
Do you think that is why we are re-looking at changing this military policy? How many more twisted souls are now enlisted in the military?-
4.1
But, as the liberal continue to demand the end to "don't ask, don't tell", our Universities and Colleges are doing this...
.
http://www.foxnews.com/us/2010/07/27/georgia-university-tells-student-lose-religion-lawsuit-claims/
."A graduate student in Georgia is suing her university after she was told she must undergo a remediation program due to her beliefs on homosexuality and transgendered persons.
The student, Jennifer Keeton, 24, has been pursuing a master's degree in school counseling at Augusta State University since 2009, but school officials have informed her that she'll be dismissed from the program unless she alters her "central religious beliefs on human nature and conduct," according to a civil complaint filed last week.
"[Augusta State University] faculty have promised to expel Miss Keeton from the graduate Counselor Education Program not because of poor academic showing or demonstrated deficiencies in clinical performance, but simply because she has communicated both inside and outside the classroom that she holds to Christian ethical convictions on matters of human sexuality and gender identity," the 43-page lawsuit reads.
Keeton, according to the lawsuit, was informed by school officials in late May that she would be asked to take part in a remediation plan due to faculty concerns regarding her beliefs pertaining to gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender issues.
"The faculty identifies Miss Keeton's views as indicative of her improper professional disposition to persons of such populations," the lawsuit reads.
.
Yea, don't ask don't tell needs to be repealed, but we will expel students for their views and opinions.

Actually regarding the Augusta State university case, I am proud of the university for this stance. If the views were her personal belief, which she kept out of her professional life than it would be different but your own source claims both inside and out side the classroom she voices belief that gays are immoral and practicing sinful behaviour (the traditional Christian view of gays). Given that the American Psychological Association, American Medical Association, American Counseling Association, National Association of Social workers and other who deal with medical and psychological realities of homosexual behaviour and the repercussions of homophobia all condemn the dehumanizing of homosexuals she endorses , unless she changes her belief system she should not be allowed to become a school counselor or get her degree. Just like you would not want a med student who believed that the humours control disease to be given a medical license, this woman is clearly incapable of doing her job because she is allowing a personal belief to cloud her professional judgement and is ignoring the findings support by her peers. I am a graduate student, and if I meet say a chemist who did not believe in atomic theory, and English student who though Shakespeare was actual faked by the Russians in 1932 or a geologist who thought the world was 4000 years old, I too would report them and hope they would be expelled because obviously they are incapable of distinguishing fact from fiction.
I thought you conservatives stated that moral relativism was untrue (i.e. there are right and wrong answers). Well here is a case where you should applaud the university for not shying away just because someone tries to hide behind the moral relativistic position of "belief" when stating opinions not only outside the mainstream for their field, but demonstrated to be false and actually condemned by their peers as damaging to peoples (especially in her case children's since she wants to be a school counselor) mental health.

rahonavis2:
.
mr rahonavis, I can respect your OPINION. I am actually quite familiar with the DSM IV, diagnostic criteria for mental health used by Psychiatrist and Counselors. I am also very well aware of all the studies which have been completed in the past which are indeed in theory as to what makes someone "gay or straight".
.
Unfortunately those are still simply theories. There are to date no genetic links, no defining physical evidence which proves or disproves your opinion or the opinions of the student who is now being subjected to a lawsuit for her beliefs.
.
I would hope as a counselor, the student in question would excuse herself from any case which gender identity or sexual orientation was the primary and main concern for any therapy or counseling. If she cannot, then I would agree she should not seek out a counseling profession, but rather go into one of the other social worker programs which would allow her to hold these individual beliefs and have it not interfere with her job duties. It is actually very easy to do these days. If she can recues herself, there are a myriad of other mental health disorders and counseling areas that can be utilized and never touch on sexual orientation, sexual preferences or gender identity. Today, we find a lack of these professions, both counseling and Psychiatry. There was a recent article I read where Psychiatrist are in demand as never before, and those physicians going into specialties are not choosing Psychiatry.
.
But, to have a University determine someone's beliefs to be contrary, and that an individual cannot seek out a degree from them based on the Universities beliefs of how one should or should not practice counseling in this specific area is unacceptable. That is the definition of tyranny. That is the definition of bias and a shallow one-sided opinion. That is the irony of the liberal left's beliefs they attempt to make in all things, politically correct. -
4.8
"There are to date no genetic links"
.
That's not exactly true.
.
http://allpsych.com/journal/homosexuality.html
.
Here's a key sentence: "While all of this scientific experimentation and conclusion seems evidentiary, sociobehaviorists are not convinced."
.
There ARE genetic links. The argument is mostly around whether acting on the desire is predetermined and the role of nurturing in influencing that decision. -
4.9
As usual momentoad you are full of crap. But what else is surprising with what you write and cite.
.
There are NO, read it again people, NO genetic tests which prove or disprove homosexuality. The debate continues in theory only.
.
Until it is discovered that a particular allele or "gay gene" exists the rest of the studies are simply someone's wild guess as to what does or does not cause homosexuality. Period. The one physicial science study you cite whereby the hypothalmus is enlarged, thus proving a link is nothing more than me saying anyone with a larger index finger are predominantly heterosexual is purely conjecture on my part and that of the scientist who lays claim to the hypothalmus study.
.
Even the article you cite concludes with the following;
"Perhaps there is no one answer, that sexual orientation, whether homosexual or heterosexual; gay, straight, lesbian, or bisexual, all are a cause of a complex interaction between environmental, cognitive, and anatomical factors, shaping the individual at an early age."
.
Try again mr momentoad. You fail yet again. -

"There are NO, read it again people, NO genetic tests which prove or disprove homosexuality."

Sadly, none either for deep-seated homophobia, racism or right-wing authoritarian following. Talk about being "immoral and practicing sinful behaviour".

Thanks for the link sheperdWRONG yet again. I will be happy to use the author as a source from now on as to why this country has been driven into the ditch by progressives. -

Rusty:
Again you hijack a thread that had nothing to do with identity politics to bring in exactly that.
Again I have to ask you: Do you care if your side wins? Or do you just come here to vent your deep resentments of everyone who isn't a straight white Anglo?
I'll say it again. The only people who would agree with this approach are already on your side. What you're doing is scaring a lot of people who might otherwise join you in cultural conservatism into voting Democratic.
Exhibit A: The Texas governor's race. Where Perry was up about 7 points a few weeks back, the last polls I saw had White even with Perry. And the change was entirely due to Latinos defecting to the Democratic Party.
Even Rick Perry, whom I consider a deeply stupid man, knows better than to endorse Arizona-style harassment of immigrants. But not the Texas GOP, which wrote exactly that into the platform, apparently frightening Latinos into White's camp.
Is expressing your fear of losing white male heterosexual privilege so important to you and your allies that it's worth losing the top spot in Texas?
Consider that Texas is about 35% Latino, 10% black, and the percentage of LGBT people is unknown but 5% is probably a good guess. That's half the state right there, and we haven't mentioned Asians, the high proportion of "white" people with Native ancestry, and white heterosexuals with family members who are Latino or gay or one of the other categories you're so thoroughly offending (whether you think they deserve to be offended or not). I can tell you that, as a het white Anglo male whose family has been in the USA since the 1740s, I'm offended, too.
You probably post here more than anyone else, yet I can't guess what you're actually *for*. In fact, I don't really get what you're *against,* only *who* you're against.
You want to cut taxes on the wealthy, but you also want to balance the budget. That appears to be the whole of your platform. Oh, you intend to get there by stripping people of their Social Security and federal health care, but, let's face it: that's never going to happen. So we're left with tax cuts for the wealthy and (since you can't come up with anything else to cut) nobody believes your faction will decrease the deficit.
We could really use a forthright GOP plan for putting people back to work while balancing the budget, rebuilding failing infrastructure, and reversing the national educational decline. But there is no such plan. There's just identity posturing, ridiculous nostrums such as removing direct election of senators (here's a clue: any proposal that requires a constitutional amendment isn't likely to make it), and letting BP off the hook.
The GOP seems to be on the cusp of throwing away a congressional election that it could have capitalized on. Because people won't turn out for a campaign that offers nothing positive. As much as you think you're energizing your base, you're giving the other side a reason to show up at the polls, not because they love the Democrats, but because your faction scares the heck out of them.
I challenge you to propose some actual policy ideas. Detailed ones, not just "cut waste" or "shrink government." Your constant resort to identity politics is not only getting very old, it's a political loser. Come up with some actual proposals to improve the condition of the United States, and you might turn that around. Keep up what you're doing and you don't stand a chance.

I can only guess Rusty is upset that 'straight' students are being drummed out of college for affirming their beliefs but gay soldiers are getting their way....

Oh please...I really don't know what point he's trying to make.-

Sorry foghorn, but there is no logic or sanity on the left anymore. Nothing you people profess makes a lick of sense.
.
In progressives eyes, and their distortion of all things, you are damned if you are straight basically. All things lead to some gay nirvana. But it is really just protecting yet again another of the DemocRATS base of support.
.
The sad part is for gays and lesbians. Behind their backs most liberals make fun of them. They are just another pawn in the liberal agenda. "We'll support you, if you also go with the rest of our crap we believe"

Rubio's plan to stop stimulus money would double the unemployment rate. His tax cuts for the rich, and cutting social security would also stall the economy! To create more jobs, our economy needs more economic demand. We need people who are willing to go out and buy products and services. Our economic problem is not that we lack enough people who will go out and work to create the products and services we need to have better lives. Our problem is that there is not enough demand to entice businesses to increase their work forces or buy new plants and equipment. Thanks to republicans, crying any money spent will add to the deficit, any type of government spending is bankrupting our country, wasteful and will add to deficit, the current economic crisis will carry on! Except the two Bush wars that are unwinnable and are taking our wealth and lives they are ok with republicans! We are screwed……
