I would say based on the items you highlight above that it already is a global issue and has been for some time. I won't hold my breath on China changing course in the new year though. I'm not sure how long it will take for the Middle Kingdom to become more of a 'global player' and I'm not sure it will be a good thing for us when it finally does.

There are those who say the Chinese have ultimate leverage over us, given the amount of U.S. debt they hold--but I'd say the opposite: if there ever was an enterprise too big to fail, it is the United States.

Once again, the moral high ground would come in handy here but the home of Goldman Sachs, Exxon and Haliburton can hardly claim it. And again, there's no morality to be had in mercantilism, it's just business. The morality comes with what a given society does with it and (again) the home of the Escalade and the McMansion doesn't have much claim on anyone else's behavior. Perhaps the Europeans can apply some credible pressure.

Well you could say we have a mercantilist relationship with the chinese: The US/EU have been using them as our shared manufacturing base for decades, hence the massive erosion of those industries at home. On that note, the degree of interdependence between the US/EU and Chinese economies ensures they'll never use what would otherwise be massive leverage against us: they need us to buy the things they produce because they won't allow enough of their population to become affluent enough for significant domestic markets to form. It's classic economic MAD.
