Does Bill Clinton Have a Woman Problem?
Not that kind of woman problem. But potentially a more troubling one. Power journalism couple Susan Glasser and Peter Baker sat down with Clinton recently for a Foreign Policy interview and asked him this question: "Who is the smartest, most penetrating thinker you know?"
Off the top of his head, Clinton named a handful: Paul Krugman. David Brooks. Tom Friedman. Malcolm Gladwell. Robert Wright. Matt Ridley. All interesting writers and thinkers, all smart guys. And all guys.
I feel fairly confident that the former president does read female writers and could rattle off some additional names if specifically asked. But as a woman, it's always unsettling to see something like this, particularly since there are no satisfying answers to the questions of where all the female writers are and why they're mostly not in a position to be as widely-read as their male peers. Some of my favorite writers and thinkers are women, but I definitely have to go out of my way to read them because for the most part they are not featured in national newspapers or *ahem* news magazines or even referenced by male writers or columnists.
Foreign Policy's list of the Top 100 Global Thinkers, by the way, includes just 17 women recognized on their own (Clinton and his wife share a ranking). That's the same number of women who serve in the U.S. Senate, and only one woman ranks among the top 25 thinkers.

The "dudes problem" is significantly less of an issue than the fact that Brooks, Friedman, and to a lesser extent Gladwell, while all occasionally entertaining, are super into sloppy thinking and being wrong about everything. He may as well have put Maureen Dowd on that list. (It's also interesting to see Brooks on that list. Can you imagine George Bush, or any Republican, praising some center-left writer such as Friedman?)
-
Which female writers are you thinking of, Amy? Be interested to hear who you're reading. -
2
Sorry but I'm more worried about the names on the list than the names off it. Gladwell? Friedman? Brooks? Lightweights all.
-
3
Thanks, Amy. He didn't name you? Who are some of your fave writers, regardless of gender? If you have to go out of your way to read women writers, why not drop names here and give them some promotion?

So you're saying this a societal problem right, and not just a Bill Clinton problem? Or maybe not a Clinton problem at all since it's not his fault that he doesn't even have access to great female minds in traditional media? Are you saying his "woman problem" is that he doesn't have access to enough women....?
.
wait, don't answer that. -

You know over the years Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh, Dick Armey, Ann Coulter have made sexist comments about all you women that don't think the same way that they do. Your colleague Mark Halperin thought it would be funny to put a picture of Mary Landreau up with semen in her hair and Glenn then followed that up with calling Mary a whore.
.
Newsweek choose to run a picture of Sarah Palin on their cover in running shorts. Glenn then followed up with.
.
'Beck-Palin, I'll consider. But Palin-Beck — can you imagine, can you imagine what an administration with the two of us would be like? What? Come on! She'd be yapping or something, and I'd say, “I'm sorry, why am I hearing your voice? I'm not in the kitchen.”
.
None of this bothered you. But Bill does name a women and you are bothered.

It's long been politically correct to slag off the Clintons; criticize Beck or Palin and you're the target of a jihad (though it might be pc in the Village to criticize them both at this point). Who can be surprised?

"David Brooks. Tom Friedman. Malcolm Gladwell"
Well the jokes practically write themselves.

Krugman, Brooks, Freidman??? Seriously??? No reason then that Joy Behar, Ariana Huffington did not make the woman's list as deep thinkers.
And if you look at the Foreign Policy list it has Obama in second place for doing oh right NOTHING.
You got to love lists
-

The truth is very simple. Hillary told Bill "If I even hear you MENTION another woman's name...".
-
9
And he has a black problem.
And an Asian problem. How many on that list are those
- who have anything nice to say about the declared enemies of the west/whites;
- who accuse us of committing crimes against humanity in Iraq/Afghanistan/Vietnam/Chile/Africa; or
- who say anything unflattering about Israel? Then it depends on what you mean by "thinker". I wouldn't have listed most of those topping that list.
And it depends on who you ask. The gurus steeped in Chinese or Russian exceptionalism will come up with a very different list.
Yet, talk about neural pathways: Would those guys at Foreign Policy recognize "smartest, most penetrating thinker" if they were staring at one?
-

Query: Would Clinton mention Brooks if he didn't write about Red Lobster and Applebees?

I just came here from MS Desiree Rogers post above, and now wonder if this is comedy day.
.
Amy, are you being the straight man here? Get it? Straight. Man. Does Bill have a problem with women? Not that kind? But, yes, he does seem to have a problem. That kind, and every kind. When he next sees Hillary again, he might get an update on his problem. In the form of frosty silence.
.
Read 2 posts and got 2 great laughs. Thanks. -

Bill does not have a woman problem; he has a problem differentiating between hacks and the real tihing. Hacks and hackettes are a dime a dozen. How about some Asians, Africans, Europeans, Arabs.
-

It's really nice that you can read through these lists and tell the boy names from the girl names.
Good for you, Amy. Good for you.

I think people would struggle to add behar, huffington, noonan as great/smart thinker.
.
it is a national problem, not a bill clinton problem. And you're doing women a disservice with the crass jokes. i can't wait til the day when all the strong/smartypants ladies in the obama economic admin get their weekly columns, although im not holding my breath. -

Were I a woman I would be more offended that the biggest female name in "journalism" is probably Maureen Dowd.
-

All interesting writers and thinkers, all smart guys."
If I were Krugman, I'd sue for defamation for being included in the same sentence as Brooks and Friedman. A Nobel Prize winning economist who's been proved correct on just about everything he's written and and two over-paid, under-credentialed hacks who, certainly, haven't. Clinton, unfortunately, has always had this "centrist" problem.

It sounds like Bill just rattled off the authors of the last few nonfiction books he read.
