State Dinner, Uh, Fashion
Desiree, who did this to you? Tell us. We will hunt that person down and hurt him or her.
UPDATE: Brooks Kraft offers us this photo gallery of what otherwise appears to have been a lovely evening.
UPDATE2: We believe we have identified the perpetrator.

Today is very, very, very sad day. I (sigh) agree with everything rusty said.
-
-
2
She obviously still believes that her ex-boyfriend who designed this gown for her, understands why she broke up with him. HAHAHAHA
LM

Nothing says hot like a shear dress over an apron.
-
4
Ouch. Hideous!
.
Spob? Spob!
.
Where is spob? Where are the fashion police when you really need them? -
5
KT, I'll go ahead and wish you a HAPPY THANKSGIVING! Yes, fashionistas are NOT happy campers over this pic. Was this made from a dinner table cloth? Remember the "Gone with the Wind" curtain dress - and Carol Burnett's side-splitting parody of that scene?
.
Let's show 'em something much better. Do YOU have a pic of you at your Clinton state dinner, KT? -
6
Whoever did this should be shot, stabbed, beaten, then hacked to bits. Then, the little bits should be stomped on until they are even littler bits. After that, the really little bits should be shot, stabbed and beaten again. Then, the really, really tiny bits left should be fed to sea lions to be excreted into the sea, to serve as food for the plankton!
-
-
6.2
...and then the plankton....

.
So long, and thanks for the turkey...
-
-
7
Oh dear.
Definitely a case of "When bad dresses happen to good people"....
-
8
OT, but KT, it appears that the high sheriffs have corrected the problems with safari. Thank them, thank them, thank them.
-
9
Desire'e Rogers is actually the most fashion-conscious person in D.C. Can't defend that dress though
-
10
Your aristocracy at work:
"Dah-lings, could you just be-lieve what she was wear-ing to the Hunt Ball last night!"
.
"Yes, yes, it was just aw-ful! But dah-ling, it wasn't the State Dinner we attended?"
.
"Oh dear, I've for-got-ten again! Simply dread-ful, wasn't it?" -
11
This is a much better outfit than Desiree's, although I'll still bet KT topped everyone at her state dinner, let alone last night's….
-
12
I never did get comme des Garcons - that dress is HIDEOUS.
on the other hand, I loved that so many of the ladies wore saris or gowns with an indian influence. And wasn't it nice to see so many brown faces in the crowd? Also, the room, gorgeous!
-
13
Was it cold last night? Did she wear her quilt to keep warm?
-
14
Did what?
[You may be old - if you see a dress ...] -
15
A bad dress is a fashion faux pas--Michelle Obama's garish cocktail dress at a posthumous MOH ceremony is a little more than that. Funny how the faux pas gets the ink.
.
This post is in poor taste, in my opinion. Desiree is being held up to ridicule because of what, a difference in taste.-
15.1
...spob, since you're TIME's fashion critic, could you compare Michelle's cocktail dress to this quilt wrap in more detail, please?
-
15.2
Oh Sweet Lord Did Spob just say "Desiree is being held up to ridicule because of what, a difference in taste" Well Jimmity Crickets what do you call your obsession with Michelle's dress? Er, A difference in taste
Yet again Spob....SWING AND A MISS
And you never replied back to this picture http://www.flickr.com/photos/whitehouse/3993796943/
I don't think the Montis were as concerned about her dress as you
-
15.3
Are you guys really this stupid? There's a difference between what Desiree did, which is completely inoffensive and wearing something inappropriate for an occasion--like for example, showing up to a funeral in a revealing red dress.
.
tstar3, what were they gonna do, be rude themselves? And the point is not whether they did take offense, but whether offense could have been taken. -
-
15.5
Swing and a miss spob. Anybody can take offense to anything. I take offense to the communistic red splashing all over this page. I take offense that the letter r comes before z. I take offense at taking offense.
Can KT not take offense at the hideous nature of Ms. Rogers' dress?
-
15.6
We've missed you, spob. Your weekly "Friday Outrage" seemed to have skipped Obama's bow to the Japanese Emperor. That was a BIG one at Fox News.
.
Unfortunately, their own polling showed that 67% didn't mind Obama's bow and that included 55% of Republicans.
.
But the really funny part is that Fox News never discussed the results of their own poll on air.
.
Sometimes, the real comedy comes in what's NOT said... -
15.7
I think we all know that spob just wants to be the prettiest girl at the prom.
-
15.8
Somehow we are afraid to ask the fashion commissar Spob what he wears.
For all we know, Spob may be in the fastness of the Amazon forests wearing nothing but American leather - and looking remotely civilized to the local damsels ... -
15.9
Oh, spob, we are not really that stupid. We just don't think it was all that big a deal.
.
I will say this:
.
If this is pretty much all you have to froth at the mouth over, then you really need either an anti rabies vaccination or a personal brain care specialist.
.
Chooze yer weapon...

This is just baffling. So bad it looks like it's photoshopped. Makes one a little nervous that she's the social secretary.
-
17
Reason #37 I'm glad not to be a woman. Black tux, blue suite, done.
-
17.1
Don't forget your tie shepherd. A good suite can go very wrong when paired with a tacky tie.
-
-
-
18
The more I look at this, the more I realize it isn't a dress at all. It's a curtain over an apron over a hockey uniform.
-
18.1
…at least she removed the curtain rod (Carol Burnett didn't). But it looked great in the window and she couldn't resist. Venetian blinds would be tougher to wear.
-
18.2
Looking closer at the bottom of the dress, there seems to be a pocket or something. Is that really a pocket or just an extra swatch of cloth?
-
18.3
"Is that really a pocket or just an extra swatch of cloth?"
.
No, but I do think you are close, it is a removable little "sachet" to hold all the party favors after the "affair".
.
Let's see, "how many Obama dollars can I squirrel away from the Obama stash"? Hmmmmmm

Why is there a behind-the-scenes photograph from The Mummy Returns posted? Did Mrs. Rogers audition or something?

See update above. We have identified the perp:

Beauty (in art, fashion, music,.. people, garb) lies in the eyes of the beholder.
And some go for mascara, corsets and stilletto.
And some love the burqa ....
Imagine that some go cuckoo over any trashy doodle signed "Picasso"! -
20.3
…beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but when many eyes beheld say something is butt ugly, something's wrong.
.
IMHO, of course, I'd ask what does Desiree want her dress to do to make her look her best – highlight curves, slim the figure, look taller, show skin, blend in, stand out, etc.? It's like a man wanting his tux to make him elegant, intimidating, muscular, or slim. This dress doesn't appear to do anything. Kawakubo aims for “anti-fashion” but her pieces still should benefit the wearer somehow, yes? -
20.4
Imagine that some go cuckoo over any trashy doodle signed "Picasso"!"
.
Or a book "by" Sarah Palin. I mean, really. At least Picasso could doodle. -
20.5
deconstructiva …beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but when many eyes beheld say something is butt ugly, something's wrong. ..
Maybe the 'something' or the 'beholders' are in the 'wrong' era or 'wrong' socio-cultural environment ..
Even then, not all hate "butt ugly".[Behold, some people likes Sarah Palin.]
" .. I'd ask what does Desiree want her dress to do to make her look her best – highlight curves, slim the figure, look taller, show skin, blend in, stand out, etc.? "
In a different socio-cultural environment, all those attributes that you consider 'desirables' may be downright tacky and scandalous - and even get the subject condemned by Spob, the local fashion commissar to death by stoning in the local public square.
" .. Kawakubo aims for “anti-fashion” but her pieces still should benefit the wearer somehow, yes? .."
Perhaps. But isn't it more important for the wearer to personally like and feel comfortable in what she is wearing - peer pressure notwithstanding?
Shouldn't we accommodate those who love the hijab/burqa or the stillettos wear them?
After all, the primary purpose of clothing is to protect us from the elements - and other considerations are secondary. And if the elements are conducive then, hey, we go butt naked ..[And if that vision scares you because you are out of shape - then you may be in a wrong place called America.]
-
20.6
OK, I'm way late to this party, but I gotta say, Kawakubo did a much better job designing costumes for The Incredibles.
-
-
21
it looks like she sprayed herself with adhesive and rolled around in the linen closet to see what stuck
-
21.1
…maybe spraying herself with glue then rolling around in glitter and sequins could've worked better. Some form-fitting outfits for women and men look sprayed or painted on. Why not go for it literally?
-
-
-
22
It could be worse - Lindsay Lohan could've designed that.
Is she still working at Ungaro? -
23
I am beginning to understand why the Pres has to bow "low". The Emperor of Japan is short: no ifs, ands or buts : very short. The Indian PM is not even of medium height. The First Lady towers above the First Lady of India. She too is reaching down, as she did when speaking to Queen Elizabeth.

I can never understand when it is okay or not okay to mock the way people look.
.
Sometimes you can get scolded even if you didn't actually mock.http://swampland.blogs.time.com/2009/02/02/dont-go-there-mr-president/

I own cycling bib shorts that look better than that. But that's what it reminded me of...
