Casey, and the Next Chapter of His Family's Pro-Life Legacy
Pennsylvania Senator Bob Casey will tell you that he doesn't get many more calls from fundraisers or constituents about abortion than he does the public plan, death panels or immigration. "We're getting a lot of inquiries from lots of different groups on several differnet topics," he demurrs. "I don't think it's any different or intense on this than on other issues: Medicare advantage, the public option."
But for pro-life groups, he's their great hope in the Senate. A look a why. And while Casey may be moderating his tone, “not drawing any lines in the sand” on abortion, others are. Michigan Senator Debbie Stabenow said on Fox News Sunday that she would vote against any health care bill that includes Stupak-like language.

There is zero evidence that Stupak consistently adheres to the principle that taxpayers have a right to not have their tax dollars pay for legal, but morally objectionable, acts (e.g. military force, the death penalty, accountability-free financial bailouts, etc.)
Nor does Stupak or anyone else in Congress consistently adhere to the principle that federal funds are ultra-fungible. Certainly not when it comes to faith-based initiatives.
No matter how genuinely people may oppose abortion, it is abundantly clear that the Stupak's radical position is merely a pretext for opposition to health care reform on the merits. Since Casey doesn't want to kill the legislation he has little reason to demagogue the issue.

This is certainly sad news for Health Care Reform. Allow me to list the various problems in this bill.
.
1. I would agree with Jay Newton-Small that the current language which DOES provide for Government assisted abortion payments will be a huge hurdle to jump, if not the defining death nail for this bill's NON-passage. If my progressive/liberal friends continue to resist, health care insurance reform as we know it with this bill is DOA.
.
2. Sadly another major part of this bill which over 56% of American's oppose, is the potential of Government take over of their health care insurance. Over 85% of Americans currently have insurance that they are completly satisfied with, and believe that if this bill or any version like it are passed, then they do not want this legislation to pass.
."With almost two thirds of the nation opposed to the Democratic plan, the president risks much with its passage. Angry Americans are more likely to vote than satisfied ones. And health care reform has made a lot of voters extremely unhappy."
.
http://www.americanthinker.com/blog/2009/11/polls_so_goes_health_care_refo.html
.
Multiple polling organizations are reporting that over 2/3 of Americans oppose any changes at this time that the Democrats have proposed. The only changes that the vast majority of Americans want to see at this time is legislation which address; Portability of their current insurance. Ending the practice of pre-existing conditions. Offering legislation that opens up a free market competition for State to State allowing insurance companies to compete. And, Tort Reform. By simply doing Tort Reform and State to State competition, it has been estimated to save over 1.2 TRILLION dollars in health care insurance costs. This alone will give those who do not currently have insurance the chance to buy it, if they choose. Keyword, choice.
.
3. Americans are upset and rightfully mad at the Democrats in Congress for making "deals", BRIBING Senators like Landreiu to cast their vote for political payoffs. Do the Democrts in Congress believe that the American Tax Payer is that stupid not to see what is going on here?
.
Even Landreiu herself has said it will not stop at just 100 MILLION in political bribes. It in her own words "is more like 300 MILLION DOLLARS" in pork subsidies to her State.
.
4. But, the most concerning issue is the potential risk this bill has with our health care insurance. The very real risk that we will loose our current health care insurance for a far more inferior insurance plan with a huge mountain of Government regulations. Regulations that will restrict needed and life-saving tests that the Government will set up bogus "medical review boards", setting up payment guidelines, procedure and test "do's and don'ts" taking the decision out of the hands of Doctors and putting the decision into the hands of a government bureaucrat. Rationing by government regulations and "standards of practice" anyone??
.
But Jay. I believe abortion payment is a major issue. However I strongly feel that the complete rejection by Seniors in this country will be the final nail in the coffin of this health care reform. Seniors will never allow the proposed 500 BILLION in cuts to medicare. It simply will never happen.-

And, in addition, there is a major campaign going on right now with regards to Senator Casey. I even have myself written many letters to the Editors of various local newspaper here in Pennsylvania calling for people to "make their voices known to our two Senators". To "say we will not stand for any health care legislation which allows for abortions to be paid for with tax payer / government funds".
.
I received an email reponse from Sen Casey himself that he is "looking very closely at this very important part of the legislation, and agrees that abortion funding should not include tax payer dollars". I am hopeful that he holds true to his word. -

Rusty, when you say...Over 85% of Americans currently have insurance that they are completely satisfied with... .
.
Who are these 85% of people who are completely satisfied? I am completely satisfied with my current insurance except for the fact that if the premiums I pay keep going up at the same rate every year, I won't be able to afford insurance much longer. I don't know of anyone who is satisfied with the current system where premiums go up 25-40% a year. -

Maybe, if you ask the questions just right.
In reality, though, "You cannot fool all the people all the time." I'm pretty sure it was a Republican who said that, although I doubt he'd recognize the current evil, hateful mutation of his party.

Perhaps these links will better help you out, CPinFL. This first one address "cost" as you have identified and it is still over 50% satisfation. The 85% figure is for health care insurance overall.
.
http://www.gallup.com/poll/102934/majority-americans-satisfied-their-own-healthcare.aspx
."Ninety-three percent of insured Americans who had recently suffered a serious illness were satisfied with their health care. So were 95 percent of those who suffered from chronic illness."
.
http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2009/06/24/obama-pushes-national-health-care-americans-happy-coverage/
.
This from even Politifact
.""Make pre-existing conditions a thing of the past. Build on the system that works well for about 85 percent of Americans. Every survey shows strong satisfaction with private coverage. We need to build on that system rather than put it at risk with a government-run plan."
.
http://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2009/sep/01/americas-health-insurance-plans/strong-satisfaction-health-insurance-coverage/
.
I agree that costs are out of control. But, this bill from the Democrats does not address cost at all. They simply want to put in another insurance program and hope to hell it brings down the cost of insurance. When in fact the real "cost" is in the actual procedures, waste, fraud, and abuse. Add State to State competition, Tort Reform and other non-Tax funded changes, I strongly believe you will see a decrease in your health insurance costs.
.
Thanks for your question tho, CPinFL. -

Oh Rusty! "Ninety three percent of insured Americans who had recently suffered a serious illness were satisfied with their healthcare."
Of course the ones who weren't satisfied could not take part in the poll because they were.... dead!

Forget about tort reform. Dems will never go for it. The idea just makes too much sense and saves too many dollars. They'd rather preserve a system that polverizes billions of health care dollars, tortures physicians and misses most cases of true medical negligence. Obamacare is a great victory for defensive medicine. Why should the public care? See http://www.MDWhistleblower.blogspot.com under Legal Quality.
