Mark Sanford: Fiscal Conservative and Frequent Flyer

The South Carolina Ethics Commission has released the details of 37 ethics charges against embattled Governor Mark Sanford. Interestingly, while nearly all of the allegations involve travel (airline upgrades at state expense, reimbursing himself with campaign funds for personal expenses), none of those trips seem to have been to Argentina.

It wasn't so long ago, by the way, that Sanford was lauded as America's Most Conservative Governor by the American Conservative Union. ACU was particularly struck by his vigilance in making sure that state taxpayer dollars weren't misspent:

Like President Reagan, he made control of spending, the bureaucracy, and waste his top goals from the first. He spent half of what his predecessor did on his official transition to office, disbanded his security detail and scrapped the traditional black tie fancy ball for a Bar-B-Q picnic open to all. But his actions once in office were hardly just symbolic. He adopted the first detailed executive branch budget in the state's history, which identified millions of dollars in possible savings, rather than leaving decisions solely to the legislature as had all earlier governors.

Turns out he spent the money on legroom. It gets really cramped back there in coach.

Too bad Sanford couldn't live up to his own rhetoric.

  • 2

Thanks, KT. Did Sanford redeem freq. flyer miles for his Argentinean trips? And really sorry to ask, but the blinding obvious q. about paying for legroom is: why didn't he just save the money and use the airplane toilet for his “encounters”?
    .
…and I just read your new HCR piece about R attack strategy aka stonewalling. It's an easy strategy: delay (or DeLay?), deny, strike fear, offer no “plan B” (pun quite intended), then hope the base falls for it again. Pardon my cynicism for that. That aside, thanks for this, KT. Will you post here later w/ more info.?

I can't wait for this loon to recede into the illustrious history of South Carolina, which includes such luminaries as John C. Calhoun and Joe "You Lie!" Wilson.

  • 4

Oh goody, more tabloid journalism from the new Queen of Tabloid Jounalism.
    .
Did you work for the Enquirer before TIME, KT?

    • 4.2

KT, please forgive rusty. He and I just had a teeny tiny spat back at Joe's “Yes It Is” post (#6.2 on), so my apologies if he's taking it out on you. Rusty has kept the same biz plan for his company since 1976 and the world has changed since then. I think the future shock is a little overwhelming right now.

You are so correct, Karen. I apologize. It is fully the right of the South Carolina legislation to forbid anyone in a Government position from flying anything but coach. Especially when you are a Governor and all, that makes total sense to me. Sanford should be impeached for this offense.
      .
Now if we could only get Nancy Pelosi to forego her 747 jet bought and paid for with tax payer dollars, and fly coach as well, then all problems in the world with deficits would be solved.
      .
When do you think you will write an article and blog about the expense of Nancy's big plane? I'm just curious as a tax payer and all providing for her massive expenditure to fly back and forth across the country in her Air Force provided plane. Do you think it costs more than a Business Class upgrade?

Actually that's a tactic the right learned form the left. See any attack on rusty or myself. The left is big on calling everybody a liar right now and yet they continue to lie to themselves.

If Sanford is found by the folks of South Carolina find him to be in violation of his duties, he should suffer the consequences and rightly so.

I would be delighted if the smug KT would be so diligent to file stories on the tax cheats still in the Administration or on Rangel who is responsible for tax law. Or would that be racist or just too much of th etruth for KT to handle?

"Oh, and another difference between what Pelosi does and what Sanford is alleged to have done: It's legal"

These are charges, until he has been convicted of nothing. So until then it is legal as Pelosi.

To quote John Tower, what office do I go to to regain my reputation.

The use of the word alleged does not alleviate your tone that you have assumed guilt to Sanford

    • 4.11

      @freeinpa

LoL. You are rusty are getting owned. Face meet palm.

      KT:

You should try comedy. Yes I read "your reporting on Rangel" All 3 line with a link to the WaPo article. No snide comments as you have posted here about Sanford and conservatives.

You will have to excuse my laughter at your "reporting"

    • 4.16

      KT:

I stand corrected on the Quote. It is hard to keep track of all the conservatives that have had their reputations trashed over the last 30 years by liberals.

    • 4.17

      KT

Yes you keep linking to links from other sources with little to no comment from you as you have chosen to do with Sanford.

Your "articles" on Rangel are the equivalent to voting present by Obama. You can't be held accountable.

Oh I agree with you Karen, that what Sanford has done is indeed illegal and he should suffer the consequences of it.
      .
I was just pointing out the difference between Pelosi's escapades at tax payer expense versus an upgrade from coach to business class by Sanford. Taking out the "is it legal or not" argument, and just looking at overall tax payer cost to fund the two modes of transportation.
      .
I was trying to identify the cost difference to tax payers whether they be in South Carolina or in Pelosi's case, Federal Tax Payers.
      .
In Sanford's case, maybe what a $300 buck upgrade versus, oh you didn't report on the cost of Nancy's use of an Air Force Jet did you in your blog post you cited. Or did I miss that major fact?
      .
Nope, I re-read it, nada, zilch, nothing but a comparison to Hastert's use of an Air Force Jet, which you incorrectly said he used more times than Nancy has to date. Actually Nancy to set the record straight on your referenced blog post has out flown Hastert almost 2-1. Whereas I believe you had it the other way around.
      .
I actually took the time to count. Nancy WINS!!!
      .
But, who is counting dollars these days, right?
      .
And of course we know that TIME and Karen (I used to be an Enquirer Reporter wannabe) Tumulty feel pressure from the far left liberal commenters to always shoot down a Republican, and rarely report on the same antics of a Democrat.
      .
If what Nancy is doing in this economy is legal on air transportation is one thing. How she is spending our tax payer dollars on un-necessary Air Force planes is indeed quite another topic all together.
      .
Just attempting to keep things in perspective is all, Karen. I am sure you understand. Given that there are absolutely NO conservative voices from TIME to be found at all on here. Except for the few of us that comment regularly.

I'm not sure if you would dispute this or not (and I understand it isn't your point), but you do understand that there are absolutely NO liberal voices from TIME to be found at all on her, either, right?
      .
You are aware that these are not liberals doing the blog-posting, and this is not the liberal perspective that you're reading here, Rustydog?

    • 4.26

“…there are absolutely NO liberal voices from TIME to be found at all on her…”
      .
stuart, which of the swampwomen are you speaking of? Seriously, I know that was an honest mistake but that's funny. Please don't be offended. Then again, I have a dark sense of humor behind my usually sunny posts. I try to spellcheck my stuff but sometimes I'll *deliberately* type stuff like that.
      .
a serious question: how do you type italics here?

    • 4.27

That was pretty funny. Considering all the typos I make, I couldn't point it out myself.

    • 4.28

Toche', stuart. However you must agree at least that ALL of the current brood of TIME "journalist" (cough) are much more left leaning in their bias than right.
      .
In a left versus right purely frame. Throwing out your "centrist" label which you convince me more and more exists.

    • 4.29

I think those of us on the true left look at them as center right and those on the true right see them as left center. My own opinion is that right has moved so far to the right that the center looks left now.

    • 4.30

      "the center looks left now"

If you consider Rosie O'Donnell or Jerry Brown the center

    • 4.31

Both Rosie O'Kennel and Jerry are far left even to those of us on the true left. TIME is as centrist as they come.

    • 4.32

You are aware that these are not liberals doing the blog-posting, and this is not the liberal perspective that you're reading here, Rustydog?
      .
I can't help but be curious about this naivete, SZ.
      .
Do you remember a month ago, when Scozzafava got drummed out of the primary, and Rusty started calling her a progressive and claiming that there were too many progressives in the GOP?
      .
The obvious take-away from that should be that, to Rusty, anyone to the left of Ayn Rand is a tree-hugging dope-smoking big government commie.
      .
So yes, to him, every single author here on Swampland is a liberal.
      .
I know you've been trying mightily to reach out to Rusty, so I'm curious if you actually don't recognize this aspect of his world view.

    • 4.33

      @deconstructiva

You're going to want to use some basic HTML tags.

      Bold = text
      Italics = text

Make sure there aren't any spaces between the angle braces, though. You can find more info at this HTML Tutorial.

Hey, sorry to leave this as a comment but what's up with this blog? I really like reading it, but it always takes forever to load and the javascript is always moving me around the page involuntarily. Sometimes it locks down the scrollbar completely and I just have to refresh to continue reading the article.

I thought it was just growing pains, but it's been going on for months. I use Chrome and Firefox, both have problems with this site but Chrome is worse. On my Android smartphone this site is completely unusable.

The regular Time.com site works fine, although it could load a little faster, btw.

Ditto here – Safari 4.0.4, Mac OS 10.6.2 (both current versions) in case the High Sheriffs' SGU (Special Geek Unit) is interested.

    • 5.3

Just want to add my vote for some help with safari. It's like a being in a squirrel cage on the Swamp site (and I mean the way it loads, not the comments). I could go to a PC but much prefer the MacBook. Please help.

Yes nut on those flights he could not use the cigars he got as a gift from Bill

    • 6.2

…sacred, I'm guessing that Mark and Maria preferred two-seat per row puddle jumpers. The turbulence would make for exciting rides, so to speak. On regular jets, I'm guessing they chose window – middle seats. Whither the poor schmuck in the aisle seat? Or did they always buy that seat to keep it empty? I'm also presuming they brought their own blanket; the ones provided by the airlines are way too small. Are some airlines now charging for blankets?

    • 6.3

I haven't flown since 9/11. I have heard they charge for blankets and pillows. I'm not sure about it though.

Rusty's argument that politicians are answerable to the taxpayer not the law, is interesting.

BTW who is paying for Afghanistan and Iraq? (Please don't say China!)
