Barack Obama: First Pacific President? Not exactly.
Singapore
This phrase, "first Pacific president," is everywhere here among President Obama's senior staff. In Tokyo yesterday, Obama used it himself:
As America's first Pacific President, I promise you that this Pacific nation will strengthen and sustain our leadership in this vitally important part of the world.
It is another feather, the White House seems to suggest, in the identity politics cap that this president wears--the first African American president, first president with a Muslim father, now the first "Pacific President," having been born in Hawaii and lived as a child in Indonesia. (White House speechwriter Jon Favreau uses the phrase here.)
But is this first Pacific president thing true? As a native of California, I feel I am obligated to object.
I was born and raised just a few miles from the Pacific Ocean. Does that not count? And if it counts for me, what should we say about two of our recent presidents--Ronald Reagan (born in Illinois, but came of age in Hollywood, becoming Governor of the Pacific state of California) or Richard Nixon (born in Yorba Linda, California, just a few miles from Newport Beach, served in the Pacific theater in World War II, represented California in the House and Senate.)
It seems awkward for Obama to claim that the United States and Asia are "bound" by the Pacific Ocean, but those born on the U.S. side of that bind do not count as "Pacific" people. But then I guess "first Pacific president" sounds better than "me and Richard Nixon are two Pacific presidents."

well as a Californian, i completely knew what he meant. the "pacific" is the islands. california isn't in the pacific, it's on the west coast. Nixon was a west coaster as well as Reagan.
"I was born and raised just a few miles from the Pacific Ocean"
but that's not the islands of the pacific. how the hell couldn't you know this? it's pretty basic stuff.

I totally agree. I was born just a few miles from the Pacific in southern California. I'm a "West Coaster," a "Californian," but not an "Islander" and not "Pacific." President Obama is right.

Sh!t! I had a pretty decent post and it's in moderation. There's another word we can't say.

Well, who the fock cares, Micheal.
.
I'm from the Pacific region and I could really care less! -

Hell, mike, my comment is even more appropriate here!

The Pacific is considered the island off of the west coast. Michael, you and Sarah need to study a map. At least Sarah was correct on where Russia is but her believing that Africa was country was just too much. Study, study, study.

Hey, here's a tangentially related question:
.
Why do our resident wingnuts seem to hate Japan so much?
.
Rusty has stated that he wants the genocide of the Japanese.
.
Spob wants the POTUS to do a victory dance in Nagasaki, dressed as Fat Man (if I may be permitted to engage in some hyperbole).
.
I don't understand. What did our staunch allies do that we should hate them so, 50 years after their unconditional surrender?
.
Or are Rusty and Spob modern day Aztecs, demanding human sacrifices to their war gods Reagan and Cheney, atop the Pentagon?-
8.1
Cliff: Republicans feel a strange need to go out of their way to antagonize our allies. Remember when Rummy was openly contemptuous of "old Europe" (ie NATO)?
-
8.2
Well, yeah, and there's always the wretched, cretinous John Bolton to consider.
.
But what drives it? Do they consider Japan to be weak, and they hate it for its weakness? -

Having lived in Hawai`i myself:
If you think California is like Hawai`i, then you've never spent any time in Hawai`i. (Or if you did, you never left Waikiki.)
-

Nixon wasn't a Pacific President. He was a crook.
-
11
And this is what you choose to blog about from the trip so far. You continue to underwhelm with your obsession with trivia.
I didn't even read your Japan post yet. Maybe I should go do that.
Hang on... I'll be right back...
Well, that's better. Some substance. I suspect spob and company will be disappointed that you didn't report breathlessly on "the bow." You know, the act that is certain to, once again, doom America. (Along with Michelle Obama's dress choice and Obama's "call-out.")

If this is an attempt at humor it is a lead balloon. Surely somebody can take this and go with some funny lines related to bodies of water or bodies or the relationship of OC to the rest of the Pacific. Surface area related to? Cultural relevance? MS how did you come up with this? Why did you not follow what surely was your first instinct to abandon this thread?

13
Pffft. First Citizen of the World President and not a moment too soon.
-
14
I was born and raised just a few miles from the Pacific Ocean. Does that not count?
No, Michael, no it does not count.
.
I mean, do you consider China to be a "Pacific" nation? What about Russia? Seriously, your post is all kinds of fail. -
15
Rather innocuous post, IMO. While BHO alone (not Ronnie or Dick) can lay claim to "Pacific," I think the term Michael could've employed to describe himself would be the Pacific Rim. But I'm sure we could come up with a lot of other interesting nom de plumes for Mike. Sacred?
Interesting that Obama chooses to portray himself as an other (compared to our typical Augusta-National roster of presidents)--there's no doubt this plays well diplomatically in this part of the world. Of course, this puts the nativists at home completely around the bend.

"The first pacific president"? Is anyone surprised that a race baiting, race obsessed, racial tribalist and Jeremiah Wright disciple continues to push racial identity, particularly fabricated tales of being the "first pacific president"? Can we just get the clueless socialist to stop damning the United States of America on his endless America Sucks World Tours?

このポウストはとても馬鹿馬鹿しい!マイクル シェアラアは日本に行きましか?
マイクル シェアラアで日本語を分かることができますか?
日本に行きたい!
Nothing like some terrible Japanese to highlight the ridiculousness of Mr Scherer's post!
(Although, I'm just jealous. I want to be in Japan instead of him!
) -
18
This is just dumb.
Our president's on a trip abroad, and THIS is what you choose to highlight? Nitpicking that he refers to Pacific Rim populations as "Pacific", and how you used to be able to see the Pacific Ocean from your house, so -- ha ha, Mr President, take that? Is this a bad attempt at humor?
I doubt that many Californians, other than you, would group themselves together with Pacific Islanders. Ugh. Usually I think commenters are being harsh when they rag on you, Scherer, but crap like this makes it clear where they get the inspiration.

Curious the things Michael decides to finally fact check. Did Obama say he was the first president born on the pacific coast? Does being born in New Mexico make you south american?
-
19.1
If 1000 miles is the farthest from the Pacific you can be and still be 'Pacific', then someone in New Mexico could be both 'Pacific' and 'South American'!
.
Though, of course, Santiago, Chile would fit the bill more nicely, I think...

Ladies and gentleman, our first Muslim president.
-
21
I'm waiting for some dull spark to focus on the word pacific. "Is that why he is delaying his decision on Afghanistan?"
Japan has been a dependable ally so I guess MS has no story line on the subject of US-Japan relations.
-
22
"ALSO: My story on Obama's visit to Japan is posted here."
This post may be the least effective inducement to read a story I can think of.
-
23
The post is pretty standard fare with a hint of change because the new PM is not part of the old (traditional?) power elites.
The question of Okinawa has been skimmed over. The behaviour of a few of our soldiers has caused tension. The refusal of the US to allow crimes alleged to have been committed in bars and other hangouts to be dealt with by the Japanese authorities is a source of friction. There has been some progress but, overall, the Japanese don't see the value in a link between established economic and political relations with the US and the continuing presence of US forces.
-
24
All these "Firsts". Amazing.
.
I think that people in the United States desire and want THEIR President to be an AMERICAN President, First.
.
Everything else is secondary.
.
Enough already with all the bull-crap. I frankly could care less what "firsts" Obama has pulled off, so far he is DEAD LAST in the race to become Presidential.-

Oh, shut up rusty!

You're as dumb as a warm rock on a windowsill. He is an American.

You just don't like the fact that civil rights and all that is a done deal. So go home and cry on your hood and gown like you used to...-
