Asia trip? What Asia trip? Obama's Spokesman Parries Afghanistan Questions In The Air
Elmendorf Air Force Base, Alaska
In an early sign of how President Obama's trip to Asia will likely go, White House spokesman Robert Gibbs came back to the press cabin on Air Force One Thursday to a torrent of questions that were not about the president's trip to Asia. “Can we start with Afghanistan, and why the president thought that the options he was presented were not sufficient and why he sent them back,” came the first query out of the gate.
It is an awkward problem of timing for Obama's staff, who had hoped that coverage of the trip would focus mainly on describing the president's commitment to deep engagement with the Far East. But Afghanistan is the news. More particularly, it is news that Obama sent back the Pentagon's four options for the war, asking for more detail. “I think you may have heard from [Defense] Sec. [Robert] Gates today that the president is evaluating the options and choosing what is best in all of them. What the president wants to ensure is that we take into account and understand so that the American people can understand, our time commitment and ensure that we have the strongest partner in the Afghan government.”
Gibbs did not explain why those factors were not sufficiently detailed in the four options that have been presented to Obama.
Later Gibbs did add, “We have been there for eight years, and we are not going to be there forever. It's important to fully examine not just how we are going to get folks in, but how we are going to get folks out.”
In Alaska, the president plans to meet with the family of a soldier who died in Afghanistan. He will meet with a group of about 12 locally based troops, to take questions. Then he will address a group of about 2,000 troops, a speech that was originally scheduled to be delivered on Veterans' Day.
We are now holding in an airplane hanger where more than a thousand soldiers are awaiting Obama's speech. The live band is doing a cover of the Sugarhill Gang's "Rapper's Delight"--with sax solo. No joke.

Oh, if only Sarah Palin wasn't a quitter. She could have met Air Force One on the tarmac as governor.
Either that, or she could have kept a sharp eye out for incoming Russian fighter jets from her front porch.

I'm surprised MS didn't sneak out to interview Sarah. Than again, if he's bored with Gibbs and all that Afghanistan talk, he could try to report behind-the-scenes stuff on that MMA match between Larry “Hardball” King vs. Carrie “Hand of God” Prejean. Actually, I now wonder if anyone asked Gibbs about that. Will Obama need to hold a beer photo-op after he gets back from Asia trip?

That LKL interview was awful. I expected Carrie to take matters into her own hands, but she only threatened to walk off and then didn't even do that. She just fumbled around while taking off the mic, then she just sat there and whined.

Couple of questions:
1) Did Bush routinely announce that he was going to visit with families of the fallen?
.
2) "Gibbs did not explain why those factors were not sufficiently detailed in the four options that have been presented to Obama." Doesnt that presuppose that Robert Gibbs is smart enough to give said explanation?-
2.1
He most certainly did and btw he only met with the families of soldier who were on the right side, he didn't meet with families that were opposed to him or the war.

Now what you hear is not a test, MS....

MS, if you tire of Gibbs' platitudes, be sure to glance out the window once in a while. The Aleutians from 35,000' are a site to behold.

I don't know, I guess I've been lucky. Done that trip US west coast Asia nearly a dozen times and I only recall once or twice not being able to see 'em. -

Sigh, when will you guys understand that the only people who study foreign policy trips in real time are the locals, not the audience back home.
As my mama used to say, if you have nothing to say, then say nothing. Shame you never met her.

1. Are there really people that believe it was Sarah Palin that said she could see Russia from her house and not Tina Fey? Some real intellectual giants.
2. Dee, I guess you forgot about Sheehan. (Remember, it only takes one exception to prove a point false.)

Now, true, she didn't technically say "my house" but she's just so gosh darned retarded that we make fun of her for that anyway.

Maybe they should ask Michelle how she would feel if hotpants came back.

When you link to Michelle Malkin to prove a point you may as well just scream Wharrrrgarrrblll!

Whatever is on the other side of that link is just or less coherent.

One cannot help but wonder how long can the US president sustain his euphoric wind of change that has been sweeping across Asia since January? Chances are the wind is fast dying down especially when there has been hardly any encouraging or solid change perceived in either domestic or foreign affairs.
Afghanistan aside, perhaps he ought to walk the path of collaboration and trust instead of isolation and suspicion when visiting Asia.

I have no idea why the press is dumb enough to think we want to read abbout what your not told about Afghan on this trip. You are not going to be told the plan in a foreign country. Why not cover the trip your on? That is what I'm interested in. You can act like idiots when your back at the WH..

Thank you Karen for bringing this to our attention. It is hypocritical to ask for any abortion payments not to be included in a health insurance policy which is government backed by tax payer dollars, but your own private insurance would have abortion coverage. It is indeed shameful.
.
While you were INVESTIGATING this Karen, did you also find out if any Republican had actually used an abortion benefit? Do you have on record anyone or their family members, who work for the RNC, who may have used the abortion benefit?
.
What about congressional insurance policies, do those policies contain an abortion benefit?
.
Or, is this simply another MEDIA GAME of playing GOTCHA journalism?-

Sorry Michael, this was meant for the previous thread.

It is amazing how the Republinut Zombies will find anything and everything they can to criticize Obama.
When you resort to personal attacks it usually is because of the bias of your arguments.
(Of course, the Zombies were the same gullible ones that took Boob, Chummey, and Rumsnuts at face value and still believe the lies of "Weapons of Mass Destruction," Saddam being a friend of Al Qaeda, how Enron would solve our energy problems, and how the profits of Greenspan's friends on Wall Street would be good for the rest of us.
As a Former Republican of 40 years I view the TeaBuggers revolution with amusement since I think the Republican Party in the last 8 years has done more to hurt the USA than the Communists ever did.
Tragically I voted for Bush #43 twice because the Democrats had even more inept candidates. That is part of the Obama "revolution" to also get the jerks out of the Democrat party. I am sure Obama didn't mind at all having Rod Blagojevich say "f*ck Obama."
I view Blagojevich's assessment as a compliment to our President.
It also puts all of the other critics of President Obama in the same category as Blagojevich.

By the way, there IS a solution to our fighting in Afghanistan that may appeal to both “conservatives” who what to pour thousand of troop and millions of dollars into bringing uncivilized and corrupt Afghanistan into the 21st Century and “liberals' who view this as a waste of people and money.
Have China do it.
There is an irony in Obama not finding an acceptable (and productive/practical) solution for our deployment in Afghanistan just prior to his visit to China.
There is an irony in Obama visiting his half-brother who has a Chinese wife and which may make Obama seem to everyone in China as a member of their family
There is an irony in a border town in Mexico is requesting UN Peace Keepers to help restore law and order that their own corrupt police and army cannot provide.
There is an irony that only now it is revealed that China sent nuclear material to its buddy Pakistan in 1982 which also reflects the high level of credibility that China has in the Muslim world.
There is an irony that China's mining activity is the single largest non-military investment in Afghanistan of any other country.
Is there a pattern or am I fanaticizing about the dots that I am creating.
Afghanistan needs law and order and infrastructure, not military force, to bring it into the 21st Century. In fact a security force could be more effective just thoroughly monitoring the borders to stop drug and weapons and terrorists even more than it could by fighting in specific villages. (Drugs and weapons have to physically be transported to have value. It is almost amusing that Russia now has a rising heroin problem from their lack of border control.)
We buy almost everything else from China. Why not buy about 150,000 mercenaries? They could even send about 50,000 of the Peace Keepers to help Pakistan. And since “absolute power corrupts absolutely” the UN could even authorize India to send monitors to keep the Chinese Peace Keepers under control.
While it may be an “outside of the box” solution, it is also the ONLY logical solution.
