The Wisdom of Michelle Bachmann, Weekend Edition

I know it's not sporting or even reasonable to expect Michelle Bachmann to make sense, but this was just too good not to pass along. In her floor speech just now, the good congresswoman from Minnesota just appealed to her colleagues to vote down health reform because "our forebearers are crying out for us to preserve their freedoms."

This raises some fascinating philosophical and theological questions: Do we still need health care after we die? Maybe in hell, but not in heaven? Does God offer a choice between health savings accounts and a single-payer system? Or is that instead of fire and brimstone, hell is listening to health reform debates for all of eternity? It sure seems like it after today.

…Amy, sorry to point out, but Michele Bachmann has one L in her first name. Hope you can enjoy some late cosmos or LI iced teas if a nearby club will stay open late enough.

First the infants. Then the dead people. It's the circle of life. The circle of life.

...and Amy, if you're allowed to speak there, or if not pass this along to a rep. who can, but if Michele had the same freedoms as her forebearers, she wouldn't be allowed to vote, but I digress. (any chance of sneaking in some pizza and wine for you and Jay to get thru this?) Maybe Hell will be listening to Sarah Palin read her “Going Rogue” book. Oh wait….

The video of her floor speech.

I don't think we have politicians as crasy as her in Canada but some of them could win the prize if she is not re-elected.

Amy, please help me out. i am just curious. From your posts, i have absolutely no idea which side of the fence you are on..do you favor the republican proposals or do you think they should push this healthcare bill through. Due to your professionalism as a journalist I detect no bias or favoratism what so ever as to who's side you are more sympathetic to. Your objectivity is stellar. I am sure since you are making fun of Bachman..there will be a similar post about Pelosi. Keep up the great work.

    Amy, Amy, Amy...
While I am no fan of the ramblings and rantings of Bachman, are you really that dense as to construe her speech as suggesting that our deceased forefathers are weighing in on this debate? Her speech, however magniloquent, was meant to imply that this health-care bill increases the scope of the federal government far beyond what was sought by the framers of the Constitution. Got it?

      Neo:
      .
"Bible Girl" can't even comprehend religious issues. How in God's green and blue earth do you expect her to grasp the complexity of Government take over of health care insurance, an increase in our national debt to over 3 TRILLION dollars this year alone if this bill passes. How the Democrat Health Care Reform bill is nothing short of the biggest government entitlement program that has ever been proposed.
      .
Amy could possibly rationalize the Stupak bill to enforce the Hyde Admendment which will not allow for Federal funds to be used for abortions, unless when a woman's life is in danger or in cases of rape. It is a very short and simple bill, and I am confident Amy could comprehend this admendment to the 1990 page monstrosity called "Pelosi / Obama Health Care Reform" of 2009.
      .
No, Amy feels empowered to make fun of Michelle Bachman. Why? Amy apparently needs a self esteem boost.

    Hey Amy,

You seem to fancy yourself a journalist. How about providing an acurrate quote? As per the youtube link in the comment above, Bachmann said:

“The American people, our forbearers, generations yet born, unborn, are crying out to us tonight for us to preserve their freedoms.”

In addition to leaving out the words "to us," you wrenched the words "our forebearers" out of context to make it seem like Bachmann was saying that our forebearers - and no one else - were the ones "crying out." I suppose that sort of quotation could be technically defended if you had added an ellipse (...). You did not add an ellipse. Thus, you dishonestly quoted Bachmann.

Furthermore, even had you added an ellipse, your quote would be misleading (if technically "accurate") because you would not have conveyed the essential message of Bachmann's statement, which is that past, present, and future generations of Americans, given the choice, would resist the bill.

And this point leads me to discuss the next (and probably most) important flaw with your analysis. You have no understanding of figurative language. Yes, from a hyper-literal point of view, Bachmann's statement makes no sense and would invoke the fascinating questions you sarcastically raise. But of course, as figurative language - the mode of rhetoric Bachmann was demonstrably employing - the statement makes sense in an obvious way.

So basically, you misquoted Bachmann in order to make it seem like Bachmann was saying something she wasn't saying. And then you made fun of her for it.

And, given that such drivel passes for journalism these days, you'll probably somehow become famous or make money off of it. Best of luck,

    Jay Kraft

Amy can't help herself. Liberals always twist the truth to meet their beliefs. if they used facts it would show how wrong they really are. They must demonized anyone that doesn't believe as they do. They lack any real moral ground.

This horrible, obnoxious stupid ass of a Representative stopped being funny months ago.
Or have I just lost my sense of humor about hatemongering?

  • 8

Perhaps Amy could comment on Obama's botched reaction to the Ft. Hood shooting, since we're talking about "wisdom".

Even the Globe's editorial page wasn't happy with it.
    .
Of course, the Globe wasn't rude enough to mention Obama's calling a Medal of Freedom a Medal of Honor.

    "The Wisdom of Michele Bachman"

FTW. I could never come up with something that funny.

    • 9.1

Something even funnier, sacred. Michelle and the like are going to have the majority in less than a year. ROTFL

    • 9.2

I'll take that bet. I fully expect them to pick up seats but not enough to switch control.
      .
OT, but there was an armed robbery a few evenings ago out here where I live. We live very close to a church and it happened in their parking area just after the sun went down. Unreal. It saddens me that we have to start locking our doors.

    • 9.3

Ah sacred, that's a shame. At the risk of sounding like a redneck ( I proudly am one) did the robee have a gun? I'll explain myself.
I live in a little burg that consists of roughly 30 houses and we have zero crime. We lock our doors when we leave home, but if we forget it's no big deal, I've done it many times. Every house has at least one gun, (usually collecting dust), but no crime. There's no better place to raise you're kids. I'll just metion in passing that all of my neighbors are conservative, I'm sure it doesn't mean anything, but........
As far as our parties go, man, you've gotta admit we sure are giving the dems a fit considering 'yalls majority. I'm thinking with even a few seats gained in 2010 ( I still say majority) we'll be giving them even more of a fit. We're taking a big chunk of the independant vote. Every one who ridcules the "teabaggers" seem to think we are all republican voters. Not so. A large portion are independants. I have a lot of democrat friends but none of them are defending their party. In conversation they would much rather talk football than politics. I seriously doubt they even vote in midterms. All of us consevatives and a big chunk of independants do though. You owe me two marlboro reds and a cup 'o joe if I win this bet!

    Krautie11,
Brilliant dissection of Ms. Sullivan's post, thus exposing her deception and bigotry.
She is unsurpassed in dropping words and sentences and edit here and there to suit her liberal agenda.
Hers is cafeteria journalism at its best (or worst!).

Is "the wisdom of Michelle" now supposed to replace "1000 words" or "The week that was"?

I guess it cuts down on the research budget.
