A blog about politics.

And We're Off...

The House has just started debate on the rule on the health care bill. Thus far Rep. Tom Price, a George Republican, has objected to every speaker – mostly women Democratic representatives talking about women's health care issues (note to GOP: the optics of Price bullying and yelling over these women ain't great). If it's gonna be like this all day – we're gonna be here until Monday easily. This is already much uglier than the passage of Medicare Part D. So much for the GOP saying they aren't going to employ delaying tactics...

We're expecting a Democratic caucus at 11am with President Obama speaking at 11:25. GOP leaders, meanwhile, holds a press conference  at 11:45. If the schedule is adhered to we expect final passage between 7-8pm. Unfortunately right now – considering all the screaming that is already going on – that looks unlikely.

Update:
Although I loathe Media Matters as a rule, this is a decent mash up of the morning debate.

Rep. Price is just using his constitutional right to make a complete ass of himself.

Thank you for helping Jay Newton-Small reinforce her Dem talking points. You earned two BHOPoints and can now redeem your Hope'N'Change cup holder.
      .
Meanwhile, here's what a hack like JNS will never tell you about the bill.

Good morning, Jay. Are you tag-teaming with Kate or Amy to cover this? More all-nighters perhaps? Are you more of a night owl and NOT a morning person? My condolences if you have to pull morning shift here. Which issues do you think will drag out debates the most? Funding? The PO? Hot-button stuff like abortion and other women's HC issues (as you've already hinted)? Given many women's HC issues mentioned at this blog involve areas “down there,” can we officially call these HC issues “The Pubic Option”? (I couldn't resist). Thoughts? Thanks, Jay. Try to get some rest, drinking, and football watching this weekend.

    • 2.1

If we're going to descend to the level of "Pubic Option" type material, I want a "1000 Words" picture like the last one. That was great fun.

    • 2.2

Yes! That was fun and you had great comments. Alas, KT's out of town this weekend. Jay, if you're reading this, granted you're busy now but if KT's off the grid, could you wake up Amy (speak softly please, hangovers can be painful) or someone to copy / paste a “1000 words” for us nice people? thx

    • 2.3

I'm all for it too. Maybe you could give her a call and work something out.
      .
With the right photo, it can't take more than a minute or two and would provide us swampcritters with much needed entertainment!
      .
And with sacred on a roll like he's been the last few weeks, it'll be a grand event!
      .
Hell, maybe Friar will pop up, and Pirate Wench too...

I'm ready to make the descent. There were some great captions from quite a number of posters. After that horrific tragedy at Fort Hood, I wouldn't mind a little diversion. I work on a military-run installation and everybody has been on edge. It is like family.

Thanks for the kind words deconstructiva and 53_3. I have to go hop on the lawn tractor to mulch a few million more leaves and clean out my gutters for the 9th time this fall before I head off to work. My kingdom for a 50 mph wind to finish off the leaves.

    • 2.6

I agree sacred. You were just on a roll the past couple weeks.
      .
We have our own instance of death here in Seattle, which is exhibiting possible signs of terrorism. The week before the shooting of Officer Brenton of the SPD, a number of cars were destroyed (pipe bombs were used) and a threatening letter accompanied that act.
      .
We had all day coverage of the funeral. Near the end of the funearal, Tukwila police identified the shooter in that killing and a couple possible accomplices. They were surrounded in an apartment complex about 6 miles from here, and the shooter was shot (he's recovering, just relisted as 'serious') by SPD SWAT.
      .
The nature of the "hit" on Officer Brenton was very well planned, using strategies that implied a knowledge of law enforcement / military techniques.
      .
It is entirely possible that the GOP might open their lead over Al Queda for this years' body count.

    • 2.7

      No, sacred, you don't!
      .
You must sort every leaf by size, label it, and neatly stack them in piles of 100.

"Rep. Tom Price, a George Republican"
    .
Might want to check into that. Is he a "George Bush" Republican, or a "Curious George" Republican?
    .
    :)
    .
    Have a great day!

note to GOP: the optics of Price bullying and yelling over these women ain't great
    .
If the GOP were actually worried about optics, they'd be holding themselves at arms length from the Teabaggers. As it is, they're all True Believers!

  • 5

I love the reference to "optics". A winner, all around, JNS!
    .
I think that all this stuff will be absolutely great fodder for the 2010 election cycle.
    .
When I think about it, they have made a political career out of anger.
    .
The GOP will soon become known as the party of Hell No! We Won't Go! and Fock Democracy!
    .
I look forward to the assbolts from the right...

"note to GOP: the optics of Price bullying and yelling over these women ain't great"

    .
Perhaps your assessment of "yelling and bullying" is merely our Congressional Representatives in action as usual.
    .
I have been listening to the statements all day. What I have witnessed is usual protocols. "The Gentlewoman from New York", simply has a very low and soft, grandmotherly like voice and demeanor. Not to be confused with the boisterous voices of most of the Republican men. Even the current "Speaker's" voice is not only loud, but he is also cutting off any Republican voices if they go over by one second.
    .
Hopefully the people of the US are watching this today. Hopefully they are listening to the Republicans and their resistance to the current monstrosity called "Nancy Pelosi's out of control and BIG GOVERNMENT HEALTH CARE BILL".
    .
If I had control of Congress, I would simply run Nancy Pelosi out of our Capitol on a rail, tarred and feathered. I am sure THEN you would hear "yelling and bullying" coming out of our dear Congressional Leaders mouth.

"If I had control of Congress, I would simply run Nancy Pelosi out of our Capitol on a rail, tarred and feathered."
      .
If you had "control of congress"? You can't.
      .
Aside from that, since she was elected by her constituants, you can't run her out of town on a rail, either.
      .
      Know why, Rusty?
      .
You know that piece of paper called the Constitution of the United States? Yeah, that piece of paper, Rusty! You got it!
      .
      You should read it sometime...

    • 6.2

      Um, Rusty:
      .
What about all those EVEN BIGGER GOVERNMENT SUBSIDIES TO RURAL AMERICA?
      .
Let's start there! Hell yes! Let's get rid of the handouts you suck out of my pocket, you human leech, you! Hell, every year you suck more than 15 times the amount of money that the poor ever did out of my pocket!
      .
      Hell yes...

    deconstructiva:
" .. could you wake up Amy (speak softly please, hangovers can be painful) .."

Nah, Amy never approaches, let alone touches, any hangover agent, the devil juice ..
[but then, eh, .. why, o why, did mother superior hastily eject her out of that nunnery ... ]

    • 8.1

“ .. why, o why, did mother superior hastily eject her out of that nunnery ... “
      .
I'd love to know why too. Hopefully Amy will tell us here or in her next book (also looking forward to books from KT and Jay). Of course, Amy wouldn't be too naughty; self-evident proof of her goodness is her graduation from Harvard Divinity School. HDS is picky about whom they accept and graduate.

JNS: "the optics of Price bullying and yelling over these women ain't great"

But the optics of terrorizing our hard-working mothers and daughters - precious ...

rustyreturns: " .. simply run Nancy Pelosi out of our Capitol on a rail, tarred and feathered. .."

Wow, yelling and screaming??? How desperate this mess must look.
As for the delay tactics, did the Democrats not expect this from the Republicans, if so, how did they prepare???

I hope President Obama is really going to change politics for good maybe starting with imposing punishment for loud mouth Reps who try to bully women on the floor?? Sheesh!

The optics of the Republicans bullying and yelling over the Democratic women's caucus made this this woman angry. I wanted to hear what they had to say.

Do they really want to lose the women's vote too?

    • 11.1

Do you mean lose the women's vote again? They're zeroed in on the angry white male vote.

JNS: "Although I loathe Media Matters as a rule"

Gee, I can't imagine why. That says a whole bunch about how you approach "journamalism".

  • 15

"Although I loathe Media Matters as a rule"
    .
Since you put it out there, and you have explained that you just put the facts out and let the reader decide, would you care to explain your "rule"?
