Fort Hood

This is devastating, especially given the extraordinary service and sacrifices the 1st Cavalry has already made, especially in Iraq. If you want to know more about this remarkable unit--and their community at Fort Hood--read this book.

One other thing: If it is true that Nadal Malik Hasan is a psychiatrist, as is being reported, then he has probably spent the past six years dealing with post-traumatic stress disorder, brain injuries and the other psychological effects of this unnecessary war. There's no way of knowing, yet, whether that experience led to this horror. But I'm sure this act will cause additional anguish, and confusion, for those who were being treated by the Major. How terribly sad.

Is the First Cavalry the unit also known historically as The Big Red One -- the unit that was distinguished in Vietnam?

    • 1.1

No, the Big Red One is the First Infantry Division. By the way, it wasn't just distinguished during the Vietnam War. It performed with distinction during World War I and World War II ....

    .
Of course, Joe cannot resist making a political statement in the course of this atrocity: "this unnecessary war". KT, MS, JNS et alia, do you agree with Joe's insertion of politics into this?

    • 2.1

This is Joe's 3rd attempt at being relevant and insightful today.

Still no runs no hits only errors!

    • 2.2

At least Joe acknowledges the valour of these men. Something you and your fellow fundamentalists are incapable of doing.

You treat the sacrifice of human life in the same way Al - Qaeda does.

    • 2.3

      abdullah69

I never question the valor of the men who serve our country. What I question is dimwit leftists in this country who take every tragic occasion to take a cheapo shot on a war these brave men fight.

    • 2.4

The same way Al Qaeda never questioned the valour of the men who crashed into the WTC. As far as we know they jut used them for serve their warped ideologies same as you do.

Not to question is not the same as to acknowledge, to honour and to respect.

Human life does not suddenly become worthless once it is outside the womb, you know.

    • 2.5

      abdullah69

You equate the men in our military with the terrorists? Seriously? You are a confirmed idiot.

"Human life does not suddenly become worthless once it is outside the womb, you know"

That's an interesting statement! I look forward to your questioning and chastizing the pro-abortion advocates here who, unquestionably place no value on the most defenseless of us in the unborn.

  • 3

A friend of mine is a psychologist in the exact same unit, scheduled to ship off Nov. 28th. Does anyone know if it was random people on base that were shot or member in unit? I can't find anything yet.

Whack job leftist loon Joe Klein asserts: "If it is true that Nadal Malik Hasan is a psychiatrist, as is being reported, then he has probably spent the past six years dealing with post-traumatic stress disorder, brain injuries and the other psychological effects of this unnecessary war. There's no way of knowing, yet, whether that experience led to this horror."

Predictably, leftist loon Klein makes an allegation completely void of any evidence. Predictably, leftist loon Klein blames the mass murders committed by a mass murderer on "this unnecessary war".

  • 5

According to a retired colonel who knew Hasan (or "the major" as leftist loon Klein calls him), Hassan shared the views of Joe Klein and the leftist fringe that the war in Iraq is an "unnecessary war". How shocking. NOT!

    Textee-

Muslim extremism is not leftist fringe. They have more in common with the Christian right than lefty loons. Both Muslim extremism and the Chritian right are not tolerate of others viewpoints and want to dictate how people behave.

    • 6.1

"want to dictate how people behave."

On the contrary, it is the left who wants to tell people how to spend their money, who should have their money, require they buy HC insurance, require others to pay for it and the list goes on. But more to the point the Muslim extremists have the same hate for America and its traditional values that the left does as one can hear in nearly every Obama speech.

    • 6.2

And of course it is the left who want to tell people whether they can have an abortion or not, whether they can learn evolution in schools, whether they can get married,,,,,,,,,,,,,

    • 6.3

"same hate for America ... as one can hear in nearly every Obama speech."

Please refrain from insulting our president by insinuating that he hates the country he is sworn to protect- your hatred for America is showing.

    • 6.4

Didn't right wing (National Review) writer Dinesh D'Souza write a book called The Enemy at Home whose central thesis was that we were attacked on 9/11 because radical Islam hates the left wing and the cultural freedoms they represent, so we must become more intolerant of gays, women, atheists, Mexicans, etc. (i.e. if you can't beat 'em join em)?

    • 6.5

Textee has said something wrong, comparing christians to muslims.
Christians are tolerant. And the answer is the USA: a Christian Nation where homossexuals are free to show their opinions and even to organizate themselves politically.
Compare this to any other Muslim nation.
It is a lie to say something like this.

Therefore you, textee are helping to spread the hate to Christians. This is a typical example of "enlightened" hate speech, but HS the same.

Please, someone inform the clueless socialist in the White House and his like-minded anti-military militants who prepare his telepromter that Fort Hood is NOT an "Army base". Fort Hood is an Army post, P-O-S-T. Please pass on same to Obama's useful idiots in the Washington press corps. Thank you ....

Joe: I had a bit of experience with PTSD (post traumatic stress syndrome during my years in the courtroom. I am reasonably sure it cannot be caught from the patient like a cold or the flu.

Given the amount of purposeful, goal-directed activity involved in these murders (pre-offense statements, internet postings, ideological motives, length of time planning, number of trigger pulls, use of multiple magazines) I think that any insanity defense is doomed to failure. Even throwing in "the other psychological effects of this unnecessary war" probably isn't going to work either.

But I'm not totally surprised that after this outrageous massacre that your first instinct would be to look for a politically correct excuse, rather than to find any moral responsibility. :-)

    • 8.1

I like the smiley face at the end of your rant. It really drives your moral superiority home.

    • 8.2

No, you can't "catch" PTSD from somebody else. However, if you're this guy, and you've spent the last six years hearing the worst stories, and seeing the worst injuries from the war, and are then told you're heading there, I can see that making him snap. Which, given the timing, looks like the most likely explanation.
      -
Also, you can feel bad about the fact that this dude snapped while still holding him accountable for his actions. As a psychiatrist he would have known better than most how to get help. He didn't. The lives he took are entirely on him. But this isn't the first time this has happened with American soldiers during this war. And it won't be the last.
      -
Remember when almost this exact same scenario happened a few years ago at Bragg? Guy opened up on a PT formation? That dude wasn't middle eastern or muslim. He was a soldier who'd been pushed farther than he could handle though. Just like this guy.

    • 8.3

Very good analogy retiredprosecutor. Very eloquently said, and evidence that you are what you say your were in the past. . Unfortunately folks like Joe Klein being in the far left extremist camp are now scared that one of their own has revolted, and caused harm to his fellow soldiers.
      .
Hasan is a 1st generation American. A life-long Muslim according to the words of his cousin in Virginia. Hasan became distressed it seems because of a planned deployment to Afghanistan, his 1st in over 8 years of the War on Terror working in the Military.
      .
I do find it odd however, that Hasan's rants as you have indicated all over the internet, within his company and the hospital that he worked went virtually un-noticed until yesterday. From sources close to this man, they all indicate that he was unstable, and clearly demonstrated unstable statements prior to his murder spree.
      .
It is unfortunate that our Military Commanders are basically hog-tied with one arm around their back when it comes to suspects or potential perpetrators. In Hasan's case, a Muslim, I am sure the politically correct "police" of our liberal left kept rational and sane decisions to further investigate this mass murderer from being brought out into the open before he unleashed his Islamic vengeance upon his fellow soldiers.
      .
It is clear now in hindsight, this was a premeditated act. An act that has been enabled by the liberal wing of our country. It simply proves to me that once Hasan discovered his deployment, he began to act out in hopes of a deferment. When that did not work he took action. Action in the form of murdering 13 of his fellow soldiers and maiming almost 30 others.
      .
Our liberal friends on this site should take a long hard look at what their words have done. They should look closely at what their words, ideals and goals stand for. Liberals have stood up recently against this country. Professed how "evil a country" we are. The liberal extremists feel empowered by their President Barack HUSSEIN Obama, who has made many incendiary speeches for the past 3 years he was thrust into the public limelight. It is clear that they have unleashed liberal demons among us now.
      .
Those of us who are politically conservative should be wary. God only knows when the next liberal nut-job will let loose in a crowded store or gathering.

OT, but this is what I'm always talking about: link.

    • 8.5

Why don't we all take a step back? This happened less then 24 hours ago. Right now all anyone can do is speculate as to why Major Hassan committed this act. Instead of quickly forming opinions based on rumor and conjecture why don't we give it a few days and see what unfolds. Just because the media is jumping to conclusions doesn't mean the rest of us have to follow.

The son of friends is a vet who has had a difficult time since Gulf 1. Thankfully, he's been able to pull it together with help from NAMI .
    .
Sadly, many vets do not get the mental health assistance they need.
    .
Perhaps the GOP has some Purple Heart Band-Aids left over from 2004 that it can part with...

The comment thread that textee points to teaches us a lot about the mechanics of hatred. The shooter is a Muslim therefore we should be at war with Islam. In the meantime he was being harassed daily within the Army for his religion. Granted, keying someones car falls short of a capital crime, but it does provide a nice illustration of how the people who are literally representing America to the Muslim world are probably not the most discerning when it comes to identitying who the enemy actually is.
    .
In the meantime John McCain doesn't think we have enough people in harms way.......

    • 10.1

Interesting paul. Yet another bleeding heart liberal portraying a ruthless murderer as the victim. As for your comment octavian, I'm all for making Abu Ghraib a never ending series, much like Friday thr 13th. I have no pity for the murderous muslim bastards. I'm a conservative, your a liberal. These murderers would happily kill us both. What part of that don't you understand?

Rusty is right. Its time for Abu Ghraib part 2. Lets start stacking up naked arabs! At least Rusty could have some new pictures to get off to.

  • 13

Everyone knows that Timothy Mcveigh, the Columbine shooting, Virginia Tech, the Holocaust museum shooting, and the unabomber. These were all scary muslims!

    • 13.1

      Your point octomom?

    • 13.2

Actually if you read through the Holocaust museum shooter "ideology" you see that he has something in common with Joe Klein: Neocons fixation - they both see neocon ploys in every corner.

  • 14

    Paul, u r truly a liberal idiot.

He gave Korans to his neighbors the day of the murders. He yelled "allah akbar allah akbar" during shooting. He used his neighbors computer to do research for assault. He talked with a fellow muslim store owner about being uncomfortable shooting other muslims when he was deployed..He was on a watch list from the FBI from comments he made in muslim blogs..yea..really sounds like PDS to me..

I do agree that it is terribly sad but I am also concerned about the fact that no one appears to have picked up on the level of distress in this man.

I do not believe he woke up one day and decided to massacre innocents. Was he such a good actor that his illness or as loathing for the system (as some are saying that he had) were just so well obscured?

On the news, they stated that in April this year, he was provided a clean bill of health, but obviously in the light of his rampage, that clearance was nonsense.
Irreparable damage has been done to those living (his patients) and the dead (those he slaughtered).

Is there no c-o-n-t-i-n-u-i-n-g check and balance in place to make sure these people who do these very difficult jobs are themselves cared for? I hope this is a wakeup call for all. Doctors and other practitioners in high stress environments need help and should also be monitored continuously for mental health and other general reasons.

What a sad sad event. My thoughts and prayers go out to the victims and their families.
