Michelle Obama--looking better than she did when she wore the garish cocktail dress to the Medal of Honor ceremony.

    • 2.1

Your most virulent haters are usually your biggest fans. Hi SPOB:)

    • 2.2

I've provided a link, tstar3, please tell me you're not such a Kool-Aid drinker that you think the dress is acceptable.

    • 2.3

By the way, tstar, does pointing out the dress make me a hater?

    • 2.4

Sure does. The soldiers' mom wore red...should she have worn all black. There was hooting and hollering when the president mentioned "Jared's boys" should that have been outlawed. If you look up the story after the Montis' got home they told their local paper that Michelle was gracious, very gracious. Do you think they cared if she came in a paper bag. My beef is that you guys never look at the substance and only look at the visuals...and you harp on Obama's supporters as kool aid drinkers because they are...wait for it...only fixated on the visuals. As the great philosopher Stephen Colbert said...PICK A SIDE WE ARE AT WAR.

    • 2.5

Hey Spob take a gander http://www.flickr.com/photos/whitehouse/3993796943/

      This is what matters.

FOR ALL THOSE WHO WANT TO SEE MICHELLE'S DRESS HERE IS A GOOD PICTURE.

  • 3

For those who may have forgotten the stunning lack of decency:
    .
    http://www.punditandpundette.com/2009/09/what-not-to-wear-to-medal-of-honor.html
    .
I don't know which was worse, that, or doing the photo-op thing (i.e., politicizing the dead) at Dover.

    • 3.1

A note about the photo... Let's think back to the last major political photo opp that involved a traditional Thanksgiving food.

    • 3.2

Are you talking about the fake turkey? You've got to be kidding. I was in the Navy. They always did a fake turkey for decoration, and you got the real thing for chow.

    • 3.3

No, spob, I'm talking every Republican male's fantasy gal, Sarah Palin.

    • 3.4

That was a pretty gaudy display for a MoH ceremony.

    • 3.5

Looking at photos of the ceremony, as opposed to a picture of the Obamas headed to it, I see that Michelle was in the audience. I also note that it was a presentation of a medal, and not a funeral, and the soldier's mother herself was wearing a red jacket, not a black dress. Michelle's dress, though colorful, looks good on her, and as she was in the audience and not participating, I don't think it was in any way inappropriate. Who, besides the faux outrage-o-rama crew, has said otherwise?

    • 3.6

I'm generally not much interested in whether she was or wasn't. Either way, I don't think it is very important at all.
      .
There's been so much faux outrage from the Spittle-and-Froth crowd over virtually every aspect of the Obama's life that I basically wish they'd just bust an aorta or two, run up massive medical bills, and be forced to file bankruptcy and live in penury for the rest of their lives while the rest of us move on to really important things.
      .
Spob is entitled to his opinions, but in reality, it's not going to amount to a hill of beans, or even a yam that looks like a priapulid worm that had swallowed a sea cucumber.
      .
So fockitall. I'm just going to go for the humor...

  • 4

Thanks, KT. Sorry if I haven't contributed much useful stuff to HC debates / rants this week, but I'll add to “1000 words.”

(My costume will be a Twilight-inspired vampire.)

  • 5

Look. We found Dick Cheney's heart.

    • 5.1

      Nah, that's tstar's brain.

    • 5.2

Nah, that's Rush Limbaugh's copulation device. It's a wee bit gnarled by being sucked on by 22,000,000 dittoheads, but apparently still perfectly serviceable.
      .
See scientific discussion on this find's aspects on the early history of the phylum Ecdysozoa at 18.

    • 5.3

Shame on you blob that resembles more of a heart or a kidney because it looks as though veins were disconnected with one long middle area...a brain has a cerebellum and a cerebrum and it is blueish with a tint of yellow...YOU FAIL

  • 6

Inspired by Sarah Palin's church, Michelle is learning to be a witch doctor too. Alas, sacrificing vegetables is NOT the same as sacrificing turkeys and wolves. Memo to Michelle: study the sacrifices of Cain and Abel. Veggies don't cut it, girl.

  • 7

Michelle tries to teach human anatomy with vegetable examples – yam for stomach as shown. Alas, the lessons with melons and cucumbers didn't go so well, especially when the conservative parents found out.

  • 8

Oh no! Government run healthcare operation to remove the gallbladder actually took out the whole stomach!

  • 9

Actually, I think that is a sweet potato and not a yam.

    • 9.1

Aren't they pretty much the same thing? Either way, they're delicious.

    • 9.2

Perhaps KT plays it safe: "yam" is pretty simple spelling.
She didn't want to end up as the talk of the town like that big-shot right wing nut who couldn't spell 'potatoe' - or something like that ...

  • 10

That yam will create a lot of tasty sweet potato fries.

  • 11

“Kids, screw eating healthy. I'm telling ya, sweet potato French fries are ohmygod sooo good…”
    .
Michelle is about to demonstrate for the kids how to prepare a freshly dug yam for dinner. Next will follow Sarah Palin demonstrating how to prepare a live turkey.

  • 12

So guys, what do we think of Michelle Obama's garish cocktail dress at the posthumous Medal of Honor ceremony?

    • 12.1

spob, you're obsessing on a dress. What is it you really want?

    • 12.2

This from someone with the tag "palininatowel"?
      .

    • 12.3

Good lord! You're right! That is my handle here!
      .
One thing about those damn colored women... They love to wear garish dresses and big hats!

    • 12.4

Amazing, you cannot defend her behavior (because it is indefensible), so you impute racism to me.
      .
      Weak.

    • 12.5

"Defend her behavior?" Because you don't like her dress choice?
      .
      Hilarious, spob.

    • 12.6

Are you kidding? She wore a garish cocktail dress (and there's a link upthread) to a posthumous Medal of Honor ceremony. You don't see how utterly classless that is?

    • 12.7

Bizarre, spob. You think that Michelle Obama is guilty of a fashion faux pas, and that she stained the presidency and our nation because of it.
      .
Weird. You, indeed, are obsessing. You're becoming as loony and fixated as Orly Taitz and the birthers.
      .
(By the way, that would be a great band name: Orly Taitz and The Birthers.)

    • 12.8

I "think" that Obama is guilty of a "fashion faux pas"? Are you kidding? A fashion faux pas is showing up post labor day for some event in a white dress (scary that I know that). Showing up at a posthumous Medal of Honor ceremony dressed like that? That's just wrong.
      .
Man, is Kool-Aid really that tasty?

    • 12.9

      "Wrong?" Because...

    • 12.10

      spob:
      .
Do you mind if I point out that the expression fashion police is an expression, and nothing more?

    • 12.11

I don't know, because her choice of attire was equivalent to showing up at a funeral in a t-shirt.
      .
If you can't get that, palininatowel, then you're dumber than I thought.

    • 12.12

Guys, her dress was tacky and rude and completely inappropriate for the solemness of the occasion.
      .
It's not a matter of fashion police or fashion faux pas.

    • 12.13

Okay, spob, if you say so. I am sure Fox News covered the subject in-depth. You should watch the video in Sherer's piece, below, of Jon Stewart's take on Fox "News."
      .
Your trumped-up indignation over Michelle Obama's dress choice reminds me of the Fox News piece on the New Jersey school kids' song-singing that was labeled "indoctrination" by the giant brains at Fox.
      .
Maybe folks like you (the 23% of America that still calls itself "Republican") can get your knickers in a knot over something like that, but the rest of America just looks at you and laughs at your bizarre obsession.
      .
As I note upthread, you're beginning to border on Taitz territory...

    • 12.14

I will agree that the dress probably would not have been my first choice for that type of event. Shoes looked good though. What were the other people at the event wearing? Paticularly other civilian women? We need more of a context of her surroundings. More photos (including of the guests) please!

    • 12.15

I see the true believers are out in force today. Have a good weekend.

    • 12.16

Does that make me unAmerican for liking her dress? Much better than some pants suit that others have been known to wear...

    • 12.17

spob, we agree on the "true believers" part. As I note in my post, above, only the crazed 23% are obsessing on what Michelle Obama wore to a Medal of Honor ceremony.
      .
And that damn judge in California must be a Kool-Aid drinker, too, because he threw out Orly's latest wackadoodle lawsuit.
      .
Are you still getting the secret messages beamed in through your fillings?

    • 12.18

Spob does have a point, in this instance, about the tastelessness of Michelle's attire, although he does seem unduly obsessed by it. I'd rate it as possibly the biggest politico-fashion faux pas since Dick Cheney wore a parka to ceremonies at Auschwitz.
      .
      That said, BFD.

    • 12.19

Cheney wore the parka because of his heart condition. It was bitterly cold that day, which, absent warm clothing, is not so good for the ticker.

    • 12.20

      Haha! Wow!
      .
Kindof like wearing a parka in remembrance of the victims of Auschwitz... (link)
      .
      What a maroon!!1!

    • 12.21

It is a widely agreed upon norm that one wear, pardon the term, 'conservative' attire to funerals and, certainly, a posthumous Medal of Honor ceremony. Pure and simple. Obsessing over Mrs. Obama's lack of propriety in this regard is not necessary, however, it appears to be directly related to certain commentator's odd views that she was wholly within tasteful bounds to wear such a gaudy, loud, and inappropriate dress and to make obscene suggestions as to Spob's motives for pointing out what he sees as an offensive lack of respect. The only reason this has gone on for as long as it has is because certain individuals strangely wish to challenge this view.

    • 12.22

spob, from a contemporaneous article in the Washington Post at the time of Cheney's parka faux pas:
      .

The ceremony at the Nazi death camp was outdoors, so those in attendance, such as French President Jacques Chirac and Russian President Vladimir Putin, were wearing dark, formal overcoats and dress shoes or boots. Because it was cold and snowing, they were also wearing gentlemen's hats. In short, they were dressed for the inclement weather as well as the sobriety and dignity of the event.
      .
The vice president, however, was dressed in the kind of attire one typically wears to operate a snow blower.
      ...
It reminded one of the way in which children's clothes are inscribed with their names before they are sent away to camp. And indeed, the vice president looked like an awkward boy amid the well-dressed adults.
      .
Like other attendees, the vice president was wearing a hat. But it was not a fedora or a Stetson or a fur hat or any kind of hat that one might wear to a memorial service as the representative of one's country. Instead, it was a knit ski cap, embroidered with the words "Staff 2001." It was the kind of hat a conventioneer might find in a goodie bag.
      .
It is also worth mentioning that Cheney was wearing hiking boots -- thick, brown, lace-up ones. Did he think he was going to have to hike the 44 miles from Krakow -- where he had made remarks earlier in the day -- to Auschwitz?

      .
As for your bogus "herat condition" excuse for Cheney, it's just that -- bogus. Also form the article:
      .

Just last week, in a frigid, snow-dusted Washington, Cheney sat outside through the entire inauguration without so much as a hat and without suffering frostbite. And clearly, Cheney owns a proper overcoat. The world saw it during his swearing-in as vice president. Cheney treated that ceremony with the dignity it deserved -- not simply through his demeanor, but also through his attire. Would he have dared to take the oath of office with a ski cap on? People would have justifiably considered that an insult to the office, the day, the country.

      .
And you want to call others, "Kool-Aid drinkers?"
      .
      Too funny...

    • 12.23

Exiled, I only responded to spob because he posted the same thing twice in this thread. Yes, he is obsessing. One can argue the appropriateness of Obama;s attire at the event, but spob wanted to have a conversation about it. Why esle would spob post a comment seeking response twice?
      .
And then spob goes and lies about Cheney's parka wearing at Auschwitz.
      .
By the way, the ceremony in question was held on September 15. So spob's choice to seek comments on it in this particular blog entry is certainly odd, would you agree?

    • 12.24

Mr. Cheney looked like a damn fool, to be sure. Although not entirely unexpected, given that he is a fool. On this, we agree. However, the relevance of Mrs. Obama's attire is, I would say, not in question given that this is a 1000 Words thread, and thus pretty much fair game for all. Spob began this with "Michelle Obama--looking better than she did when she wore the garish cocktail dress to the Medal of Honor ceremony." I'd say benign enough. It has snowballed well beyond its shelf-life, though, at this point.

    • 12.25

Oh, now, Exiled, you conveniently ignore spob's second posting on the subject -- the post that starts off this very thread:
      .

So guys, what do we think of Michelle Obama's garish cocktail dress at the posthumous Medal of Honor ceremony?

      .

As for your determination of what is too much, I liken it to spob's determination of Michelle Obama's fashion sense.

    • 12.26

As I said, being a 1000 Words thread, all is fair game, even, *gasp*, a less than supportive view of Mrs. Obama's propriety. As for your determination that my preference to see this topic dwindle to the annals of history is as ill-conceived as Spob's "obsession" with the "colored" woman's attire, I would ask: aren't you yourself making a determination about what is too much in your espousal of Spob's "obsession?" Clearly, by obsessing, you imply he has gone overboard, much as this entire waste of dialogue has.

    • 12.27

      Exiled,
      .
      Oh, to be judged!
      .

Clearly, by obsessing, you imply he has gone overboard, much as this entire waste of dialogue has.

      .
      Thanks for your contribution!

  • 18

    Teabagger larva.

    • 18.1

Must be. Some paleozoologists have discussed the possibility that teabaggers are stem-group Ecdysozoa, retaining some of the ontogeny that these creatures exhibited some 630,000,000 years ago.
      .
      This proves it....

    • 18.2

53_3, you sure you're not off by say, 100,000,000 years?

    • 18.3

I think I could see giving you 75,000,000 years later, but not 100,000,000.
      .
Clearly, there are Ecdysozoa in the Ediacaran period, and also molluscs, so the last common ancestor predate that.
      .
I think to put the divergance at 530,000,000 years is very unlikely, as advanced Ecdysozoa such as Opabinia and other more traditional Ecdysozoa were already extant by that time. In Ediacaran times, the presence of Spriggina floundersi clearly indicates that it must be sometime before 553,000,000 years.
      .
But, I do have to agree, divergence times are not widely agreed upon as yet. My opinion is that the divergence took place before the Marinoan Glaciation, but that may not necessarily be true.

    • 18.4

      A lot of conjecture pre-snowballs, n'est-ce pas?

    • 18.5

Well, the Snowballs did appear to introduce higher levels of oxygen in the water, and many paleos believe that bursts of evolutionary innovation were aided by oxygenated cold water. The biochemical
      .
Also, molecular clocks generally put the divergence times at around 750,000,000 and 600,000,000 years, though these clocks are pretty crude.

      Look at it this way:

Can you imagine that the likes of Beck, Hannity, Limbaugh, or O'Reilly actually having a childhood?!?!?!
      .
Uh, don't answer that question, sacred.
      .
At least now we know something about the teabaggers' pre-metamorphic ontogeny. What we are still missing is the spore and chrysalis states.
      .
There is ample evidence that some of the earliest insects, including Blattoida (roaches), had teabaggers as precursors.
      .
With Michelle finding the missing link between teabaggers and primitive cnidarian (molluscan?) forbears, she might just win a real Nobel prize!
