Narcissism

Marty Peretz, the editor-in-chief of the New Republic--which contains some excellent reporting by writers who must be embarrassed--has grown increasingly bitter about President Obama. Indeed, the bitterness tracks perfectly with the President's insistence that Israel freeze its settlements.

And now, Peretz has deigned to deliver a diagnosis of the President's mental illness...

So this question arises: If Obama could not get Chicago over the finish line in Copenhagen, which was a test only of his charms, how will he persuade Tehran to give up its nuclear weapons capacity or the Arabs, to whom he has tilted (we are told) only tactically, to sit down without their 60 year-old map as guide to what they demand from Israel.

What I suspect is that the president is probably a clinical narcissist. This is not necessarily a bad condition if one maintains for oneself what the psychiatrists call an "optimal margin of illusion," that is, the margin of hope that allows you to work. But what if his narcissism blinds him to the issues and problems in the world and the inveterate foes of the nation that are not susceptible to his charms?

To which one can only say: On what basis? This fits too neatly into a meme that neoconservatives--more than the right-wing populists--have been rehearsing since the summer of 2008: Obama is a show pony. He's a celebrity. He's the Messiah (according to Norman Podhoretz, in the Wall Street Journal recently). He's The One. This makes it convenient whenever Obama does fail for his opponents to say: AHA! So he's not The Messiah, after all....and any failure, as we've seen, leads to the inevitable--he's collapsing!

All nonsense, of course, as the jury is still very much out. Friday was a dismal day for the President--the jobs numbers, Copenhagen and so forth. And the economy is, I'd guess, a bit more shaky than the recent Wall St. runup may make it seem. But Obama is having a pretty good autumn, after an absent August. The Iran talks went better than expected--and may actually prove a breakthrough, if the Iranians make good on their pledge to send their enriched fuel overseas for processing.  And Obama has gotten closer to passing a unversal health care plan than any President in history, with the likelihood of some sort of success growing daily. (The fact that Dr. Bill Frist, former Republican Senate Majority, told Karen Tumulty that he'd vote for the bill is no small deal.)

There are solid philosophical arguments that can be made against what Obama is doing. There are strong arguments that can be made either way on Afghanistan.  I still think the various health care proposals place too much of a burden on an already strapped private sector. But Peretz--allegedly the impresario of one of our most distinguished journals of liberal thought--is making none of those. He is indulging in standard Likudnik name calling--Israel good, Iran eeeee-vil--and indulging in the neoconservative efforts to create a Straw Messiah.

I don't mind when Peretz, or anyone, goes off the liberal reservation--so long as his argument is carefully reasoned. I've been known to be flagrantly "unreliable" myself...and the Left has been known to be disastrously wrong, from time to time. But at a moment when Israel is intransigent on an important element of Middle Eastern peace--freezing the settlements--and Iran is showing some flexibility in the nuclear talks, Peretz's name-calling and long-distance psychiatry seems the behavior of a brat who isn't getting his way. It would be sad if he weren't so vicious.

    Hi Joe,

Once again, thanks for standing up for simple decency in the face of neocons who not only have driven policies that have wasted trillions of dollars of Americans' money, and thousands of American lives, without shame, apology or reflection, but also have consistently used these slimy, dishonest rhetorical tactics to get their way.

We need this kind of courage in the face of these latter day McCarthys.

I am a bit confused about your statement that you don't mind that Peretz "goes off the liberal reservation." When was he on that reservation, except to buy tax-free booze?

  • 2

"What I suspect is that the president is probably a clinical narcissist. .
Obama adorns the list of narcissists, in the same vein as Sadam Hussein, Hitler, Mussolini, Mao Zedong, Fidel Castro, Genghis Khan, Ruhollah Khomeini and his adopted devotee Ahmadenijad.
    .
You know all those great men who rise to power, like Barack, and then go down in history as the worst of the worst.
    .
All of them, narcissists and very evil people.

  • 3

Joe, of course, misses one very narcissistic part of Obama's Olympic speech:

"Nearly one year ago, on a clear November night, people from every corner of the world gathered in the city of Chicago or in front of their televisions to watch the results of the U.S. Presidential election. Their interest wasn't about me as an individual. Rather, it was rooted in the belief that America's experiment in democracy still speaks to a set of universal aspirations and ideals. Their interest sprung from the hope that in this ever-shrinking world, our diversity could be a source of strength, a cause for celebration; and that with sustained work and determination, we could learn to live and prosper together during the fleeting moment we share on this Earth."
    .
    But why is that surprising?
    .
Hey Joe, remember when Obama yapped about the world beginning to cool and the ocean's rise slowing down simply because he got elected??

    • 3.1

      spob,

"Nearly one year ago, on a clear November night, people from every corner of the world gathered in the city of Chicago or in front of their televisions to watch the results of the U.S. Presidential election. Their interest wasn't about me as an individual. Rather, it was rooted in the belief that America's experiment in democracy still speaks to a set of universal aspirations and ideals. Their interest sprung from the hope that in this ever-shrinking world, our diversity could be a source of strength, a cause for celebration; and that with sustained work and determination, we could learn to live and prosper together during the fleeting moment we share on this Earth."

Please oh, please tell us what the heck is "narcistic" about this part of the speech? It may be that parts of his speech to the IOC was narcistic, but certainly not this portion of his speech.. If anything, this portion about the speech states that the excitement "WAS NOT ABOUT HIM". Are you claiming a "false modesty".

The truth is Obama is very self-aware and self-confident and he is not afraid to present himself as such. Obama is the first politician I have ever heard say, "I will make mistakes in the future" and the only President I have heard when asked about what he wanted people to say about him, said "that Obama, HE DID SOME THINGS I DID NOT CARE FOR, but overall, I think he was on the right track." Since when did you hear such things from Bush II or Clinton, or for that matter, Bush I or Reagan?

    • 3.2

      fhm--you clown yourself
      .
stating that you embodied the hopes and dreams of the world, but just that it wasn't you individually, isn't exactly modesty--it's an exercise in the use of a fig leaf--that it convinced you says a lot about you.

    • 3.3

spob didn't bother to read his own quote, which included the following sentence:

"Their interest wasn't about me as an individual."

This is your evidence, spob? Or did you just quote it from someone else?

Your post is a self-refuting joke. So is your ideology.

    • 3.4

Did you even READ that quote?
      .
"Their interest wasn't about me as an individual."
      .
Just because it has the word "me" in it doesn't mean it's narcissistic. If you speak the English language and have a working brain, you can see that he's saying this is NOT about him.
      .
I'd say that conservatives think and behave like children, but that's an insult to the innocent toddlers of our country.

  • 4

"Friday was a dismal day for the President--the jobs numbers, Copenhagen and so forth. And the economy is, I'd guess, a bit more shaky than the recent Wall St. runup may make it seem."

    .
The first sane and rational statement made by Joe Klein in over a year.
    .
Remember when they said "it's the economy, Stupid!!"

  • 5

"Peretz's name-calling and long-distance psychiatry seems the behavior of a brat who isn't getting his way."
    .
More likely, it's simple projection. Sociopathic Personality Disorder (a mainstay of the neoconservatives) and narcissism go together like "conservatism" and hypocrisy.

    • 5.1

so shepherd, what would you call the "oceans begin to drop" and "world begin to cool" stuff?
      .
And that "november night" thing--full of himself, much?

  • 6

"More likely, it's simple projection. Sociopathic Personality Disorder (a mainstay of the neoconservatives) and narcissism go together like "conservatism" and hypocrisy."

    .
I am sure that most liberals are clearly rooted in the Oedipus Stage that Freud so adeptly named it, which really explains all the problems that liberals face during their rise from obscurity. Now to define Barack Obama.
    .

"In the young male, the Oedipus conflict stems from his natural love for his mother, a love which becomes sexual as his libidal energy transfers from the anal region to his genitals. Unfortunately for the boy, his father stands in the way of this love. The boy therefore feels aggression and envy towards this rival, his father, and also feels fear that the father will strike back at him. As the boy has noticed that women, his mother in particular, have no penises, he is struck by a great fear that his father will remove his penis, too. The anxiety is aggravated by the threats and discipline he incurs when caught masturbating by his parents. This castration anxiety outstrips his desire for his mother, so he represses the desire. Moreover, although the boy sees that though he cannot posses his mother, because his father does, he can posses her vicariously by identifying with his father and becoming as much like him as possible: this identification indoctrinates the boy into his appropriate sexual role in life. A lasting trace of the Oedipal conflict is the superego, the voice of the father within the boy. By thus resolving his incestuous conundrum, the boy passes into the latency period, a period of libidal dormancy."

    .
As we know, Barack lost his mother and father. One can only think that someone like Obama would look for a father and mother figure to emulate.
    .
I think this has transpired most notably by Obama's current track of emulating Jimmy Carter.
    .
Look out Rosalynn!! Barack is looking for a new mommy!!

  • 7

Funny how the idea that Obama is a narcissist is oh-so-awful, but none of the usual suspects can look at the words he's spoken and call them humble.
    .
    Ha. Ha. Ha. Ha.
    .
    Joe, you're on a fool's errand.

    • 7.1

Even funnier was the part where you quoted Obama saying how it wasn't about him.

So, you've already provided the evidence of his humility, but, being a conservative, you're too stupid to know it.

  • 8

"And that "november night" thing--full of himself, much?"

No spoob, that's your narcissism. Your inability to see this country run by anything but a middle-aged or ancient white guy. The guy you see in the mirror is the only thing that matters to you, the only thing you can relate to, the center of your life... you.

Your life or achievements won't be discussed around the world now or ever so why are you inclined to feel superior?

And rusthead, I'm sure you think all the leaders you mention were all elected in a fair democracy. I'll remind you that the evil came from a huge majority of your fellow citizens. Go, find them, end them. I will be watching CNN to see how you do.

Spoob, don't you feel that rusthead drags you down?

    • 8.1

Wow. Interesting reponse. Are you really saying that Obama's "November night" wasn't a paean to himself? Wow.

  • 9

Joe:"I don't mind when Peretz, or anyone, goes off the liberal reservation" Is that French for telling the truth?

George Will summed it up precisely yesterday. His feelings were confirmed by members of the Olympic Committee who stated Obama was ill-prepared and arrogant in his approach to the committees. It seems that President Bambi didn't send tingles up th elegs of the Committee members.

"The President and First Lady went to Copenhagen and gave little speeches about themselves. She, Mrs. Obama, used the first-person singular pronoun in some form or another, "I" or "me", sixteen, 34 times in sixteen paragraphs. He used it 23 times in thirteen paragraphs. It was all about them, and the danger is an adjective sooner or later attaches to presidents. Honest Abe, Tricky Dick Nixon. All kinds of adjectives. The danger to the President is that Vain is going to attach to him."

It is a shame that the big inconvenience for MIchelle Obama turned out t be wasted. The nerve fo the common folk to disturb her important days.

The dictionary next to Narcissist will have both of their pictures and you are making a strong case for yours to appear next to clueless!

    • 9.1

Obama also used the word "we" 26 times, "us" six times, and "our" 12 times.

If you weren't too stupid to count, you wouldn't be a Republican.

  • 10

To paraphrase Barney Frank, having a conversation about human psychology with "conservatives" (or "libertarians" for that matter) is like having a conversation with a dining room table.

  • 11

Mr Klein doean't seem to remember the instances when he used the technique of long distance diagnosis in the past. Mr Klein, like the maven from NR doesn't have the clinical credentials in the healing arts that would allow an ad hoc practitioner to make a diagnosis of anyone even after an extensive exam & review of his patients clinical records. Since I'm not a certified health care clinician, I'll make a Stupid, Wildly, Absurd, Guess & say that journalists sometimes possessed with delusions of adequacy, make SWAG's to support a diagnosis of narcisistic behavior, chronic hubris, etc when they write of someone.
Since I retired in 1987, I ignore those who favor us with SWAG's. I got paid to listen to people who used SWAG's & were confined to a treatment facility. I did it 8 hours a day, 5 days a week. I shared the behavior that I'd seen with a mental health practitioner. He/she made the diagnosis & set up the treatment plan. At times a treatment plan would be successful.
Have fun with your games, practitioners of skills used in the news business.
FWIW, LOL. Joe didn't descend into Timespeak. Good for Joe.

  • 12

"world beginning to cool and the ocean's rise slowing down simply because he got elected"
    .
Of course, a poetic flourish they didn't understand must be proof of Obama's narcissism. For those of you who also failed English on a regular basis -- what he was saying is that the election on that day marked a return to a Democratic agenda, which unlike the GOP, is based on science, doesn't think global warming is the daily heat index part of the weather report and will finally engage in the greatest challenge facing our nation and our planet. Spob and Rusty and their ilk are expected to be ridiculous, They resent his innate intelligence, his educational attainment and a communication skill set that illustrates even more glaringly the dearth of talent on the right.
    .
And perhaps even more importantly, they as well as the neocons you are writing about Joe have at their core a resentment derived from his failure to adhere to long standing traditions. Obama just doesn't know his place and refuses to stick to the designated stereotype. The One, the messiah, celebrity -- sorry Joe but that's not about show pony or all flash and no substance. If their objections were based on something like "he is nothing more than image" say like Reagan before they revised history and couldn't do anything but deliver his lines then it would be fitting. But this is clearly not the case. So this meme is simply the latest frame work for an old nemesis -- it's just another manifestation of the tired old "uppity Negro."
    .
For goodness sakes, where are the questions for these neocons. They act like they are the only legitimate leaders of this nation, yet every time they are in power they leave a complete and utter mess in their wake. All this talk this week about how long Obama knew that Iran had this secret site and he still dallied. Well they also said America has known about this site since 2007 and I have not heard one member of the media push back on the right's assault. I've long since stopped holding my breath waiting for the village to hold them accountable -- that would be too much like doing the right thing. But don't you think you could at least ask them about their plan and how is it different than the last ten times they tried it?
    .
Neocons are remarkably consistent and have been touting the same philosophical positions since the begining of time. It would be one thing if they were attempting to run from their past mistakes, but it's like we're all suffering from hysterical amnesia. Perhaps if the media acted more like Shelby in the movie "Memento," and used a system of Polaroids and the written word to make up for the loss of short-term memory functions or in our case long-term, we'd have a chance. Of course instead of being reminded that our wives were raped and murdered we'll be reminded that they neocons broke our country. They have raped and pillaged our hopes and dreams and we are all suffering brain-damage after being beaten down by the perpetrators. Of course I don't expect our pundits and reporters to tattoo their bodies in order to keep track of the most relevant information such as: your country has been raped and the rapists are still around. But you think they could at least keep that Polaroid on the fridge and write on the back what needs to be done about it so when the neocons start spewing the same old lines someone will remember we've seen this movie before,
    .
I mean really, how many times are we going to let them do the same thing and expect a different result, psychiatry has a definition for that too and it isn't narcissism -- they call it just plain crazy!

    • 12.1

      I don't resent Obama's intelligence. I don't think he's nearly as bright as advertised.
      .
And Dee, if you think that rhetorical flourishes and narcissim are mutually exclusive, I have a bridge to sell you.

    • 12.2

"I don't think he's nearly as bright as advertised."
      .
Yes, well, that's the trouble, isn't it? After nearly destroying the civilized world by foisting George W. Bush on it, "conservative" judgment about intelligence and narcissism - and just about anything else - isn't worth the time it takes to ignore.

    • 12.3

      Dee

Once again you, as liberals tend to do, confuse arrogance for intelligence.

And rhetorical flourishes are thinly veiled delusions of grandeur

    • 12.4

"Once again you, as liberals tend to do, confuse arrogance for intelligence."
      .
Hahahahahahahaha! Perfect. If George W. Bush isn't the perfect embodiment of pure arrogance in the absence of intelligent, no one is. And "conservatives" voted for him in droves, twice! The name of this post needs to be changed to "Projection".

    • 12.8

      nathan7777

No I did not try to pass Bush off as a conservative intellect. I was merely pointing out that there is a long list of liberals that have been passed off as intellectuals (usually by other liberals) instead of arrogant gas bags.

The fantasy land is all yours

    • 12.9

Of course, freeinpa is right - when are conservatives ever wrong? - when he points out how dumb the Democrats are.

"Obama, Clinton, Kerry, Edwards, Franken - Arrogance in the absence of intelligence thy name is a liberal." - as he says.

How could these mental midgets compete with all those Einsteins the Republicans routinely put forward? You know - Ford, Reagan, Quayle, Bush II, Palin.....

  • 13

I like Israel, too, but Peretz's Holylanditis & his own narcissism are the reasons I don't read TNR; yes, TNR has some great reporters, but I'm not smart enough to tell when the comments are reasoned & when they're Martynized, so I stay away. If Peretz loves his mag, he should quit & leave it alone. It's tainted goods as long as Peretz runs the show, akin to having Joe Lieberman as Senate Majority Leader.

    The Constant Weader at http://www.RealityChex.com

  • 14

Marty Peretz calling anyone a "narcissist" is pretty funny.
Reminded me of this fantastic article about him by Eric Alterman: http://is.gd/3YYF8

  • 15

In all fairness, it should be recalled that the "Obama is a show pony..celebrity..fake Messiah" meme didn't originate with the neocons. It started with Hillary Clinton and her backers (remember her 'the heavens will open...light will shine down' speech? That was only the most extravagant example). And for the same reason..she and her supporters then, like the neocons now, couldn't believe that their God-given entitlement to power was being taken away by this upstart from nowhere.

At least Hillary has adjusted to the reality of things. The neocons have not.

  • 16

Wow, trollfest. I find it funny to watch Spob and Rusty and free in PA go on and on about how much Obama loves the sound of his own voice. And on and on and on and on and on....

When did "projection" become the core tenet of how conservatives view the world?

    • 16.1

Dee goes on for chapters saying nothing and I respond with one or two lines and its going on an don and on. Liberals really have a difficult time with reality. Explains why there ideas go down in flames.

Unless you are capable of closing an Olympic game submission, you cannot negotiate nuclear agreements, nor discuss geography with Arabs?

Dr. Peretz is doing some fancy analogical reasoning there. Not sure the premises are valid, but interesting reasoning, none the less. I never would have put winning Olympic sales experience, at the head of the list of qualifications necessary for succeeding at nuclear disarmaments talks.

Not anxious but curious as to why with a failing economy, rising unemployment, a bungled porkulus package, record setting deficits, a corrupt Democratic Congress, ACORN indictments, NEA promoting political agenda, wing-nut czars and a failed Olympic bid why is the only discussions on this faux-intellectual site dealing with the big question like whether Ahmadinejad is Jewish, What Happens in Nevada stays in Nevada, or the International Free-Market Bible.

The last paragraph of this article offers an incisive and stellar summary of the entire piece. I could not agree more- especially with the portion I have pasted above.

Peretz obviously does not agree with the Obama perspective on a number of issues about Israel but the use of invective and the back bench petty diagnosis of mental illness just make his writing seem plain churlish and even silly. With every name calling fit he throws on this matter he loses more credibility.

I just hope he remembers that he is an Editor (journalist) not a tantrum throwing drone.

When one was elected to the pinnacle of power on the ticket of change, one would be hailed immediately as the Hero of Change. As soon as the hero is seen as non-performing after eight months, he would have been deemed narcissistic, a victim of psychological illusion.

This is a real sad world, and verily rather a sadistic one at that.

  • 23

[...] Klein handles this quite nicely, and correctly notes the cause of this- Obama standing firm on Israeli [...]

  • 24

Atrios is right about this "narcissism" term, talking about George Will echoing his buddy Peretz today in the WAPO on the narcissism charge (did they have a "dress up like Edmund Burke" playdate over the weekend?):

    "Narcissism" is code for "uppity."

  • 25

The word 'narcissist' is not code for anything. It is a straightforward psychiatric/psychological term for a recognized personality disorder that severely impacts those who don't insulate themselves from its effects.

Regardless of whether Barack Obama truly qualifies for an official diagnosis of being a narcissist he does demonstrate that he is a fool. Pure and simple.

Now, having lived in communities not as 'lilly-white' as it appears most of the commentors here seem to have done based on their flippant and ignorant remarks, I can say yes, Obama is "uppity" and you fools need to learn the differences between a person -- of any race or class -- who is "uppity" compared to a person who is sincere and honest. As long as I'm using labels and diagnostic terms here I'll give you one more that people who have lived in the south side of Chicago or similar cities such as Detroit, Newark and Philadelpia will understand. Obama is shucking and jiving you fools. He knows it and that's one reason he smiles so much; he's got you right where he wants you and you're too short on street-smarts to have a clue.
