Newt Gingrich Adds Hispanic News/Opinion Website-The Americano

Add another feather in the veritable bird's nest that is Gingrich Inc. The former Speaker of the House, and all-around conservative idea-smith, has launched a news website for Hispanic Americans, the rapidly growing segment of swing voters. It's called The Americano, and it is the bilingual brainchild of Sylvia Garcia, a longtime employee of Gingrich Communications, the former speaker's consulting business. "The idea came during the election," Garcia says. "There really isn't any media that is covering conservative values for Hispanics. Everything you see is very one-sided."

And so, conservative-minded Hispanics will find an opinion piece about how voter identification efforts are damaging the GOP brand among Latinos, a "History of U.S. Elections as Seen By Hispanics," and a piece about how the embattled non-profit ACORN was caught in a sting that involved a false claim about 14 El Salvadoran prostitutes.

The new website, which will seek to make a profit from advertising, comes at a time when Republican strategists, and conservative activists, are expressing clear concern over Republican popularity among the Latino electorate, a swing vote in recent presidential contests. As former Sen. Mel Martinez, R-Fla., put it late last year on Meet the Press:

The fact of the matter is that Hispanics are going to be a more and more vibrant part of the electorate, and the Republican Party had better figure out how to talk to them. We had a very dramatic shift between what President Bush was able to do with Hispanic voters, where he won 44 percent of them, and what happened to Senator McCain.

Garcia, who previously set up Gingrich's own Spanish-language website (www.newt.org/paralatinos), said that she hopes to attract readers who are looking for conservative views on issues beyond the illegal immigration debate, which tends to alienate Hispanics from the Republican party. "In recent polls, when Hispanics and Latinos have been asked what is most important to them, immigration comes in fourth or fifth," Garcia said. She added that Newt's opinion pieces would be published on the site, but that he would not play a major visible role. "It's not about Newt. It's not about the speaker. It's really a site about conservatism."

As such, the site will face some stiff competition from other politically-motivated websites seeking to shape public opinion among American Hispanics. America's Voice, a pro-immigration reform non-profit pushing hard to brand the GOP as a party of immigrant-bashers, has stepped up its communications efforts in recent months. The headline of a press release the group sent out today targeted the House Minority Leader John Boehner with this headline: "Boehner to Immigrants: Work and Go Home; Obama to Immigrants: We Can Get it Done."

This sounds like a plan by Gingrich to hire a sexy young Latino secretary and cheat on his wife with her.

    The Americano by The Gringo.

      ...by El Mentiroso, you mean...

Braindead comments like that and the others illustrate how Gingrich is on the wrong track. A Hispanic site encourages Hispanics to think of themselves as Hispanics first, Americans second. That plays right into the hands of the far-left and the Dems. What Gingrich would do if he weren't corrupt or stupid is to undercut attempts at Balkanization, such as by working against racial power groups like the National Council of La Raza.
      .
Maybe [laughs] Scherer could [laughs] ask him [laughs] about that [laughs].

So now Gingrich can directly give Hispanic audiences the Republican message about scooping up illegal immigrants and dumping them into trucks ala “Soylent Green”, then dumping them back over the Border Fence[tm]? Will he broadcast Lou Dobbs in Spanish too? Yep, he'll lock up the Hispanic vote for the next twenty years.

Ha. I'm sure they can alienate Hispanics on a wide range of issues besides just immigration. How poor Hispanics caused the banking crisis. How Hispanic community organizers are prostitution-enabling communists. How Hispanic lifestyles drive up health care costs and insurance premiums.

Look out Democrats if these conservative views get translated into Spanish!

Jesus, this is just pointless, what the site will do is slowly go down the drain of social conservative points, because conservatives realize that is the only arena they have a chance to provoke Latino interest. In all other aspects, economy, immigration, education, etc....Latinos will continue to turn away from the GOP in droves. McCain will be hanging onto Arizona for dear life, any GOPers in the southwest and east - burgeoning Latino populations in Georgia, S. and N Carolina had better watch their backs when it comes to Latino voters.

Oh hey MS, surprised you're not writing about this

    Just your cup of tea...bag.

"Latinos consider the economy the most important issue, followed by education, healthcare and national security."
    http://articles.latimes.com/2009/jan/16/nation/na-latinos16

I don't know which recent polls Garcia is referring to, and I feel comfortable assuming that MS didn't ask, but the most recent I could find on Google was from January.

Of the above how many issues break towards republicans?

"America's Voice, a pro-immigration reform non-profit pushing hard to brand the GOP as a party of immigrant-bashers"

Not nearly as hard as the GOP.

Why is Scherer shilling for a website that is so non-credible that it still asserts that a woman associated with ACORN killed her husband.
    _
Seriously, Michael, anyone who reported that story originally showed their incompetence as journalists. but far worse is anyone WHO HAS NOT CORRECTED/RETRACTED that story after initially reporting it.
    _
And those who promote sites that practice this kind of irresponsibility are just as bad -- YOU are helping to spread malicious lies by promoting this site, Michael.

    • 7.1

LAY OFF. There's nothing inherently wrong about stating that Eye of Newt is starting an Hispanic web site. I don't equate that to "shilling."

      Am I missing something?

    • 7.2

yeah... you're missing the fact that Scherer is promoting the site by linking to it and treating it as credible. That, in my book, constitutes "shilling" -- especially when by doing so, Scherer scores points with Gingrich....

    • 7.3

      plukasiak,

I wouldn't worry too much about it. Newt's site promises to be as transparently shallow as the man, himself.

I don't think Hispanics will be flocking to Newt's site to see his prescriptions for what ails them.

    • 7.4

From the perspective that Newt is pretty useless to the public discourse so why attempt to legitimize him, point made. But I do think that, even though I agree with nothing the man says, we have a right to see what he does. I don't think that'd make MS any more or less of a forerunner of Newt's ideology.

I can't stop laughing. I need air. hahahahahahaha
After I saw your comment I went on the site to watch the video. Are you actually saying the woman did not say she killed her husband? You make it seem as though Newt's site created the video and forced her to mention killing her husband. It comes out of her mouth. No one asked her anything about her husband, she brought him up and her illegal activities into the conversation. The site didn't assert she killed her husband SHE DID! Too funny, thanks for the laugh Muah!

    The comedy never stops...

Conservatives should just completely forget about illegal immigration and border control for pandering purposes.
    .
Just kidding, that would be petty and disingenuous.

Let me get this straight, it's a Hispanic site? So viewed only by Hispanic eyes, and written only by Hispanic writers? LOL the drama you create. Get over yourself and the soap opera in your head. One wesbite is not going to make Hispanics forget or think they're not Americans. I have never seen a country where different cultures are viewed upon so negatively. You need a reality check. I applaud Mr. Gingrich for not allowing people like you to try and keep him from communicating with Americans who have different interests and cultures. Many groups of Americans have different ways of connecting so what's the big deal? You are very small-minded. Laughable!

"We should replace bilingual education with immersion in English so people learn the common language of the country and they learn the language of prosperity, not the language of living in a ghetto."
    .
And which GOP politician came up with that interesting description of Spanish - as recently as 2007? Why it was old Mr Values Gingrich himself. So you'll pardon me if I have trouble taking seriously this latest attempt to rebrand a serial adulterer, race-baiter and thoroughly unreliable piece of white trailer trash as a serious political figure. Tell me, Scherer, you didn't think that this might have been worth mentioning - or were you simply going on the ignorance is bliss principle?

  • 13

So will Gingrich explain, on his new site, how the first Latina on the SCOTUS is a lazy, stupid racist who has only gotten this far because of affirmative action?
    .
Because that'll really win the Hispanics over.

    • 13.1

      Cliff;

I am a Hispanic, Puerto Rican, thus, an American citizen by birth, who is offended by your remarks regarding Justice Sonia Sotomayor. Instead of categorizing her in such blanketed and bigoted terms, take the time to read her biography. Her tenacity, hard work, discipline, and intelligence took her to where she is today.

If affirmative action had anything to do with getting her a job, it was up to her to advance, because from then on, she was on her own.

For the record, I have never been in favor of affirmative action. I think a person should be hired based on merits alone and not to fill a quota, or to be the "token" Hispanic, Black, Asian,....etc. But, if this is the only way minorities are going to be assured of being hired fairly, so be it.

I guess if you, Cliff, are not part of a minority, it is hard for you to understand.

Back in 1995, then-House Speaker Newt Gingrich said that "allowing bilingualism to continue to grow is very dangerous." This, added to the 2007 quote referred to by junius, is just a sample of the man's true state of mind.

Mr. Gingrich and Ms Garcia's pandering to Hispanics through their website, with the sole intention of securing voters is hypocritical and disgusting.
