President Obama Runs The Sunday Show Table (Sans Fox)
CNN's John King summed up the situation pretty succinctly just before 11 a.m. "He's not just done us. He's done other people as well." The "he" in question was the President of the United States, and the people he was doing were the hosts of five Sunday shows, on NBC, ABC, CBS, CNN and Univision. The full market blitz by the White House was a crafty move, even if it led to much repetition, because the very fact of him doing so much became a news story, further amplifying his message. Running the Sunday table also gives Obama a domestic anchor at the start of a week when he will be traveling to New York and Pittsburgh to meet with foreign leaders, and will therefore be unable to engage much in the domestic political squabble.
Fox News, with whom the White House is none too happy, was the only major outlet to get stiffed by Obama. Sunday show host Chris Wallace embraced the show of disrespect. "Today, the president is talking and talking. But we have a 'FOX News Sunday' exclusive, the only place you won't see Barack Obama making yet another pitch for health care." That's a whole new standard for newsmaking: Boasting about the information you cannot get. This is a bit like the New York Times leading with an "exclusive" story about how it has nothing new to report about something. But Fox does deserve some credit for the conceit. It is not a network lacking in boldness.
So what became of all the "doing" that Obama was doing to the other networks? Here are some quick summaries of Obama's ABC, CNN, CBS, NBC and Univision appearances:
On ABC, Obama went after the media for its role in amplifying his more extreme critics: "And -- and sometimes I think that, frankly, the media encourages some of the outliers in behavior, because, let's face it, the easiest way to get on television right now is to be really rude." He declined to comment on whether or not to ACORN, a nonprofit that was recently caught giving advice to an imposter pimp and prostitute, should be funded: "You know, it's -- frankly, it's not really something I've followed closely. I didn't even know that ACORN was getting a whole lot of federal money." On Afghanistan, Obama called himself a skeptic and said the strategy had still not been worked out. "You don't make decisions about resources before you have the strategy ready." Obama also rejected the notion that a penalty for individuals who do not get health insurance, which the health reform plans contain, amounts to a tax increase.
On CNN, Obama said that the new tax on so-called "Cadillac" insurance plans was also not a tax on the middle class, even though some members of the middle class could be affected. Asked if Hamid Karzai had "stolen" the elections in Afghanistan, as is increasingly evident, Obama said he did not know. "How much fraud took place and whether that had a substantial effect on the results of the election, I think that is something that we're going to have to wait and see in the next few weeks," he said. Obama defended the ongoing investigation of CIA officials who may have violated interrogation guidance during the Bush Administration: "I don't want to start getting into the business of squelching, you know, investigations that are being conducted." As for all the anger directed at him, Obama said, "You know, yelling at politicians is as American as apple pie." Then he did some media bashing, after prefacing his comments by saying he was not media bashing. "You know, and the other thing I've got to say is, is that I think it's important for the media -- you know, not to do any media-bashing here -- to recognize that right now, in this 24-hour news cycle, the easiest way to get on CNN or FOX or any of the other stations -- MSNBC -- is to just say something rude and outrageous."
On CBS, Obama again adopted the Mr. Smith comes to Washington pose, talking tough about insurance companies even as he pushes a plan that will, by most estimates, be a boon for insurance companies. "Look, bringing about change in this town is always hard. When you've got special interests that are making billions of dollars, absolutely, they're going to want to keep as much of the profits that they're making as possible." Asked about the tone of the debate, Obama blamed the media again: "They can't get enough of conflict. It's catnip to the media right now. And so, the easiest way to get 15 minutes of fame is to be rude to somebody." Then Obama called Russia paranoid about missile defense. "Russia had always been paranoid about this. But George Bush was right. This wasn't a threat to them. And this new program will not be a threat to them."
On NBC, Obama was asked who he is saying no to in the health care debate. And he didn't really have an answer. "The people who are most involved in the health care system know that it's gotta be reformed," he said. Asked about race and the tone of the debate, Obama repeated himself, again. "I think that— the media loves to have a conversation about race. I mean, the— this is— is catnip to— to— the media because it is a running thread in American history that's very powerful. And it invokes some very strong emotions." The president continued to voice discomfort with the situation in Afghanistan. "I don't have a deadline for withdrawal. But I'm certainly not somebody who believes in indefinite occupations of other countries." Obama was more optimistic when he was asked about the White Sox, his favorite baseball team, which is not doing so well. "Until they are eliminated, I will make no predictions."
On Univision, Obama was asked about his pledge to ban illegal immigrants from health care reform benefits. According to the translated transcript of the exchange, Obama said, "En estos momentos el plan que hemos presentado y quiero ser absolutamente claro: No debe de incluir trabajadores indocumentados." (Illegal workers won't get benefits.) He added that this group could continue to buy coverage on the private market, but not through the exchanges, and not with subsidies. When asked about the problem of the millions of illegal immigrants in the U.S. without health insurance, Obama said he wanted to tackle the issue of illegal immigration separately. "Bueno, a mi me gustaría mucho resolver nuestro problema de inmigración y no puedo resolver todos los problemas de golpe. . . No estoy hablando de los indocumentados ahora." (He wants to solve the problem of illegal immigration, but can't do everything at once. And he is not talking about illegal immigrants now.)

3. And, here's what Michael Scherer will never, ever tell you about Univision's interviewer. I'm sure Obama felt right at home.-

Obama skipped Fox because all of his interviews were with news outlets and clearly the reality challenged, fact free zone of fox entertainment channel doesn't qualify even if it does tell you what you want to hear

Hmm, you suppose he might be right about the media. After all didn't Amy just interject race into a NYT political story in order to increase the comments to her post? Doesn't the polling prove that while so much attention is paid to the angry American people, these tea baggers actually represent a very small portion of Americans who didn't vote for Democrats in the first place? Shouldn't the media be held responsible for promoting and creating news when you're supposed to be just covering news? Why is it okay for CNN to take on Fox and call them out for lying about CNN, but the president should sit back and take it?
-
3
No Dem should EVER go on Fox. It's not a news channel, they make up quotes, they misleadingly splice tape, and going on there just legitimizes their nonsense. Chris Wallace is a do*che.
-
4
Let's roll the videotape to see how Michael Scherer, TIME's conservative affirmative action hire, twists the news here with artful phrasing. I'll even spot him the first paragraph, which seems, to quote Douglas Adams, "Mostly Harmless." #6 is the worst of the offenses.
(1) "Fox does deserve some credit for the conceit. It is not a network lacking in boldness." Sounds like "Jeffrey Dahmer does deserve some credit for the devising his plan. He was not a mass murderer lacking in boldness."
(2) I haven't been following the ACORN brouhaha that closely either, aside from noting that it gave Jon Stewart a chance to achieve some fairness and balance last week on The Daily Show, because at worst it looks like we're looking at a proverbial "a few bad apples situation" that, arrayed against the good ACORN does (which an actual reporter might consider documenting) is pretty weak tea. But if the ACORN people in question realized that this was a low-grade put-on and played along, as has been alleged, then it seems questionable as to whether they were actually "caught giving advice" to said imposters.
(3) Whether Karzai wins the Afghan election through fraud is indeed something that depends on "how much fraud took place and whether that had a substantial effect on the results of the election," about which "we're going to have to wait and see in the next few weeks." So Obama is not saying "I don't know" to what Scherer says "is increasingly evident" with a shrug, but doing his job and not making allegations at this stage that he can't back up. Adding that he says he "doesn't know" to the subsequent reasonable statement adds negative value.
(4) His answer on Cadillac insurance policies and the middle class: well, it isn't a tax on the middle class per se, so perhaps the problem was that it was a badly phrased question. ("Won't this raise the amount that some middle class families have to pay?" would have boxed him in.
(5) Scherer now shifts into a higher gear, characterizing as "media bashing" the statement "the easiest way to get on CNN or FOX [&c.] is to just say something rude and outrageous." It is notable that Obama is wrong here; the actual easiest way to get on is to be a right-of-center pol or pundit in the right Rolodex, but for people who aren't so blessed what he says is pretty hard to dispute. Does it constitute "media-bashing." Bashing, say that the cable nets like sensationalism? I must fan myself.
(6) And Scherer's greenies kick in (h/t Jim Bouton) as he states -- as news -- that Obama "adopted the Mr. Smith comes to Washington pose" by "talking tough about insurance companies even as he pushes a plan that will, by most estimates, be a boon for insurance companies." Where to begin with this tripe?
(a) Is this a "pose," or is Obama actually sort of a crusading do-gooder within his ability to do so?
(b) Even if so, how is the latter part of the sentence presented above even remotely relevant to the "Mr. Smith" character portrayed by Jimmy Stewart? Was Senator Smith someone who would claim to be making life tough for the bad guys while actually making it easier on them?
(c) What plan is Scherer talking about? The criticism is surely true of the Baucus plan, but that is not what Obama is proposing. If the plan contains a public option, then it is not something that health insurers consider a boon -- and Obama clearly would like, and is promoting, even if he is not confident that he can get, a public option. Love the "by most estimates" weasel language there, too!
Do you get the feeling that when TIME gets flak from conservatives about someone like Karen Tumulty simply presenting the facts about some issue, said facts being uncomfortable for the powers that be, they immediately trot out writings by Michael Scherer and say "but look at the work that our boy here does?" Scherer should put a disclaimer on his posts to the effect that "the writer is not actually a competent journalist but has obtained his position through ideological affirmative action."
And a good Sunday to you all.

Michael Scherer: "This is a bit like the New York Times leading with an 'exclusive' story about how it has nothing new to report about something."
Wow. Scherer is probably so clueless that he doesn't know that the first time that the execrable leftist political advocacy group New York Times-Democrat mentioned that a communist, whack job 9/11 Truther conspiracy theorist named Van Jones existed in the Obama adminstration was not until AFTER he resigned. I'm not certain, but I'll bet the New York Times-Democrat also hasn't mentioned that 61% of Democrat party followers are whack job 9/11 Truther conspiracy theorists. http://www.rasmussenreports.com/public_content/politics/current_events/bush_administration/22_believe_bush_knew_about_9_11_attacks_in_advance
BTW, does Scherer know that John Edwards has a ho on the side who gave birth to his fifth child?

You are not really looking to focus on politicians with extra marital affairs are you? At least we don't keep them around,on the other hands last time I checked you still have Vite who was literally with a ho, and Sanford, Pickering, and Ensign, whose mommy paid off his (well we have no proof she was a ho, we only know she was a working girl -- but she and apparently her entire family worked for him so that doesn't really count).

I wonder what our autobiographical textee will name the child when she and Edwards finally marry?

Question for all you Educated Time readers out there. How is Obama going to provide free health insurance for all and still keep the quality of health care we currently have? Eventually it's going to coast to much to become a doctor, would schools have no choice but to dumb down the education they receive? Will we be able to continue to use the latest medical care?
Now this is coming from a broke person who would LOVE free health care, but if it means over crowded hospitals and medical technology like Canada's (No offense to Canada) then I'm not in.
-
6.1
Health care is not free in Canada. It is paid by taxes and the taxes you pay areset according to your revenues. As for the waiting list and technology, i'm glad you excused yourself. We have waiting list for elective surgery and we have the same technology that is available in the USA.
Sorry if there are English mistakes, I usually speak French.

No not "grumpy" lizzie, just very concerned about groups such as ACORN who seem to be taking tax payer funds, are using their status as a "for profit" company so that they can avoid further scrutiny and still be able to play politics with our tax payer funds.
.
While you were watching I am sure Obama on the other networks, Fox News had the CEO of ACORN. She was unable to answer any tough questions about ACORN and its practices, and stayed on a pre-prepared statement that she "is looking into this", at the same time refusing to allow an independent accounting of her company.
.
Believe me, Obama IS watching how this unfolds very closely, as I believe he is connected very well with ACORN and its vast array of entities, 100's of them, which fall under the ACORN umbrella. -
7.3
A-h-h-H-O-O-O! Rusty, m'main man! You finally know what it meant to us who kept going on about Cheney and Halliburton! Congrats. YOU ARE ONE OF US, DUDE! Now if you sign a petition for Cheney's prosecution, I'll sign a petition for Obama's prosecution. What do you say, bud? ...do I hear crickets?

.
Rusty-I think you meant "not for profit?"
.
And I hope you would agree that any organization should be investigated when they are accused of wrong doing and receiving tax payer funds. -
7.6
Actually gunny, I respectfully disagree. ACORN IS a FOR-PROFIT organization. That is why they can also delve into politics, endorsing Democrats such as Obama.
.
They DO pay taxes on some of their various enterprises. This way they can also escape from the Not-for-profit status of 503- c's such as your church may have their status with the IRS.
.
503c's and self quoted Non-profits are two entirely different types of companies. A company can claim in advertising as being "Non-profit", but in actuallity do. They simply claim that all of their profits are expensed out. This is the status of ACORN. They are not filed with the IRS as any 503 status (which there are many).

In the past not too many Americans and legal residents were aware of the happenings in Congress. Today instant contact is a way of life for anybody who has access to a computer. In 1986 other than the paper media, tv and radio gave any evidence of the Immigration Reform package and that was surely limited? The US population was isolated from the truth that was to befall them, after the Simpson/Mazzoli bill passed because the politicians hid the truth? 2 million guest workers were to be given citizenship, but the process became full of corruption and 5.3 million was eventually approved for blanket AMNESTY. Expeditiously the guest workers moved away from agriculture and joined the mainstream of workers.
The people who picked the fruit and vegetables in the farms vanished, so that meant more floods of illegal workers to take the empty places. Today Obama wants to pass another miserable immigration reform bill, even though the main author Edward Kennedy insisted there would never be another path to citizenship. Millions of honest voter don't believe the rhetoric or lies that spill from the politicians anymore. Again behind closed drapes they have been having a secret summit, with little or no participation of the press or pro-sovereignty groups. When lawmakers declare no more Immigration reform than they better stick to their words. Both parties contain corrupt legislators who care nothing for the working man/women and are ready to present in the House and Senate a new immigration reform bill.
287 G, was a lifeline to train local police authorities to arrest and question people, but that may have seen the end of days. The no-match letter may also have been sold out, as well as ICE raids to pander to extremist groups such as La Raza. A recently released report by the Labor Department's Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that 42 states lost jobs last month with Indiana alone losing 9,500 jobs! With 15 million Americans out of work and most states continuing to lose jobs on a monthly basis, it is completely obscene that the United States hands out about 100,000 green cards each month!
President Obama is holding the reins, this time and already confusing the American people over health care. Joe Wilson was right to some degree about no mechanism in the health care package to identify illegal aliens. After the fact and bombarded by livid Americans they added amendments that would cut off all access. That why our legislators need to amplify the verification procedures, to remove foreign nationals from cheating the system.
I trust neither Sen. Harry Reid, House speaker Pelosi and all those who fumble along behind the major conspirators. Harry Reid's Nevada has hospitals in dire need of funds, because of the massive illegal alien population there. The same with California that's having release 20.000 prison inmates, because they were on the edge of bankruptcy, owing to degenerate assembly in Sacramento who allowed unfettered benefits to millions of illegal immigrant families feeding out of the waning state money trough. The businesses that draw them here, pay nothing to their living conditions. Those expenses are left to the taxpayers. Call your Senator or Representative at 202-224-3121 and demand no more Immigration Reform. If you want real facts find out about the corruption and other sinister issues at NUMBERSUSA & JUDICIAL WATCH. Only your irate voices another AMNESTY travesty and stop millions more arriving illegally in America?

Love to hear all the faux intellectuals liberals whine about the unfairness of Fox. Sucks having one network that does not defend and backfill for every corrupt liberal organization. Cry me a river.
The President went on and fielded softballs from a bought and paid for media. He danced around (without directly answering) tort reform. He outrighted lied that he has not paid any attention to ACORN. Its the organization that he worked and who helped elect him. Talk about Fox making up the facts.
FOX challenges liberal crap that Cup Cake Katie, Chris Tingles and Charles Chuckles will never do.
Or the genius here who mocked FOX for talking about Obama without interviewing him. Is that any more bizarre than the CBS, ABC, NBC, MSNBC, CNN NYT LAT et al talking about conservatives. They have not a clue other than the traditional derogatory stuff (oh by the way mostly made up) that appears at the intellectual pulpits like this blog.
Cry, whine and whimper. Its what liberals do best. Obma's popularity here and overseas is on a downward skid .
And just as I have said here for weeks, George Will said out loud today: Racism is the liberals McCarthyism! And you and the old reliable media can't put that genie back in the bottle.
I can almost here you stamping your feet and holding your breath.

I don't understand why the issue of HEALTH CARE has become a fight between CONSERVATIVES and LIBERALS. If somebody becomes seriously ill, INSURANCE COMPANIES won't care if that person is conservative or liberal, they will try to DENY COVERAGE no matter what. The hardships of our ECONOMY affect the same conservatives and liberals. Every body knows that the cost of health care has doubled in the last 10 years, and is rising almost EXPONENTIALLY. How long are we going to wait to fix this problem? We have been waiting for 40 years. Do we think insurance companies are going to fix it? Most of the WASTE of money that is breaking our economy is actually the EXCESSIVE PROFIT that they are making. Every year 45,000 Americans, conservatives and liberals, DIE for lack of healthcare access. Insurance companies are the real DEATH PANELS that, making profit and denying health coverage, bring every day DEATH and BANKRUPTCY to our country. The only way we can save our economy is reducing the profit of those insurance companies. And the government is the ONLY one that can do that. Who else can? More COMPETITION and more CHOICE for the American people is the only solution. A modest PUBLIC OPTION similar to MEDICARE, which has a 94% CONSUMER APPROVAL, can make that happen. We need to STOP fighting between us and MAKE THAT HAPPEN. Insurance companies are spending every single day MILLIONS buying politicians, conservatives and liberals, to KILL the reform and PROTECT their profit. But if insurance companies win, we the American people, conservatives and liberals, LOOSE. So please people, try to be constructive, try to bring positive ideas to de table, and try to fix the imperfections of the reform, not to kill it. Do it for the PROSPERITY of AMERICA, do it for our CHILDREN, both conservatives and liberals.
-
12.1
"More COMPETITION and more CHOICE for the American people is the only solution. A modest PUBLIC OPTION similar to MEDICARE, which has a 94% CONSUMER APPROVAL, can make that happen
If life were only that simple. As seen from the proposed bills floating around, a modest public plan becomes an oxymoron. Taxes, penalties, IRS reporting all become an ingrained fact of life. Medicare may have a good approval rating but it is also careening to bankruptcy, not exactly a glowing endorsement for a government run plan.
The so-called excessive profits of insurance companies is a pure fabrication. At best they earn mediocre profits and are exceeded by many industries including software companies among others. Never is their a mention of the excessive profits that tort lawyers make from medical suits. And yet they get nary a mention in the reform talk.
And I am sorry but whenever someone invokes "do it for our CHILDREN, " it is time to hold onto your watch and wallet. The spending will do more to cripple our children then any insurance company.

Kattest:
Sorry, but as it affects Grolican's comments to you, apparently you have forgotten the rules of Libel.
First, if the statements are true, that is an absolute defense. The defamed party may not like reading the comments in the newspaper or on a web page, but if they are true there is nothing he can do except, perhaps, to submit a rebuttal statement.
Next, the comments may be privileged if they are part of the public record - for example, if they appeared earlier in a court case or if they are part of a legislative proceeding. In these cases there is almost nothing the defamed person can do. He can ask for a retraction, but there are no assurances he will get it.
Third, and this is most important, writers are entitled to express strong opinions about persons who are prominent in the news, such as politicians, movie stars, and television personalities. This is called the "fair comment and criticism" rule. Even if the statement is later shown to be false, the writer is protected as long as he was not motivated by malice in making it. Malice is generally defined as a "reckless disregard for the truth."

More media exposure gives the American people more opportunities to see that Barack Obama is a consummate BS artist. He told us that (a) he did not know that ACORN was getting all that much money, (b) he has more important issues to deal with, and (c) the individual mandate is not a tax.

To lizziefromcanada:
Good for you, for getting the right facts about health care in Canada out there. All these fictitious stories about people dying because of having to wait for proper care in Canada and Great Britain due to their so-called "flawed" system are all part of the plan to kill off reform in this country. We lived in England for 6 years, and never heard our British neighbors complain about their health care. The NHS has its flaws, like any system, but it is efficient, and it is compassionate.
The truth is that we do NOT have the best health care system in the world. We spend twice as much on healthcare as some other countries, and yet, our life expectancy is #50 in the world.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Health_care_system
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_life_expectancy
To rusty:
A 503c IS a non-profit. Non-profits can make a profit, as long as those profits don't go to the board of directors or shareholders, but, instead, go to pursue the mission of the organization.
Ninety-eight percent of ACORN's income comes from donations and fundraisers, and less than 2% from Federal funds. It is also a non-governmental agency. The way the conversations have been going on, and keep going on, it sounds like this is a Federal agency we're talking about, when it is not.ACORN's mission is laudable, and should be given a chance to re-organize, re-train employees, and keep its good work. Take a time to check their mission and what they have been doing for the last 40 years. The latest videos, although made as a "sting" operation, caught deplorable actions on the part of employees, and they should be fired, as we have learned they have. Nevertheless, a few bad apples should not spoil the whole bunch. Throw the bad ones out, but leave the good ones in to continue the great work they do for the poor and disadvantaged in their communities.
As for the article by Michelle Melkin, I'm sorry, but her words do not add any credence to any argument. Her conspiracy theories, and her preface that President Obama and everyone around him is corrupt, already taint her arguments. The article quotes comments on the $800,000+ payment, but does not provide facts. Facts can be easily verified just by googling, if you want to get the whole perspective on this or any other issues.
