Ted Kennedy Tells His Own Story
Lois Romano has this story today in the Washington Post on the book that is due out tomorrow. She describes a couple of powerful moments during the writing of it that give us a window into what it was like for Kennedy to be looking at the end of a remarkable life and trying to figure out what it all meant:
One day at lunch, Kennedy asked [publisher Jonathan] Karp how he thought the sessions were going. "I said I thought they were going well, that the stories were great. 'What I don't understand is how you dealt with all the loss,' " Karp recalls responding.
A few hours later, Kennedy came back to Karp. "I've been thinking about what you said," Kennedy said. "I think the reason I have been so restless in my life is that I have been trying to stay ahead of the darkness, to just keep moving to stay ahead of the despair."
Karp says there was only one time Kennedy openly wept.
"We were talking about family and how it fell to him to inform his father about JFK's death," said Karp, referring to Joseph P. Kennedy, who already had suffered a stroke. "The senator began describing the day to us and going up to his father's room -- and then he broke down in tears. He couldn't continue. What was so striking to me was that the event was still so raw for him."

I look forward to reading the book but NOT to the inevitable Doris Kearns Goodwin appearances on any show that will have her.

I am sure it will be a best seller on the NYT Fiction list

I've been away for a while. It looks like the conservatrolls have grown fewer in number but more intense in effort. It's like watching a boiled-down reduction of crazy.
They impress themselves easily, though, so thanks to you and the other sane commenters on this site for showing up the stupidity in this forum.
The great part is that all of this is permanent and someday they will have to live it down.

Haven't read leftist political activist Lois Romano's predictable, dutifully written, adoring tribute to the repulsive, treasonous cretin Kennedy, but does Romano quote the Soviet KGB memos, which detail Kennedy's traitorous collaboration with America's enemies (i.e., Kennedy's best friends)?

Thanks Karen for bringing this great, and I am sure purely fictional account of the life and times of Edward "the Murderer" Kennedy to our attention yet again.
.
By the way, could you ask the high Sheriffs to increase the font size on the post by JNS preceeding this post? The one that was written by a TIME intern?
.
Thank you Karen for your consideration on this. -

Those of you mean spirited and uncaring posters- have you ever benefitted from the laws Ted Kennedy pushed through congress and became the law of the land?
He had to live with the truth of Chappaquidick every day and as a wealthy man come have easily left the public scene and left the public eye
Still Ted Kennedy used that tragedy of his own making along with the tragedy's in his life of others making and turned to always help the less fortunate
The man had two children with cancer, lost three of his brothers to a premature death, broke his back as a young age -- he suffered plenty
Take this lesson from Ted Kennedy - turn your hate to do something positive -- all your darkness being turned inward is eating you - and your supposed cause - alive

Sometimes the unvarnished truth is just not pretty.
Try to recall some of the heartwarming things the left said about Reagan when it was announced he had Alzheimer's.
Your sanctimony knows no bounds.

I wasn't among those who said bad things about Reagan. 'The left" is not have collective responsinilty for individual actions. The folks here present are responsible for their own individual actions and they are reprehensible.

I have the book on reserve and hope to start reading it this week and cannot wait.
Teddy Kennedy may have had moments of poor judgement, but don't we all? Some worse than others, perhaps??
With that said, I must say his good deeds far outweighed the bad and his goodness with live on for a long time for many of the misfortunate who have benefited. I don't think many of us can always say that for sure.
Let me say to those who don't like Ted Kennedy and won't read the book, let him rest in peace. I would wish the same for you.

Murder, treason? Poor Judgment. A life of drinking and womanizing poor judgment? All were a choice he made.
And he made a career out of giving away money that was not his.
The left's canonization of this pathetic soul will continue but it does not fly>

I find the psuedo-indignation by liberals amusing. Here they demand respect for someone while calling people on this site vile and reprehensible things. At least one can say anyone discussing Sen. Kennedy has a long history of his actions. On this site, you name call and degrade people you don't know or have met and yet you are judge, jury and executioner because they may differ in opinion than you are speak positively of something you disagree.
The liberal creed of do as I say not as I do seems intact.

freeinpa,
I find YOUR psuedo-indignation rather amusing. Conservatives on this board dish it out as well as they take it.
The really amusing thing is that many Conservatives condemn Ted Kennedy for his actions while what they really hate is his politics. While I have heard a number of Liberals condemn Kennedy's actions (My own father, who is an admirer of Ted, called his actions, inexcusible), rarely do you hear Conservatives condemn one of their own. You will hear Conservatives condemn Robert Byrd for once being a KKK member, but you never hear them condemn Strom Thurmond.
Had Ted Kennedy been a Conservative, you can bet the Conservatives would have overlooked his failures. Had he not been a Kennedy, his personal behavior would not have made so much news.

I'll be the first to say that I am/was not a fan of Ted Kennedy. However, I understand what he meant to a lot of people (and not just self-avowed liberals), so I think it's important to be respectful, especially this early.
.
Plus, my mom taught me that if you don't have anything nice to say, you shouldn't say anything at all.-

I strongly suggest you re-read some of your other posts, then ask your mother to wash your mouth out with soap

Oh yeah? How about you cite some of my posts then, instead of offering vague generalities. All I meant was that it's important to be civil and respectful. Is that so bad?
-

How about this, if you can find something that I posted on here that's as bad as taunting a recently dead, revered political leader, then I'll apologize to you. Fair?

And also, yeah lots of people said horrific things about Reagan in wake of his diagnosis and death, things that infuriated me. Does that give Kennedy-haters reason to spew against him? Come on.

What does the book say about his 1964 plane crash?

MSM don't report stuff like this. It's about a Democrat, a Kennedy Democrat on top of that. Apollyon07 was half right, the truth behind that statement is 'if you don't have anything nice to say about a democrat, you shouldn't say anything at all'

Ted Kennedy was the most important legislator of the 20th century. His true legacy is greater than of his two older brothers combined. While his brothers are in the highlight reels, Ted's work is what impacts everyday Americans.
Ted was not perfect human being. He had many flaws. He used his wealth and position to get by in many cases. He left a young woman to die in a car he drove into a lake. He chased women. He drank too much.
I admire Ted Kennedy because of what he went through. It must have been difficult to have the weight of his brothers' expectations thrust upon his shoulders. At first he handled it very badly. And you have to wonder, based on his actions, did he, himself, really want to be president or was it what was expected of him? I can't imagine a life where if you are not elected President of the United States, you have failed to meet your family's expectations.
While Ted was the Liberal that Conservatives Love to Hate. His legislative records of working with Conservatives in Congress is second to none. When Dan Quayle ran for Vice President, the only legislation he had done had Kennedy as the co-sponsor. That should tell you something about Ted Kennedy.

Ted Kennedy became a wounded healer, and by all the accounts of those who spoke at his memorial service - including a good many who opposed him politically - a deeply compassionate man. Compassion generally grows when we learn that we're as much in need of forgiveness (even from ourselves) as the next person is, and then we can feel the pain of others.
