How soon we forget. If ever an event should have galvanized this country as did Pearl Harbor 60 years before, this was that event. And yet, eight years later, our politics is marked by puerility and our international reputation is only slowly being brought back from rock- bottom. We -- all of us -- dishonor by our conduct the memories of the innocents and the brave public servants who died that day.
    .
I am as guilty of this as are you, reader. We should all be ashamed.

"And yet, eight years later, our politics is marked by puerility and our international reputation is only slowly being brought back from rock- bottom."
      .
And by that statement you further your shame.
      .
One thing we shouldn't forget is who cheered 9/11.

    .
I disagree Bobell. I believe that most Americans still believe in Patriotism. While the far left have emerged again from the deep bowels of their holes, which they were relagated too soon after 9/11. The have re-emerged.
    .
It was heart-warming soon after 9/11 to see this country united under one banner that we are strong together as one voice. One mind. One country that said, "never again".
    .
But, I do think you have your basic principles confused, bobell. Patriotism is alive and well in middle America. Those who have abandoned their patriotism are not the conservative Democrats, Independents or Republicans. But your fellow far left, fringe Democrats.
    .
But, I am hopeful that the more conservative voices of the Democrat Party are returning to the values demonstrated during 9/11.
    .
I think where you confuse things, the far left fringe had basically crawled under ground, hiding in the dark recesses of their politically secluded lives at that time. .
    .
Today, with Obama's call for appeasement for our adversaries. Appeasement for those who would again do us harm, the slime that is the far left, have slowly but surely emerged from their under ground pits.
    .
But, I am hopeful with your comment. Perhaps more Democrats will also view how it is 8 years later, and decide that the direction Obama wants to take this country is not the direction the majority of Americans want to be taken. Perhaps in 2010, voters will once again call for a government that caters to ALL, and not just the few on the far left.

Thank you, Rusty, for proving my point.
      .
If I may elaborate slightly, I was trying to be nonpartisan in my initial remarks. It's not the Dems, it's not the Repubs, it's not the birthers or deathers or radiclibs or wingnuts -- it's all of us. Instead of focusing on what needs doing, we've lost our way, arguing over trivia and reaching a state of almost total political paralysis.
      .
Again -- It's all of us, the entire body politic, those who flaunt their patriotism and those equally patriotic who are embarrassed to admit it. We're all in this together, and we should all be ashamed. There's no choosing sides in this game, and no matter what uniform we wear we're all on the same self-destructive team. We have ignored the lesson -- and yes, the opportunity -- of 9/11, and we will all be to blame for the consequences.

Then bobell, you shouldn't make inflammatory statements, such as our national standing being very very low.

    • 3.3

I don't have time to go into detail, spob, but if you think our international standing during the second Bush administration wasn't very low, even among the industrialized democracies that are our natural allies, then you and I aren't ever going to agree on anything. I consider my statement about national standing a statement of fact, not inflammatory at all. And it had nothing to do with the Muslims dancing in the streets to celebrate 9/11. It had to do with countries where a headline like "Now We Are All Americans" could appear on a newspaper on 9/12/01 -- and four years later we could barely get a civil word out of them.
      .
I feel myself being dragged into yet another example of the sort of petty dispute that resolves nothing. My dream is that on a national scale we somehow figure out to discuss actual problems and seek fact-based solutions to them. But right now I can't even get out of this thread without yet another example of how things should not be done. To repeat: If you and I can't even agree on a relatively simple factual matter like this country's reputation overseas during the past few years, how will we ever agree on anything? How will a nation of more than three-hundred million people ever agree on anything?
      .
Stop resisting the analysis of individual symptoms and consider the disease as a whole. This is still a great country -- or at least it has the potential still to be one. When will we start acting like one?

9/11 is a reminder of the depraved and perniciously wicked people in the world who commit and continue to commit heinous acts.

I went downtown Manhattan a short while after those perniciously wicked amoral fiends had taken thousands of innocent lives-- It was a shocking, heart wrenching and horrible.

I lost friends in the World Trade Center on that day.

Every anniversary is a reminder to me that as individuals we have to cherish every day and live full and rewarding lives-- AND also remember that there must be no room for injustice and tolerance of criminality. There is no reason to encroach upon, threaten, abuse or kill anyone else because of real or imagined differences. To each his OWN religion, belief and life.

Sadly, no matter how much we want to live in a world where people respect each other and live and let live, there are those among us who are viciously depraved and unbelievable amoral and inhuman.
Such people (like the FELONS I discuss on my blog) are devoid of any modicum of humanity, depraved, desperate and vile Thugs. These fiends and others of their ilk are the reason for the existence of the Criminal Justice system.

I pray for the families that daily deal with the loss of their loved ones. I hope they heal with each passing day.
