Van Jones Apologizes, Says He's Not A 9/11 Truther
In response to a torrent of criticism, originated and directed by Fox News's Glenn Beck, White House adviser Van Jones has apologized for some of his past statements and distanced himself from a document he once signed.
"In recent days some in the news media have reported on past statements I made before I joined the administration – some of which were made years ago. If I have offended anyone with statements I made in the past, I apologize," Van Jones said, in a document emailed out Thursday night by the White House. Jones does not identify the offensive statements in question. But yesterday, in another apology, he was more specific, telling Politico and others that he should not have called opponents of Presdient Obama's legislation "assholes" during an event before he joined the White House.
But foul language is not Jones' biggest problem. On Thursday, it was revealed that Jones signed onto a petition in 2004 that called for an "immediate inquiry into evidence that suggests high-level government officials may have deliberately allowed the September 11th attacks to occur."
Jones now says that he did not sign on to the ideas described in what he signed. "As for the petition that was circulated today, I do not agree with this statement and it certainly does not reflect my views now or ever," Jones said in the statement.
Jones' job is to advise the White House Council on Environment Quality on green initiatives, but for his critics, it is, at least symbolically, much bigger. Beck, who has had as good an August run and Obama has had a bad one, makes a daily issue of the fact that Jones once identified as a communist, making him something sinister at the heart of the White House operation. To address these concerns, apparently, Van Jones adds one final line to his statement: "My work at the Council on Environmental Quality is entirely focused on one goal: building clean energy incentives which create 21st century jobs that improve energy efficiency and use renewable resources." In other words, he does not spend his time organizing the proletariat to seize the means of production, or whatever.
But the fact is that Beck, who has faced a withering sponsor boycott after he called Obama a "racist," now has a White House official backtracking. His brand of entertainment broadcasting--a sort of grab bag of candied popcorn populist outrage--has scored a hit. And there are no signs Beck will be easing back anytime soon. His new book, Arguing with Idiots, for which the broadcaster poses on the cover in what looks like a German or Russian World War II military uniform, hits store shelves September 22.

What he says now makes a lot of sense! Except, of course, for the fact that the WashTimes has verified that the website verified that those signing were indeed who they said they were: link.
.
It seems more than a bit fantastic that if that website had simply added famous people's names to the list five years ago none of them would have stepped forward to say they hadn't actually signed it. In fact, that's more than a bit fantastic.
.
On the other hand, at least one of the other signers is quite interesting too.-

kattest123, read carefully. He admits he signed it. He says he doesn't subscribe to the ideas described in the petition - in other words, he either didn't read it carefully or he no longer agrees with what he signed. People do learn and grow and change their minds, and I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt.

"Jones now says that he did not sign on to the ideas described in what he signed. "As for the petition that was circulated today, I do not agree with this statement and it certainly does not reflect my views now or ever," Jones said in the statement."
Hmm I don't believe what I signed or what I said and everything I said has no bearing on what I do. Seem to be a perfect fit for this adminsitration.
When their ideas, thoughts and words are analyzed peopel figure out quickly thi is not the changed they bargained for in the election.

You know Michael, you have been doing pretty good lately. But I have to take issue with this column, because it is lazy. Instead of vaguely alluding to Jones' past provocative statements that his "critics" seem to take issue with, why not spell it out. Why not identify exactly which statements are at issue (the only one that got the most press was the a**hole comments). Why assume that your readership watches Beck's show?
And while your at it, why not do some digging on your own and provide context for the statements where needed...surely you don't expect people with intelligence to rely on the rantings of someone who describes himself, and behaves like a clown. You've been really good in the past couple of weeks about providing background details and facts, I don't know why your short changed this blog post by steering away from that.

Any chance that Beck hates Van Jones because he was the co-founder of Color of Change, the organization that is taking down Beck's sponsors, in by one?
-
5.1
Beck profiled Jones on his show before the boycott. And even if you believe that Beck has stepped up his attacks on Jones as retaliation it doesn't change the facts. Jones has said a lot of controversial things and did sign the petition.
-
5.2
Or could Color of Change "be taking down Beck's sponsors one by one" because Beck began investigating Van Jones? Hmmm . . . which came first? The investigation of Van Jones, by several months. You figure it out, genius.

Phuck off. Don't you dare get on your high horse about foul language and questionable claims. where have you been in the past 3 months?

It would be a bit incorrect to say Glenn Beck "originated" this particular piece of criticism, as your first paragraph seems to imply. But boy, did he jump on it.
-
8
OK, 2 complaints here:
1) Beck fires 6,487 rounds. Some cause great collateral damage; thankfully most whiz harmlessly into outer space. One hits a target (a relatively insignificant one, but certainly one who could have behaved better).
Somehow, this is a GREAT VICTORY FOR BECK?
I mean, it seems to me that your headline should reflect the actual reason why this is newsworthy, saying something like "Beck Fails to Screw Up!" or "Gadzooks! Beck delivers a legitimate criticism" or even "Hey! Here's one that Beck didn't just make up!"
2) One of Obama's underlings is found to have committed a political indiscretion (we'll leave the discussion of the relative thresholds of Democrat vs. Republican indiscretions for another thread). Underling is called on it. Underling admits error and apologizes. Presumably, underling and Administration learn something from this episode and move on.
So why does the MSM (that's you, MS) portray this as "bad for Obama" and "good for Beck"? Shouldn't admitting and learning from errors instead be portrayed as evidence of a healthy and functioning organization, as opposed to the Rovian denial and promotion of the up-screwers that we endured through the Bush years?-
8.1
OK, after a few minutes of reflection, I can point out the contrast more clearly:
A: Confronted with evidence, Democratic underling backs off over-the-top claims.
B: Confronted with evidence, Beck (et. al.) nonetheless clings to patently false claims.
By what game rules does Beck come out looking better here? -
8.2
Joe, you took the words right out of my mouth...and assembled them quite nicely!
I find it unbelievable that self-admitted "entertainment broadcasters" such as Beck are on a channel called Fox NEWS. They argue that the left has their own "entertainment broadcasters." Guess what? They are on COMEDY Central and SHOWTIME, channels where you expect to find fiction. They are not on a NEWS channel whose tag line is FAIR AND BALANCED.I'd call what Fox News is doing anti-American and unpatriotic. Beck, Hannity and others have tapped into a large-ish audience of people who believe their lies, mostly because these people hear the lies on a NEWS channel. Fox has turned their viewers into outraged dupes, much like the villagers in "Frankenstein." Hopefully, most will eventually come to their senses, HOPEFULLY before one of the villagers grabs their pitchfork...er...handgun and gets too close to our president. It seems to be what these ultra right-wing nutcases are angling for, what they are crafting with their messages that are taken RIGHT out of the Nazi indoctrination handbook: they HOPE they will incite someone to go off the deep end and do the dirtywork they would love to see done.
So, Im going to add 'treasonous' to Fox News' list of failings. And keep shaking my head with disbelief when the people using the Nazi tactics put a Hitler mustache on the president. Who ARE these crazy people?!?

8.3
let me ponder this,Mr. Jones is a Czar, hmmm Czar meaning extreme leader, back when Nicholas took over Russia in 1917,but actually originated with julius Caesar being the last syllable of his name tsar/czar/tcar,so Van Jones is extreme leader?we have 35 other Czars, does that mean 36 extreme leaders?I am so confused with this idelogy, what does that make Obama? Extremly extreme leader?and why he did that? NO congressional confirmation, which I doubt Mr. Jones or many others would pass, even with a Democratic fillabuster proof Congress.

I wish he wouldn't have backed down from his statement that Republicans are a**holes. All you have to do is go to a Republican website and look what they are saying about Obama's birth certificate or whether he can talk to children to see Van Jones knew what he was talking about.
I think that the Bush Administration had plenty of evidence that something big was coming up on the radar, but it was coming from Clintonites they were trying to unload and didn't trust like Richard Clarke, and from the CIA, which was a department they were convinced was a liberal hotbed out to screw them over.
Does that make me a Truther?-
9.1
I tend to agree with JONES on this 1 point A***oles, but he left out Dems also,I deal in facts, not suppositions, he (Jones) avowed himself a communist revolutionary,he signed a 9/11 truther doctrine and didn't know it,Lemme sell him a house or car then,an a avowed black panther recruiter,an avowed marksist,a convicted felon, now what is made up here?

Given the fact that 65% (sixty-five percent!) of Democrats are 9/11 Truthers who "think" that George W. Bush had foreknowledge of the 9/11 attacks, I highly doubt that Van Jones is the only whack job Truther working for Obama. I'll wait for the Washington press corps to reveal, immediately, the names of the other Truthers infesting the White House. Not....

You know, if we are going to start in with a puritanical witch hunt to remove the "truthers" from the government, we should also do the same for the "birthers". Afterall, we have several republican congress critters who have signed on to the birther nonsense.

I don't think GW Bush had anything to do with 9/11 for one simple reason: It worked.

As usual, testes, you have n o credibility.
If 26% "aren't sure" how do they magically become part of your "whack jobs" who "believe" GWB had "foreknowledge of the 9/11 attacks"? Your New Math is creative, to say the least.
Also, "foreknowledge" might not mean you think he had complicity - you might just think getting a CIA briefing headlined "bin Laden Determined to Attack in the U.S." means you were aware (or at least should have been aware) that something was going to happen.

Seriously, who gives a crap about this other than the lunatics? Obama surrounds himself with people of all sorts of different political views; his one abiding thing has been to find areas of agreement with people, who otherwise might be philosophical and political opposites, and then working with them on the particular area of expertise. Surely we should encourage that, whatever else we can complain about?
I remember reading something (I actually think it was an old Time article) about how one of President Obama's closest friends in the senate was Tom Coburn - yes the same loony wingnut we've heard saying outrageous thing - but of course this hardly gets noticed. I for one am glad that the President is able to hear differing and opposing points of view.
-

Just another classic example of why Democrats just do not get it.
I feel like I have been watching a foot ball game where one team is playing touch in shorts and jerseys while the opposing team is playing full on tackle in full gear, for the last 8 months.
Our hapless Democrat said and did some stupid things. But who hasn't and that is not why I call him hapless. He is hapless because he probably thinks that he can just apologize and put this in the past for him and the administration. Maybe in a fair and just world people would accept his apology and move on. But that is not how republicans roll.
An apology should be about forgiveness. But the republicans are not going to forgive Van because they literally hate him and everything his boss stands for. They are going to accept Van's apology in the spirit of a club to be used at a later date to beat Obama about the head and shoulders.
The only question now is does Van resign today or while Obama is giving his apology for attempting to provide everyone with health care speech.

"[Beck's] brand of entertainment broadcasting--a sort of grab bag of candied popcorn populist outrage"
And here you have it. It is indeed rare for a representative of a particular professional mentality to illuminate so clearly and succinctly with one simple statement why that mentality is destructive to the cultural fabric of a nation: When a dangerous sociopath like Beck, who shows a total indifference to facts and is apparently entirely devoid of either empathy or a conscience, is excused by a professional "journalist" as merely an entertainer dealing in "candied popcorn populist outrage," it becomes crystal clear why the crazies have managed to hijack what ought to have been a reasoned discussion over fixing health care and turned it into a treacherous, extremist political movement.
What's wrong with Scherer and his ilk? They are not idiots, they've been to college and must have studied a little history. Are they really incapable of distinguishing between raunchy entertainment and the corrosive effect of having demagogues with microphones and cameras spew vile lies day after day to millions of frustrated, uninformed cretins? Yet our mainstream "journalists" seem incapable or unwilling to call Beck, Limbaugh, O'Reilly, Hannity, Savage, Dobbs, and all the other TV and radio screamers what they really are: radicals who will stop at nothing in their effort to delegitimize and render impotent a democratically elected government. They started with Clinton and by now they're really figured it out and they know exactly how to ferment irrational rage.
Every age has its paranoid radicals who have no respect for democratic institutions. In civilized counties the gatekeepers of public discourse understand that while anyone should be able to say whatever he wants, not everyone is worth listening to. It used to be the same here. But now the nutjobs who would be screaming in Hyde Park Speakers' Corner if they were in the UK are on prime time TV and Scherer thinks one of them is an entertainer.

It is like some insidious disease, perhaps power is so much like crack that Republicans are willing to do anything to get another swirl of the bowl. How demoralizing it must be to find only lint. Glenn Beck Mikey?

These smack heads oppose President Obama speaking to their children, yet they don't seem to worry that some day the will have to face their children and explain why they used every despicable means at their disposal, including fomenting armed insurrection to try and destroy a Democratically elected President.
.
I suppose their sense of entitlement is so insatiable that they won't care that their children will judge them as being shamelessly devoid of integrity, decency, or morality. Personally I can't wait for the day you try to teach your children not to lie, cheat or steal. Because if there is one thing I can guarantee, it's that teens will take everything you do and throw it back in your hypocritical face. And Mikey, fair warning, there is nothing that will send you to the pipe faster than the need to escape a look of shame and disgust on your child's face -- Glenn Beck MIke? Clearly, you will have earned yours.-

Clearly the "Truthers" are right here. Reading through the mounds of garbage and excuses being given by the liberal posters on this page is truly unbelieveable.
Accept it as FACT people. Van Jones is and avowed Communist. He has made that very clear on many occassions.
Accept it as FACT people. Van Jones is a racist, Black National Liberation member.
Accept it as FACT people. Van Jones is currenlty Obama's "Green Job's Czar", responsible for over 80 MILLION dollars of Stimulus money, and he will decide how that money will be spent.
Further questions should be to the Obama Administration:
1. Who knew about this man? Who knew he held these very RADICAL beliefs?
2. Who was responsible for "vetting" this guy before he was given the position of "Green Jobs Czar"?
3. Why is Obama not disavowing this man, just like he did with Jeremiah Wright?
4. Why is the President of the United States allowing Van Jones to continue within his Administration now that this information has come to light?
Why? Because Obama knew clearly what Van Jones' beliefs are and were in the past. Valerie Jarrett in her own words said Obama and she have known Jones "ever since his days at Berkley".
Now the questions about Obama himself. Why does this man prove time and time again he has no ability what-so-ever to choose people WITHOUT RADICAL backgrounds?
Or, is it that Obama himself believes exactly what these people he associates himself with is TRUTH?
If Obama also believes in this ULTRA LIBERAL CRAP, then it is time for Obama to GO!! IMPEACH THE IDIOT!

It's against my better judgment to reply to people who USE ALL CAPS and strings of exclamation marks for emphasis since they make it too obvious that they are excitable creatures, and not really interested in debating any particular point, but would instead rather pitch a fit about whatever gets them all jiggly. But I do want to point out to anyone who happens to read the primal shriek above that here is more proof of how utterly immature and irresponsible conservatives have become.
There are so many urgent things to worry about: two wars, a recession, unemployment, a health care system that's more expensive and less efficient than that of any other country, humongous national debt and trade deficit, a crumbling infrastructure, potently devastating climate changes, dysfunctional government agencies, etc., etc. And what do cons obsess about? Some obscure bureaucrat, somebody nobody knew about a week ago, whose position is an advisory one, and whose crime is... well, I'm really not sure. He hasn't done anything as far as I can tell that would be corrupt or criminal. His major trespass seems to be that he had opinions, ideals and/or associations that are not on Beck's approved list. Oh, and he spoke the truth about Republicans one time. That's it. Even if he were a freakin' "Czar, responsible for over 80 MILLION dollars!" he hasn't done anything in his job to show incompetence or sleaze. I mean, as far as we know he didn't even use government helicopters to visit churches or mistresses or whatever Republican officials do these days.
In a functioning democracy people's associations, private lives, religious convictions and political ideals and beliefs should be their own. There should be no tests of patriotism or loyalty, no oaths, no pressure to conform to a lifestyle or perspective. What Van Jones or anybody else in this administration or any other, Republican or Democratic, believes or believed or will believe should be of no consequence; who their friends or relatives were or are or will be should be of no consequence. The only thing that matters is how well they do their jobs. Beck and his thought police clowns aspire to nothing less than turning America into a totalitarian country where everyone should have the "right" thoughts or else be persecuted and destroyed.
The idea of democracy itself is predicated on disagreement: if everybody agreed on policy and politics, what's the point of having elections? Elections are supposed to be like legal verdicts, where opposing ideas get a thorough airing and then the electorate votes, and those who lost have to accept the verdict -- even if they don't like it. We had an election, the guy with the most votes was elected, and whether you like him or not, he's the President of the United States. Those who disagree with him (and I know I do on many issues) should argue against his policies and wait a few years to vote him out of office -- peacefully, civilly and democratically. However, the true radicals among us decided that elections do not matter and so we must impeach the current President because one of his advisors thought things Beck decided he doesn't like.

I do believe that any President should set the standard, and Obama clearly has shown now and in the past that his associations "clearly show who I am and what I am about", using his own words.
.
You may very well be a communist, and so be it, if so. I happen to believe in OUR system of democracy, not some lunatics idea of what we should be, and now has the means to make it happen through his association and promotion by Obama to his position as "Green Job's Czar". With a statement like this…

” What Van Jones or anybody else in this administration or any other, Republican or Democratic, believes or believed or will believe should be of no consequence; who their friends or relatives were or are or will be should be of no consequence.”

I am absolutely not surprised you take the stance and opinion about Van Jones. Your “Colors of Change” are very evident. It is evident that you are just another liberal nutjob who is pleased and happy with this comedy called a President..

You said: "Accept it as FACT people. Van Jones is and avowed Communist. He has made that very clear on many occassions."
This is based on a statement made in a 2005 East Bay Express article that chronicles the evolution of Van's political views. Of course, it ignores the part of the article that clearly states that Van's views changed in 2000. Anyone who reads the article in its entirety would soon discover that the statement is take out of context and twisted.
Here's the link to the article being repeatedly referenced:
http://www.eastbayexpress.com/gyrobase/the_new_face_of_environmentalism/Content?oid=290098&showFullText=true(I dare you to read the whole thing.)
You said: "Accept it as FACT people. Van Jones is a racist, Black National Liberation member."
I'm sure his Caucasian wife and two mixed-race children are happy that you informed them.
You said: "Accept it as FACT people. Van Jones is currenlty Obama's "Green Job's Czar", responsible for over 80 MILLION dollars of Stimulus money, and he will decide how that money will be spent."
First of all, there is no such thing as a "Green Jobs Czar". Secondly, Van is not an adviser to the President, he is an adviser to a COMMITTEE. Thirdly, his job is not to dispense any money, it is to help write policies.
Once again, hate- and fear-mongers are putting forth fiction as "fact" before they know what they are talking about. Yes, Van has made some outrageous statements in his role as activist/community organizer, but many were made in jest or as the use of imagery with which his audiences could identify. Instead of being spoon-fed information, people should really do an independent investigation of ALL of the information available.

Not since Joe McCarthy shuffled off this mortal coil in 1957 has anyone made a career by accusing people of being communists. Glenn Beck has resurrected the practice. Not only has he found a cabal of secret communists, he has uncovered an entire communist corporation chock full of commies. The name of this company, you may ask?
THE NATIONAL BROADCASTING COMPANY!
You heard me right, boys and girls. The network that gave us Uncle Miltie and Ma Perkins has apparently been secretly sending subliminal messages endorsing Marxist doctrine since it was formed in 1926. This would make perfect sense to me. Every time I watched the Rockford Files I had an unexplainable desire to read Das Kapital. But seriously, folks. Twenty years after the fall of the Soviet Union, red baiting not only seems silly, it's also kind of nuts. It's not-at-all surprising that an organization would give this idiot a forum (after all, he's on FOX Noise). What's really stunning is the fact that his ratings are relatively high and that so many Americans take his word as gospel.
All kidding aside, half-witted ideologues are a dime a dozen. What separates Glenn Beck from his peers is the fact that he is doing some serious damage to the country he professes to love so much. For all of the comparisons to the Nazis he likes to make with respect to Liberals, Beck's program has much in common with Adolf Hitler's 1923 screed, Mein Kampf. Eighty-six years ago, Hitler attempted to arouse the anger of his fellow Germans by spouting half truths and utter nonsense - exactly what Glenn Beck is doing in 2009. So much of the insane dialogue that has been spewed forth at these Town Hall meetings across the country in recent weeks might have been lifted straight from a transcript of Beck's program.
Beck and his strange ilk have done the impossible. They have deflected the blame for America's current economic distress from where it should be aimed toward a man who is trying to clean up the mess that was created - in large part - by people like Glenn Beck. They have also let loose with a vengeance the very worst angels of the American nature. Opening Pandora's box was relatively easy. Closing it might prove to be a bit of a problem.

rusty you hit the nail on head. Once again the liberals when caught in being honest as the clips of Van Jones has shown, they immediately attack the deliver of the news by questioning their integrity or sanity. Not once do they address the real issue. It is also telling the general reaction of the public when these liberals are caught telling their true feelings and their backpedaling
This guy is not a supposed communist because Beck is accusing him of being one but by the fact he admits it. If a republican nominee for an administration post uttered half of the crap this guy did, liberals would be burning the streets.
They also then jump on their favorite punching bags (O'Reilly, Beck, Hannity) as liars but never seem to mention Schultz, Olbermann, Matthews or Maddow. Schultz recently said he never saw a single democrat compare Bush with Hitler. There are tons of archived info to the contrary. The problem with liberals is they believe if they say something, it is the truth regardless of reality. And only they know the truth.
Want honest debate? Start by not lying to yourself.
