		<description>Lou Dobbs continues to make a fool of himself, of CNN and of Time Warner, which owns this blog and pays my salary. When Jim DeMint, the oh-so-conservative Senator from South Carolina, says that the Obama birth certificate isn&#039;t an issue, and when electronic copies of the birth certificate have been produced--and certified--by the state of Hawaii, one wonders why Dobbs keeps flogging this...and why CNN allows him to do it.Certainly, Dobbs has a right to say what he likes. Plenty of nutballs go on television--as guests--and say all sorts of stupid, meretricious things. (CNN has its share of odious guests, though--happily, to my eye--fewer than its competitors.) But when you give someone the authority of an hour-long show on the cable network that stands closer to actually being fair-and-balanced than any other, you have the right to expect some journalistic integrity...or you have the responsibility to call the show what it is, The Lou Dobbs Paranoid Crazy Conspiracy Hour. Maybe Mr. Dobbs likes to just hear himself talk, talk, talk. Maybe CNN and Time Warner are so desperate for ratings they will allow him to continue making a fool of himself so people will tune in. Maybe people like to make spurious comments of those over them without substantial proof to give the allusion of authority and intellect. Maybe if people would turn off their sets this sort of sleazy reporting would die an unnatural death.</description>

Natural-born citizen

Who is a natural-born citizen? Who, in other words, is a citizen at birth, such that that person can be a President someday?

The 14th Amendment defines citizenship this way: &quot;All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and of the State wherein they reside.&quot; But even this does not get specific enough. As usual, the Constitution provides the framework for the law, but it is the law that fills in the gaps.

Currently, Title 8 of the U.S. Code fills in those gaps. Section 1401 defines the following as people who are &quot;citizens of the United States at birth:&quot;

    * Anyone born inside the United States *

		<description>It amazes me- TRULY amazes me - how many times the GOP can keep running the same playbook and still have it work. This &#039;proof of citizenship&#039; BS is a prime example: get folks worked up over a detail that has no bearing whatsoever on any actual issue- just appeal to the simple-minded&#039;s most base, paranoid fears and not only will they come running, the other side will huff and puff as hard as they can to blow the house of straw down.
It started with Nixon (hell, it&#039;s how he got elected-TWICE), continued through Reagan and was amped up to 11 with Dubya.
They can keep playing these nickel-and-dime games forever, &#039;cause they know the other side will always take the bait. All they need to do is bide time until they find another hand-puppet to sit in the Oval and pack his (or her- Palin IS still out there, after all) cabinet with the Rove-trained faithful.
It&#039;d be nice to NOT have history repeat itself in 2011...it&#039;d be nicer still for the current administration not to eff things up in the meantime, &#039;cause any old excuse will do.</description>
