Lou Dobbs: Public Embarrassment
Lou Dobbs continues to make a fool of himself, of CNN and of Time Warner, which owns this blog and pays my salary. When Jim DeMint, the oh-so-conservative Senator from South Carolina, says that the Obama birth certificate isn't an issue, and when electronic copies of the birth certificate have been produced--and certified--by the state of Hawaii, one wonders why Dobbs keeps flogging this...and why CNN allows him to do it.
Certainly, Dobbs has a right to say what he likes. Plenty of nutballs go on television--as guests--and say all sorts of stupid, meretricious things. (CNN has its share of odious guests, though--happily, to my eye--fewer than its competitors.) But when you give someone the authority of an hour-long show on the cable network that stands closer to actually being fair-and-balanced than any other, you have the right to expect some journalistic integrity...or you have the responsibility to call the show what it is, The Lou Dobbs Paranoid Crazy Conspiracy Hour.

Thanks, Joe. I'm more disappointed by CNN's top brass (ha!) backtracking on stopping airtime of “Perry Mason and the Case of the Missing Birth Certificate”.
-
3
Thanks Joe. I do wonder about Dobbs. he seems to be getting increasingly worse over the past 5 years or so. Slow growing brain tumor, perhaps?
-

I think there's a misspelling in your post.
Everywhere else I've encountered it, it's spelled Loud Obbs.-
4.1
...when you give someone the authority of an hour-long show on the cable network that stands closer to actually being fair-and-balanced than any other, you have the right to expect some journalistic integrity..."
The other typo is "CNN", the biggest journalistic cable horror show this side of CNBC. I'll take Joe's comment as a not-too-veiled swipe at the dirty hippies at MSNBC. Too bad, they have a ways to go but real journalists like Rachel Maddow, who actually work to make sure that people know the truth about what's important (which was the definition of journalism before train wrecks like CNN), make every single gasbag on CNN from Blitzer to Brown look like clueless, self-important idiots.

Spot on Joe.
I would note however this is a direct result of media now being primarily an "entertainment for profit industry" vice the "4th estate" that informs the people and helps level the playing field between government, ordinary citizens, and large industry.
While there are still good journalists and good journalism about, it is the exception and not the rule. As you mentioned, CNN is probably the best of the major mainstream entities, but they know they have a niche market they can appeal to in Dobbs. I often remind people that even if only 1% of the American population believes something, no matter how fringe or outlandish that thing may be, that constitutes over 3 million people. If you can appeal to even a tenth of that, that's three hundred thousand people.
So call the 'birthers' crazy or whatever, but to CNN (and any other major business entity) 0.1% of the population is far and away worth the investment. In their mind, that means viewership for a couple hours a day and advertising dollars. It's not an integrity or moral decision or any of that to them. It is a business decision. Math by the numbers. Pure and simple.
-
8
I agree about Dobbs, but your praise of CNN's other programming is unwarranted. CNN emphasizes "balance" to the exclusion of accuracy, resulting in equal time for liars and crooks who go unchallenged by allegedly knowledgeable reporters.
When CNN's not sacrificing insightful coverage in favor of superficial balance they're sacrificing in-depth coverage of important issues in favor of seeming tech-savvy by reading viewers' tweets ad nauseam.

what Dobbs is really saying (from Joe's link....)
I believe the President is a citizen of the United States, I don't understand why he shouldn't produce a birth certificate
what Obama has produced is not a birth certificate, but a "certificate of live birth" that can be obtained simply by an assertion that the birth mother was a citizen of Hawaii for a year prior to the birth of the child.
Like Dobbs, I believe that Obama is a citizen -- and like Dobbs, I also see no reason why Obama should not produce the primary documentation requested.
Are there crazy "birthers" out there? Yup. But rebutting the "crazies" doesn't mean that the original documents should not be produced, any more than rebutting the craziest of the 9-11 conspiracy theorists meant that no investigation into the lead-up to 9-11 should have been conducted.
-
11.1
I've never seen Hillary Clinton's birth certificate. Would it be elitist to ask for one?
-
11.2
I'm sure that if there had ever been any question about where Hillary Clinton was born, she'd produce the necessary documents -- just as John McCain did when there was a question of whether he was born in the USA. (At one point, people questioned whether McCain had been born in Panama, because his father was stationed in the Canal Zone when McCain was born. McCain produced the documents showing that he was born in a hospital in the Canal Zone.)

11.4
I bet you're still waiting to hear the dark truth about what really happened to Vince Foster.
-
11.5
Ahh, yess.....I remember now how touchy you Hillbots are about the issue of race. Seems to me all of the Hillbots were absolutely up in arms about the 'typical white person' comment. I think we all know what's up with you.
-
11.6
Thank you plukasiak for demonstrating why Joe's post is needed and why Lou Dobbs is an embarrassment (at least to journalism).
If you had been watching a real news program you would have the answer to your assertion: 'what Obama has produced is not a birth certificate...Like Dobbs, I believe that Obama is a citizen -- and like Dobbs, I also see no reason why Obama should not produce the primary documentation requested.'
Could it be that the reason you can't see why Obama hasn't produced the document you demand is that your news sources have failed to inform you that it doesn't exist. Not just for Obama, but for EVERYONE born at the time he was in Hawaii. Follow this link to find out what your news sources seem to be failing to tell you: link to the information you desire!!
Flogging a topic like this and asserting, as Dobbs does, that Obama's answer to these ludicrous charges has been insufficient, when he's done everything that's physically possible to do, is either incredibly ignorant or willfully deceptive.
-
11.7
"...what Obama has produced is not a birth certificate, but a "certificate of live birth" that can be obtained simply by an assertion that the birth mother was a citizen of Hawaii for a year prior to the birth of the child."
Now please explain why that is insufficient.
Personally, I hope that Obama "produces" not another single piece of documentary evidence of his birth. For birthers, it wouldn't matter one whit (in fact, it would be further proof of conspiracy - they're nucking futs) and I'm really enjoying, in the absence of a functional press with the guts to tell people the truth about them, watching the right-wing of this country become further and further demarcated from the comparatively sane rest of us.
-
11.8
I don't see you asking for Hilary's birth certificate. She's doesn't appear Native American and I have no proof that she is not a Canadian or British immigrant and neither do you. But it doesn't occur to you to even ask. His citizenship has been proven repeatedly and the only people questioning it are crazies and people who think he doesn't deserve to be President like Hillary puma's.

From the link I cited above:
The state Department of Health no longer issues copies of paper birth certificates as was done in the past, said spokeswoman Janice Okubo.
The department only issues "certifications" of live births, and that is the "official birth certificate" issued by the state of Hawaii, she said.
And, it's only available in electronic form.
Okubo explained that the Health Department went paperless in 2001.
"At that time, all information for births from 1908 (on) was put into electronic files for consistent reporting," she said.
Information about births is transferred electronically from hospitals to the department.
"The electronic record of the birth is what (the Health Department) now keeps on file in order to provide same-day certified copies at our help window for most requests," Okubo said.
Asked for more information about the short-form versus long-form birth documents, Okubo said the Health Department "does not have a short-form or long-form certificate."
"The birth certificate form has been modified over the years and decades to conform to national standards and models," she said.
This fully and completely answers the primary charge of the 'Birthers'. However, as with most conspiracy theories pushed by the fringe over the past two Democratic presidencies, they are busy 'improving' on it.
Anyone who saw fringe wingnut 'birther' queen Orly Taitz on Colbert yesterday heard her improve on her charges. She's now discovered a requirement (apparently hidden in the 'secret Muslim' section of the constitution) that not only does the president have to be born in the US but his parents do as well! And guess what? Obama's father was African!! Let the wingnuttyness continue!!
-
11.10
my father can't produce a birth certificate either, though I am pretty certain he was born in Richmond, Virginia in 1935. If he were elected president, would demand proof of his birth?
-
11.11
'my father can't produce a birth certificate either...If he were elected president, would demand proof of his birth?'
It all depends. What party is he a member of?
-
11.12
the original paperwork still exists, and is, in fact, available. Indeed, because of the potential for data entry error, the original paperwork (or microfiche/microfilm copies of it) would have to be maintained.
Moreover, the hospital records still exist -- and all that Obama would have to do is authorize the hospital to release the original admission and billing records and the whole question would be settled.
-
11.13
Wanna see photos of the original document, taken by an unbiased source? Look here: link
.
Unfortunately, the photos of the certificate weren't taken on a Tuesday by photographers wearing blue sweaters and facing east into the rising sun while standing on one foot, so obviously they don't count.

-
12
Lou, when Ann Coulter thinks you are a crank you've probably have gone a bit too far.
-
13
Pretty embarrassing alright. I remember one 'journalist' who claims to this day that he was against the Iraq invasion even though there is video of that journalist expressly endorsing the idea. It's been a daily parade of journalistic embarrassment.
.
CNN looks to be staking a claim to the ever increasing segment of panicked conservatives, who you'll remember don't have any philosophy or principles other than the maintenance of a white dominated society.-
13.1
given your comments about people's person travails in here, I don't think you really have any standing to call anything an embarassment . .. .
-
13.2
The other crazy thing, cincinnatus, is that they're chasing a dwindling, unpopular faction. Just as Michael Lewis describes in in Moneyball, organizations are in the thrall of self-damning, factually inaccurate ideologies.
And remember, this is the whole modern GOP, too, up to Roy Blunt and his boss Rush Limbaugh.
Really, Joe, you need to do as Dee in Columbia MD suggests, and pointing out the mass irrationality and unseriousness of the GOP and the media, in print.
-
-
14
Never was a viewer even when Dobbs seemed rightwing but essentially sane, so I really haven't understood whether he gradually went crazy or just honed some marketable idiot shtick (e.g., Ann Coulter, Sarah Palin, Andrew Dice Clay).
But I blame these craven enablers for the current sorry state of TV "news." They provide the carnival barkers with cameras and microphones:
CNN/U.S. president - Jon Klein
Fox News Channel president - Roger Ailes
And when you've had it with Pat Buchanan and the assorted morning nitwits at MSNBC, it's NBC News president Steve Capus and MSNBC president Phil Griffin.A pox...
-
15
"Plenty of nutballs go on television--as guests--and say all sorts of stupid, meretricious things."
.
Sounds to me like Joe is trying to get himself some more TV bookings . . . -
16
Lou Dobbs has been a joke for some time. He has the "best television panel" and panders to the fringers. But CNN has been going steadily downhill for some time. They have now institutionalised the "two points of view" on any issue under discussion.
Guests know that most of the hosts, including Wolf Blitzer and Rick Sanchez are braindead: all more interested in instant viewer reactions and tweets.
There was a time when the first thing one did on entering ones's room in a foreign hotel: turn on to CNN. Now it's turn on BBC.

It strikes me that this is what the republican party has come to in 2009.
Birthers and Gates.
While they split on whether or not the president is American and are united that a cop was wronged and insulted by not one but two black men the Democrats are having to deal with Health Care, the economy, Afghanistan etc.
Not exactly healthy for the country but you deal with the republican party you have not republican party one you want.
-
20
You have it exactly right pnnto!
And until the mainstream press puts the GOP talking points through the woodshed of truth like Rachel Maddow put the Buchanan op-ed, the madness will continue. Thanks Joe for some of what you've said, but even though you share parent organizations, you should be completely honest and expose CNN for the enablers of the GOP mythology they have become.
-
21
Since Joe Klein has admitted that he "loves" a specific illegal activity, perhaps his POV is a bit skewed.
Also, regarding CNN, here's an example of another host lying about this issue. I'm sure we won't have to wait long for Joe to speak out against that. Unless, of course, Joe wants to wait for MMFA and MoveOn to give him the signal.
-
22
bobcn1 is being deceptive above. The originals weren't destroyed. And, here's a picture of the long-form.
A BHO supporter lying? What's the world coming to!
-
22.1
You sure got me there! You're citing an article by that paragon of sanity Jerome Corsi on WorldNetDaily and I'm only citing an interview with a spokeswoman at the Hawaiian Department of Health. Clearly you're article is the kind of non-partisan information honest seekers of fact will prefer.
As White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said when asked if there was anything that could be done to satisfy the 'birthers': "No. The God's honest truth is no."
-
22.2
Actually, the article you cite is quite entertaining.
My favorite part is where they breathlessly announce: 'WND also has reported Obama has not released his kindergarten records...'
-
22.3
Not only is bobcn1 a liar, he apparently can't read. The picture at the second link in my comment is from the Honolulu Advertiser. Bobcn1 apparently wants you to think they just made up that picture.
Even better, his article and the first one I linked both quote the same person.
P.S. Before the election, the Obama campaign edited an entire sentence out of a Jerome Corsi quote in an attempt to make him look bad. They didn't provide ellipses or anything; they just removed an entire sentence without disclosing what they'd done.
-
22.4
Jerome Corsi edited all of Barack Obama's life in his half-assed attempt at character assassination, "Obama Nation." One example (paraphrased): I don't know if Obama ever sold drugs or if he continues to use drugs, but it's a concern.
And you're up in arms about a sentence of Corsi's being edited out. Stay classy, GOP.

I don't know about Dobbs, who has always been a xenophobic wackadoo, but Jon Klein I think has taken a hard look at Beck's ratings and wants himself some of dat. So he allows this. It's all about ratings. Dobbs was dying a slow death with his anti-immigration schtick, and his ratings have picked up since he joined the birfers.
They all thought that Beck would be buried under a mountain of ridicule, but his ratings rival Billo's now, and Klein probably thinks he can take over some of Beck's overflow. Shep Smith (Dobb's competitor on Fox) is making too much sense these days.
-
24
I used to watch CNN but it started to go in the direction of spinning the news instead of reporting it. Dobbs has been making the crazy train ride for a few years now and I can't understand why CNN doesn't put him out to pasture. He's just a slightly saner Glenn Beck. Beck continues to be the gold standard for batsh!t crazy on the tube.
If CNN doesn't get it's act together it's going to be another Fox. On Fox both the anchors and the people who watch them are nuts. I'd hate to see us get to the point where we have to listen to another country's news shows to find out what's really happening over here.
-
25
"Thanks Joe for some of what you've said, but even though you share parent organizations, you should be completely honest and expose CNN for the enablers of the GOP mythology they have become."
That's just not going to happen. It's good that Joe is taking on the nuttiest of the nuts (Dobbs) and most most mendacious of the liars (Kristol and Krauthammer) but it's also reasonable safe and useless from his particular perch. When he tells the truth about that fact that about a third of the country is functionally insane thanks to "conservative" indoctrination, then I'll be both impressed and grateful.
-
25.1
There's a story here, but it's not about Obama and his birth records. Its about the right-wing fringe and the con-men and crazies that incite them. That's a very dangerous story to tell.
.
This stuff has been going on for a very long time. As long as con-artists like Corsi and Orly Taitz are given air time by the 'respectable' news media, without being forced to prove their accusations, it will continue. And it will to be sponsored and encouraged by partisan outlets like FOX.
.
Remember what happened during the Swift Boat smears against Kerry. Every time one of John O'Neill's accusations was debunked, he'd just come up with three more. The allegations were unsubstantiated but the news media would report them anyway -- in the name of 'fairness'.
.
Sort of like Dobbs.
