Latinos Caliente over Sotomayor

The first day started off okay. After that, things went downhill. And a couple of times (ahem, Ricky Ricardo?) crossed the line. That's the impression I came away with after speaking to Latino groups about Sonia Sotomayor's confirmation hearings. Here's a webstory on the perils this presents to the G.O.P.

One worry I didn't include: how her confirmation might complication the groups' top priority, immigration reform. From Estuardo Rodriguez,

director of Hispanics for a Fair Judiciary:

My concern here is that we end up with a hostile environment for the discussion that we're all waiting for which is comprehensive immigration reform, the DREAM act, etc. Once the hearings are over, I think you're going to have a re-invigorated conserve base out there that will see this as a rallying cry: she's a big concerned because she is biased against white people and we need to put a stop to this before it gets any worse.

Lindsey Graham lecturing Sotomayor about 'identity politics' was appalling to watch. His behavior was completely disrespectful -- as though he was lecturing a naught child.

While it was happening I kept thinking that if he really wanted to lecture someone about 'identity politics' he should turn to his right and lecture Senator "...forced civil rights down the throats of people" Sessions. These peoples' lack of self-awareness is amazing.

    • 1.1

That was supposed to be: lecturing a naughty child.

Why is it that the 'Submit' button is also the 'Reveal Misspellings and Grammar Errors' button?

  • 2

Yes, that hearing room seems to be an irony free zone. We'll see in the next election if or how badly the Republicans have hurt themselves with the Hispanic/Female vote.

  • 3

With all due respect, who gives a cr@p what results in "perils" to the GOP, the Party of No We Can't. The Republican racist bigots and dumbasses are doing it to themselves, because they are the PARTY of racist bigots and dumbasses. This is the reality of the Republican Party of the 21st century. Right there on display for everyone to see and judge. So let them keep it up, I hope they do. More Ricky Ricardo imitations, please.

      I be agreein' James!

All this video be makin' great campaign material fer th' Democrats! I be seein' it now - "Wise Latina" all o'er th' airways all th' time!

Do th' Republicans not be knowin' this sort o' stuff be documented forever?

Keep up th' stupid, mateys, keep it up!

      YARR!

      Amen!

Over the past several months we've seen hours spent on the Sunday talking heads shows on the subject of how to resuscitate the GOP.

The GOP's problem isn't bad marketing. Its that when their ideology is applied as policy it fails. Its that when people see the GOPers for who they really are, people reject them.

      Jay,
We (and you, as a journalist) should be pleased that they're revealing their true natures. Not expressing concern that the truth is going to hurt their chances for a come back.

Agreed, the "'splainin'' line was unbelievably ignorant, stupid and offensive. It's one thing to be a bonehead in private, but don't these guys understand their on TV for all the world to see?

  • 5

And just think, this is the Republicans trying to be racially and gender sensitive and aware.

  • 6

The GOP is ethnically tone deaf. Coburn's Ricky Ricardo imitation doesn't play well in a community that is cautious about the GOP. Electing Audra Shay, who could find humor in a "coon" joke about Barack Obama as the new head of the Young Republication federation doesn't help in the African-American community.
    .
Then we get to Jefferson Beauregard Sessions. Sessions has been given a Conservative Affirmative Action race card by MSM. sessions has a history that includes a trainload of racial baggage. If Jesse Jackson were a Senator questioning a Jewish SCOTUS nominee, "Hymietown" would be front and center, appropriately. Sessions comments about the NAACP and the Klan go untouched.

If a Hispanic child survives an abortion after the abortionist merely severs one of her arms and one of her legs, does Sotomayor think that the mother of that infant has a "fundamental constituional right" to summarily execute that Hispanic infant outside of her womb, and if so, where in the actual U.S. Constitution (as opposed to the so-called "living Constitution" (i.e., the non-Constitution)) can that so-called "fundamental constitutional right" be found.

BTW, does Sotomayor agree with lawless lunatic and political activist Ruth Bader Ginsburg that abortion should be celebrated because it allows abortion enthusiasts like Ginsburg to prevent the "growth in populations that we don't want to have too many of"? Also, do the "populations that we don't want to have too many of" mentioned by Ginsburg include Hispanics?

Jay, you may want to change that title. In context, it has the connotation of, shall we say...hot and bothered.

And maybe they are. But its not quite what you meant.

    • 8.1

      True!

I were makin' th' same mistake in Mexico at a restaurant, desirin' t' have a window opened 'cause it was hot inside th' buildin', and instead conveyin' t' th' waiter tha' our party o' 8 were "hot", in th' other sense o' th' word!

I would'a continued tha' I were "muy embarrasada", bu' a' least, thank th' Lord, I were knowin' enough not t' be sayin' THA'!!!

      Arrgh!

    • 8.2

I've got to agree with you there. I got the joke of the title, and I'm a Puerto Rican girl myself, but others might be more inclined to say it's not proper.

  • 9

My comment should read Conservative Affirmative Action "not to be questioned about race" card.

As Ben Sargent rightly points out: nothing brings out their tender, vulnerable side like someone questioning the natural supremacy of white males...

    • 10.1

It is well know that only white, Christian, Southern males are incapable of prejudice and that they are never influenced by their heritage and upbringing.

Accordingly, they are the only ones fit to serve on the Supreme Court since their decisions will always be inherently unbiased.

From day one I believed that her confirmation was a lock and the only open question was how much would republicans hurt themselves.

    I have not been disappointed.

  • 12

Good article Jay. Now if you could just see how soft you were on Palin....

The idea of Lindsey Graham suggesting Sotomayor needs to consider her temperament when he wanted the most out of control hothead in the senate to be president is incomprehensible and ludicrous. Doesn't he think any of us have a memory?

  • 13

After all, Sonia Sotomayor never crashed five American planes while promoting herself based on daddy's influence..... But hey, she was only a wise Latina, not a petulant white daddy's boy.

  • 14

memo to Sen. Lindsey Graham -
DUDE, you let me down big time. Stop pandering to the base and follow your heart already. It's faith and feelings, not facts, that drive your party, yes? You're supposed to get up, walk over to her table past all the cameras, get down on one knee and say, "Judge Sotomayor, let's get to the heart of the matter. I like you. Will you marry me?" Now you've ruined it. I'm voting Democratic now.

    • 14.1

Lindsay getting married to anyone, let alone Sonia Sotomayor, is unlikely, dear. He's what they call a "confirmed bachelor."

    • 14.2

Thanks! my bad, oops. I didn't want storyline to get stalled here but will make sure the facts are straight from now on.

    • 14.3

      That weren't a pun...facts bein' straight...ri'?

      arrgh!

    • 14.4

My good friend works in SC politics and assures me that Lindsey Graham's 'wide stance' is an open secret round those parts.

    • 14.5

No' tha' there be anythin' wrong wi' tha'...just can't be tha' an' be a family-values Republican Senator, too.

Enough, me hearties - le's no' be goin' 'ere.

      arrgh.

    Kathy, great point.

I would also love Graham or any of these "temperament" critics to please name one powerful women who is not routinely called a b---h.
