G8+5+1+5+The Silly Silly Of Diplomatic Silliness

In another dispatch from L'Aquila, Italy, Jeff Israely and I have a new TIME.com piece about the waning importance of the G8+5+1+5, and silliest math equation in international diplomacy.

We have also posted a piece about the Silvio Berlusconi factor--what Jose Saramago calls the "Thing"--which lingers over the G8 (+etc.) proceedings.

    Dear Pirate

    Forza Berlusconi! Forza Italia!

    Sincerely,

Lots of good stuff here Michael. You are certainly earning your keep on this trip. Plus, educational. Frankly, I had no idea that Italy had a President, I thought Silvio was it. I also liked your perspective on those G-whatever meetings. The Pope one was good as well. Thanks.

More than anything, it is refreshing for a White House Press Correspondent to be filing multiple reports about what the President is doing and why it may or may not matter. That isn't something that we Americans see very often, whut with the irrelevant and superficial gotchas and the narcissism and petulance when some little two year old didn't get to ask a question when it was his turn that has been dominating our White House coverage since January.

I hope you will keep up this good work, doing what WHPCs are supposed to be doing, which is reporting on what the President is doing, and why it matters, or not.

MS: I've enjoyed your reporting on the trip. I especially like the background pieces.

Well, it's silly if you focus your attention on sheer numerals. Your story seems to describe a G-8+5+1+3+17+4 if I parse it correctly, so I guess we can agree if we create a silly construct we can call it silly; see tautology.

If those nations participating (whatever the number) are there only to discuss who's to participate in the discussions, you're onto something. If there are actual issues being addressed we wouldn't know it, at least from the first linked piece – unless, of course, this is a very long way of saying we have to pay attention to more of the world.

[An Emily Litella moment] Now that I think of it, that last possibility would come as a shock to many of the Congressional Insular Caucus and their echo chamber. Never mind.

FO, a careful reading of Michael's piece tells us that the G*8* in this day and age is unable to seriously address current pressing international issues because the original construct is too exclusive, thus the diplomatic inviting of additional world players to address world hunger, global warming (er, "climate change) etc etc. Sure, it isn't an extensive treatise, but what the hay. These things rarely result in huge sweeping changes. That's for the grunts to work out. It's all about sweeping statements of warm feelings amongst teh world players.

Have there really been zero comments for the last 90 minutes?

I'm scared of the new format. I will need time to adjust.

PD, we need Karen to give us a Friday afternoon posting.
Or AS to give us another open thread.

  • 9

With Obama meeting the Pope, i'm surprised AS isn't all over the place.

On a formating note - Highlight existing text is a problem. It can be done, but it doesn't behave in a consistent manner.

As one who c/p's routinely, its a PITA...

PD, on highlighting -- another reason I vote for the name, date, time of the commenter to the left above the comment. Easier to highlight and copy/paste, easier to skim over trolls, and most importantly, easier to read on a hand held device.

MS, thanks for good article / points. More countries do have more to add to the playing field. Raise the number to 22 + one rotating "leader" / host of discussion and you'll have a football team.

There is an issue which the G8 summit needs to address. This is an issue which affects all countries on a global basis, however, for some reason despite the fact that online originating Assaults and Cyber criminality is evidently a growing and critical threat, it is only addressed after the criminals strike and only too soon, it no longer as key an issue as it should be. At least not until the next assault.

Online criminality is not just attacks against computers. It includes vicious and brutal assaults on the person. Online crimes which include wiretaps and activation of phone microphones to criminally violate, illegally track and malevolently violate are FELONIES.

In my case, my cellphone and home phones are illegally wiretapped by Shay Riley of the "Black Female Interracial Marriage blog". My phone microphones are also activated and used as a listening device. My computer is assaulted by Trojans and other software sent by this woman and so my life on a daily basis is recorded, I am criminally assaulted and viciously violated by this woman.

And even though I am a Lawyer, the amorphous state of the law and the lack of knowledge and information on the part of Law enforcement and even Technology reporters have enabled this woman continue her crimes with impunity.

It is unconscionable that tools which expose children and unwitting adults to unimaginable horrific danger are left unaddressed.

Pedophiles and other Predators like this woman, Shay Riley aka Evia Moore of the "Black Womens Interelationship Circle" have tools at their disposal to track, criminally stalk and brutally destroy children and adults alike who are unaware of the availability of technology and tools with which they can be stalked, raped and even killed.

Shay Riley of the "Black Female Interracial Blog" (she can be viewed on the sitee http://www.akbarshabazz.com) is so adroit in her criminality that she deceived the Associated Press in a 2007 interview for an article which sought to highlight the increased number of Interracial Marriages between Black women and white men. Yet despite her claims, her husband is a Black Nigerian male criminal.
For fodder, she uses illegal taps of unwitting and innocent law abiding folk.

The extent of criminality that is being committed against me and other law abiding folk, is unprecedented. These online criminals trail you from site to site (as in my case) using many numerous aliases as different commenters in an attempt to deflect the authentic and important issues you address.

Altering legitimate sites, breaking into the phones of reporters who try to investigate these crimes and deflecting attention from themselves by creating fabricated sites and aliases should not be a deterrent to investigating and apprehending Felons like Shay Riley of the "Black Interracial Marriage Blog" and other online Predators of her ilk.

Investigating online Felons like Shay Riley of the "Black Female Interracial Marriage blog" is a process which has to be sustained and vigorous because these on line Felons specialize in online subterfuge, deceit and the vilest form of prevarication.

I sincerely hope the next G8 Summit will address the state of criminality on Internet, Online Domestic terrorists and the effects of crimes against Law abiding Americans, people like me who are innocent users of the web and whose cellphones and lives become co opted by the growing numbers of Internet Felons, Pedophiles and Predators like Shay Riley aka Evia Moore aka Halima Sal Andersen of the "Black Female Interracial Marriage blog".

Have you considered taking your concerns to the folks at the Borgen Project?
