Re: The Crowds In Ghana

Ah, the memories! I was with Clinton that day in Ghana as well. It was a day--and a trip--that I still regard as among the most amazing experiences I have ever had. We didn't have this blog back then, but I was able to find one of my dispatches here.

I envy you this one, Michael. Have a great time.

A beautiful story, KT. Did you ever go back? I'm hoping MS will post details of his trip there outside of the official stuff. Have the local's perceptions of US changed so much (thx to past 8 years) vs. the time you were there? Certainly individual “stars” always draw affection, from Clinton and Obama to Jolie. But for overall imagery, has there been an “innocence lost”, or was that ever there – we've always been viewed through a neutral lens?

KT, I'm struck reading your story that there is so much positive. I'd forgotten that articles could be like that.

what I mean by that is that it seems we seldom allow ourselves such a positive view of any politician now. Sounds like the "olden days."

1998, what a blast from the past! I was a month shy of completing grad school, soaking up that sweet San Diego sun.

Was reading this BBC "Have Your Say" the other day, which is always interesting given their commentariat's international scope.

And KT, is Sheriff Shefik on the case or what? Page numbers!?

K-Tum: It sounds like you witnessed that, "...one woman had to be saved from being trampled by the president himself...".
...Help the Swamp: did he save her, or almost trample her? Inquiring minds need to know!

Q: The American embassy bombings occurred about a month after this visit. Were there any indications of impending violence?

Q: Clinton "...apologized for slavery...apologized for the support Washington gave dictators and kleptocrats... apologized for the failure of the "international community" to act quickly enough in the Rwandan genocide..."
...Was this called Clinton's "apology tour"? What do you make of President Obama's recent European trip being characterized as such?

This was such a fantastic read. Thank you.

The $64.00 question remains: When is Africa going to get off the Dime and come forward fully into the 21st Century? All of the earlier exuses no longer apply.
