We Don't Have Nixon To Kick Around Anymore
But, even posthumously, the former president continues to kick himself.
From the new Nixon tapes, just released, per the New York Times, recorded on January 23, 1973:
Nixon worried that greater access to abortions would foster “permissiveness,” and said that “it breaks the family.” But he also saw a need for abortion in some cases — like interracial pregnancies, he said. “There are times when an abortion is necessary. I know that. When you have a black and a white,” he told an aide, before adding, “Or a rape.”
Listen to the tape here.
UPDATE: And yet, Swampland kicks and kicks again. Karen posted here on this same jewel yesterday.

I have seen this post before. Here. On this blog. Rinse and repeat?
-
2
I think the fact that Saint Reagan was a fan of the "Saturday Night Massacre" is the biggest revelation.

MS:
.
Did you go to Argentoony with Sanford or something?
.
We already done dood this one! -

Doing something Karen Tumulty already did better, down to the quote. Way to go, tiger.

Michael – your employer (you know, the organization that pays you to know what's going on) has this thing on the Internets – it's called a "blog," which, I believe, is short for "weblog." it's called "Swampland." You might check it out sometime.
-

Yer just now realizin' KT already did this, Michael, me lad?
.
Ye must a' been so deep up yer own arse admirin' th' feisty WH press corps tha' other dealin' in th' world totally slipped by ye, matey!
.
Arrgh! -

Folks like to forget. That thinking was totally within the Overton window at the time. (Not necessarily the abortion part, but the taboo against interracial sex, let alone marriage). We can point and laugh now, but if that tape had come out at the time, he would have had, if not a "Silent Majority", at least a large plurality of Americans nodding in agreement.
-

MS, if you repeat a post verbatim, you may as well write it from a different perspective. Something like, see how repressive and bigoted Nixon's words sound today? That's exactly how those who oppose gay marraige will sound in 30 years.

"And yet, Swampland kicks and kicks again."
.
That's because we love you, MS.

Call it tough love... -

Scherer,
.
How's about a post on that jerkoff Milbank and his factually-challenged column. Arianna is taking tuh boyz to task for lying and being childish once again. What's your take on the Pitney question?
.
Oh! And this!

.
Does this embarrass you at all, being a resident WHPC? Wonder what the ex-WHPC'ers think about their buddy Dana. Hmmm. -
12
Or, as Marcy points out, the bushies planted a gay 'ho in the briefing room. The WHPC at the time not only didn't throw a tantrum about his planted questions, they defended the fact that they ignored him. "Live and let live" as one WH'ho lectured us Atriots at the time.
.
How times have changed, with Democrats in the Oval Office! -
13
Ah yes, but the current president can say and do the following:
.
1) Call a vicious, racially-motivated six-on-one attack where a victim was jumped, knocked unconscious and stomped while prostrate a "schoolyard fight", thereby minimizing the moral blameworthiness of black defendants.
.
2) Use racial code words, i.e., the "just us" system.
.
3) Use stereotypes to describe rural America as "xenophobic". (Imagine if a GOP politician described urban America in similar stereotypes.)
.
4) Proclaimed himself inspired by a sermon which contained the trite, racist and wrong "White folks' greed runs a world in need".
.
5) Expose his children to the race huckster preacher, Jeremiah Wright.
.
6) Write in terms of "that's how white folks will do you".
.
7) Preside over a Justice Dept. that tosses default judgments against black men interfering with white people's right to vote at polling places.
.
Make stereotypical comments about white people being afraid of black people, i.e., "typical white person".
.
Of course, Swampland will post stuff about 35 year old conversations, and that's a good thing, but when it comes to questioning whether the current president has some bigotry in his heart, not so much.
, -
14
So spob, that must mean you're defending Nixon.
.
Dishonesty and distraction..... -
15
Not defending Nixon in the slightest--note that I said that it was a good thing that Swampland was posting about it . . . .
.
So, PD, please explain how I am being dishonest now, care to dispute anything in my post?
.
Thought not. -
16
Only that for an alleged non-racist, you certainly have a very peculiar obsession.
-
17
let's unpack that comment PD. Judging by the comments in this thread and the previous thread about the Nixon tapes, pretty much everyone is in agreement that bigotry qua bigotry is bad. Therefore, it seems to me that any person holding such views needs to be called to account. If bigotry is bad in Nixon, why isn't it bad in Barack Obama? Does Obama's race have something to do with that? Is bigotry on the part of a white person worse than on the part of a black person? (People make that argument, but is that how the MSM rolls?)
.
I just think there's a double standard in America. I don't see how calling me obsessed or implying that I am a racist goes to the merits of my argument. -
18
I'll just say one last thing then feeding time is over.
The 35 years that has passed since Nixon is a drop in the bucket. Routine lynchings, Voters suppression, shoot to kill orders are all things that have happened during my lifetime. You may really resent that minorities can use language that would raise eyebrows among white people today, but we can all thank our lucky stars that we've reached the point where eyebrows are raised. As far as actual damage that's been done and is still happening, you're dreams of absolute parity is a pipe dream.
.
You're role as a poor oppressed white person is laughable. You're really just mad that you don't get to say what you really think with impunity. -
19
Never said I was oppressed; just said that there are double-standards. Why is that soooooo hard to admit? And is questioning St. Barack's bona fides on race somehow off base?
.
You can call me a racist, but you cannot refute my arguments. Loser. -
20
by the way, PD, since you've referred to "feeding time", please explain how my comment in this thread is trollish. Can you?
-
21
Come on guys . . . . If I am so stupid, why can't you deal?
-
22
please explain how my comment in this thread is trollish. Can you
.
spob,
.
Just went and read the definiition of "troll" on WikiPedia and found the folowing:a troll is someone who posts controversial, inflammatory, irrelevant, or off-topic messages in an online community, such as an online discussion forum or chat room, with the primary intent of provoking other users into an emotional response[1] or to generally disrupt normal on-topic discussion.[2]
You definitely fit description[1] with all of the insults and [2] is pretty well spot on too. We've pretty well given up on getting you into an open-minded discussion on ANYTHING.
.
So, yeah, troll does fit. -
23
How is pointing out facts "inflammatory"? I certainly raise a legitimate point. And, I might add, where are you afguy when commenters here routinely insult republicans in general. Oh, that's right, nowhere.
.
I didn't realize this was the DailyKos. -
24
Spob - Do you see any difference between an American President A) pointing out that rural Americans tend to be more xenophobic than their big city counterparts, and B) advocating the abortion of mulattos (to use the parlance of the times)?
.
Honestly, I'm curious. Are Obama's statements and behavior really comparable to Nixon's? Which is more severe and disgusting? -
25
First of all, vastwastelander, I did not say that Obama's comments were worse. Second of all, Obama did not say it in the manner you posit. Here's the quote: "And it's not surprising then they get bitter, they cling to guns or religion or antipathy to people who aren't like them or anti-immigrant sentiment or anti-trade sentiment as a way to explain their frustrations". Pretty nasty and stereotypical stuff, I would say. Would a GOP politician who said similar things about urban America get off so easily?
.
And vastwastelander, that;s not the only thing he did or said. His casual minimization of the Jena Six assault seems to me that he had little care for the white victim.
