Re: Sanford: The Latest
Karen may be swearing off more posts about Mark Sanford's Excellent Adventure, but I can't resist one more. This line from the AP story about the governor's last-minute Argentina jaunt caught my eye:
Sanford told The State he was alone on the trip to Argentina. He declined to give any additional details about what he did other than to say he drove along the coastline.
I love a good coastline drive, and on a recent trip to South America, my husband and I spent an enjoyable day driving along the gorgeous coast of Uruguay. But that was the closest coastline drive from Buenos Aires--and it required some planes, trains, and buses to get there. North of Buenos Aires is a massive river delta that can only really be negotiated by boat. And to drive along the coastline south of the city, you first need to drive hundreds of miles through suburbs and then farmland before arriving at a decent coastal road. There are many reasons to visit Argentina, but coastline driving is not one of them.

Safe to say this story gets more unbelievable as it unfolds. And yet another Republican Presidential wanna-be bites the dust.

Any plans to return in the near future? -

OMG! I do not care! *sigh*

"ABC's Joe Goldman reports that a US embassy official in Buenos Aires tells him that the embassy had “absolutely no idea” that Sanford was in Argentina. The embassy official added that this comes 'from out of left field -- it would be extremely odd that a US governor would not check in with the embassy.'"

Well, if his latest story ends up being a lie he'll be in deep, deep trouble. And I suspect the media is not just going to take his word for it.
And yeah, the reason to care is because he left with no way to get in touch with him. He's the governor. It matters.

AS: this suggests another story line will emerge by the end of the day. I feel bad for Mrs Sanford and her boys. Their husband/father comes off looking bad.

NICE catch, Amy!

Wonder if wifey knows that...... -

THE place for this story is TPM: Talking Points Memo | Breaking News and Analysis. They even have an up-to-the-minute timeline.

BTW, did you know it's winter in Argentina? -

If God wants to reward His faithful servant Mark with a coastline, there will be a coastline.

California Highway 1 along Big Sur is beautiful this time of year, less expensive to get to, and has cell service.

He seems to make it a habit to go overseas without telling and no one on the staff even making his travel arrangements. When is the last time you've heard of any kind of executive making travel arrangements? frankly, it sounds more like sexual tourism to me...

I would be interested in watching the press conference coming up at 2:00pm. I understand that it was 31 degrees in Buenos Aires (apparently it's winter there). I'm seeing lot's of cracks in his story. I smell a cover up!

He wasn't driving the coastline, he was "driving the coastline".
-
18
Small wonder he tried to turn down BHO. He was getting all the stimulus he needed.
-

Evidently, Governor Sanford doesn't lie well enough to qualify for the Rethuglican presidential nomination.
.
That having been said, he really came clean - no ifs, ands, butsies, or "I was abused as a child." Certainly refreshing after Craig, Ensign, Vitter, and many others. -

CNN Breaking News to my email: S.C. Gov. Mark Sanford -- after days when his whereabouts were unknown -- says he has been unfaithful to his wife.

That's true FT-IF he came clean.

I guess "coastline" is code for "role in the hay with my mistress."

Boy, that would be a lollapalooza, wouldn't it?

I'm no judge of character, but I have rarely seen/heard a more chastened-looking/sounding individual. He struck me as being genuinely mortified, an uncommon thing for a politician.
.
He may already realize that his career is over. -

I don't disagree with your take FT as far as how he looked/sounded.
I just have this feeling there is more.

I wish I actually had an interest beyond the feeling of pleasure at a jerks pain. The German word for it I believe is gesundheit. -

P-NNTO: I thought it was weltschmerz or maybe tappetenfraue, but I could be wrong.
