Jenny Sanford Speaks (And More)

The State newspaper, which has been ahead of this story from the beginning, posts a statement from Jenny Sanford, wife of Mark Sanford, in which she discloses that she kicked the governor out of the house two weeks ago, long before his visit to Argentina. She also says she is willing to forgive and reconcile, under certain conditions. Her full statement after the jump.

UPDATE: The State also posts emails reportedly sent between the governor and "Maria, a woman in Buenos Aires, Argentina." Read them here.

I would like to start by saying I love my husband and I believe I have put forth every effort possible to be the best wife I can be during our almost twenty years of marriage. As well, for the last fifteen years my husband has been fully engaged in public service to the citizens and taxpayers of this state and I have faithfully supported him in those efforts to the best of my ability. I have been and remain proud of his accomplishments and his service to this state.

I personally believe that the greatest legacy I will leave behind in this world is not the job I held on Wall Street, or the campaigns I managed for Mark, or the work I have done as First Lady or even the philanthropic activities in which I have been routinely engaged. Instead, the greatest legacy I will leave in this world is the character of the children I, or we, leave behind. It is for that reason that I deeply regret the recent actions of my husband Mark, and their potential damage to our children.

//

I believe wholeheartedly in the sanctity, dignity and importance of the institution of marriage. I believe that has been consistently reflected in my actions. When I found out about my husband's infidelity I worked immediately to first seek reconciliation through forgiveness, and then to work diligently to repair our marriage. We reached a point where I felt it was important to look my sons in the eyes and maintain my dignity, self-respect, and my basic sense of right and wrong. I therefore asked my husband to leave two weeks ago.

This trial separation was agreed to with the goal of ultimately strengthening our marriage. During this short separation it was agreed that Mark would not contact us. I kept this separation quiet out of respect of his public office and reputation, and in hopes of keeping our children from just this type of public exposure. Because of this separation, I did not know where he was in the past week.

I believe enduring love is primarily a commitment and an act of will, and for a marriage to be successful, that commitment must be reciprocal. I believe Mark has earned a chance to resurrect our marriage.

Psalm 127 states that sons are a gift from the Lord and children a reward from Him. I will continue to pour my energy into raising our sons to be honorable young men. I remain willing to forgive Mark completely for his indiscretions and to welcome him back, in time, if he continues to work toward reconciliation with a true spirit of humility and repentance.

This is a very painful time for us and I would humbly request now that members of the media respect the privacy of my boys and me as we struggle together to continue on with our lives and as I seek the wisdom of Solomon, the strength and patience of Job and the grace of God in helping to heal my family.

If only they didn't allow gay marriage in some jurisdictions. Maybe the Sanford marriage would be on stronger ground.

  • 3

Which makes her original public statement that her husband "needed time away from the kids to do some writing" so strange. I believe she is savvy enough to know that many people would pick up on that. Especially given it was Father's Day weekend.

I'd rather see her divorce him than speak. I mean Hillary stayed with Bill, Larry Craig's wife stayed with him, etc etc. Why do these women put up with this stuff?

  • 7

    Hmm ... let's see ... No, still don't care.

@ Art: I think most Americans feel that way, but of course the media will ignore that and try to make constant noise over it. SIGH.

O what a thrill it gives me to witness the powerful laid low through their common moral failings. In my righteousness, I'm almost forgetful of my proletarian misery.

  • 12

Art, I agreed with you, right up until sacredh did that last bit. Now I just want a whole lot more Sanford on Swampland, just to see what sacredh will write next.

  • 13

I too vote for a fresh insurance thread....

  • 14

Oh COME ON can't you guys PLEASE post something else?

Amy Sullivan starts a thread containing 'And it was most definitely a relief to not see the scorned wife by his side.'
Which, of course, is soon followed by Scherer starting a thread titled Jenny Sanford Speaks
    .
To both of you: I don't care! I don't want to know the dirty details. The only issue here that concerns me is that the governor of a state abandoned his job. That may be OK for some pampered prima donnas, but in the real world abandoning your job normally gets you fired.

  • 17

No one could possibly be anymore surprised by the things I post than me. You really shouldn't encourage me.

  • 18

I will pass on reading the emails. The guy has been exposed as a hypocrite with his support and defense of Marriage. Now lets put that aside and deal with the real issues here in that he let the people of SC down by leaving them without an executive in charge and was not responsible enough to put someone in charge in his absence. He should resign as governor because of that and that alone. Not because he had an affair.

All in favor of hijacking the thread and turning it into a health insurance thread say 'Aye'! At least we can get in some discussion of health care options before spob gets here and converts it into a thread about him.
    .
I'll start. If you haven't seen Robert Reich's post on TPM, you owe it to yourself to go read it (Why the critics of the public option are wrong).

  • 20

Does this mean Sanford won't be headlining the "value" voters summit this year?

  • 21

At the risk of being declared righteous ... re: my scathing contempt for the 3 Swamp-bots participating in this feeding frenzy (KT, AS, MS), will anyone else in here not registered as a republican take a vow with me? Boycott, strike--no more posts on titillating subjects. Let the above trio see how demeaning it is to engage merely with Spob & co.

B/C until we disprove her apparently true statement: "nah. the substantive stuff never gets nearly as many comments as this kind of post does" it will not stop.

    Re: the e-mails.
OK - this is now officially creepy. Please make it stop.

  • 24

Was he the one having an affair with Kate? Or, more newsworthy, was he having the affair with Jon? Either way I think Oprah and Larry King have it scooped. Time should really get its act together and find out what the "eight" have to say... they do talk by now, yes?

Uh, Michael, you're the "White House Correspondent for Time". I don't see the connection.

I'm ready to sign the confession. I'm hillbilly white trash. I read the emails and laughed so hard my back hurt. I'll appeal to my higher self, but I know he won't listen. He loves this sh!t. I'm truly almost sorry.
