Oh, The Humanity!

For those who questioned whether Obama's education policy would be any different than his predecessor's, wonder no more: on Saturday, workers tore down the little red schoolhouse over at the Department of Education.

NCLB house

Yes, gone is the structure that for seven years stood at the agency's entrance, always looking a bit ridiculous, like a PBS set that fell off the Tourmobile. The Obama administration considers its dismantling a symbol of policy changes to come and a break from the No Child Left Behind era.

But isn't it a bit hasty to completely disassemble the schoolhouse and ship it off to some government storage facility? What happened to the new austerity? Reduce, reuse, recycle? The structure would make an excellent backyard clubhouse for the Obama girls. Or the White House could ditch plans for a congressional luau and host a hoe-down in the schoolhouse instead. It could even be modified to serve as a literal doghouse for vice presidents administrative officials who speak out of school. Down with government waste! Up with cheesy little red schoolhouses!

Wait, that was an actual building? In front of a Federal Department?
    .
How did I never hear of this?
    .
And you're right, it shouldn't have been torn down, it should have been kept as a neatly encapsulated symbol of the Bush philosophy of government.

They should take a bunch of hundred dollar bills to it, duct tape some real American like Lindsey Graham (who lied to the Supreme Court) to it, and set in the middle of the National Mall and let us all smash it with sledgehammers.

  • 3

I was with you until the hamhanded attempt at snark at the end. I don't know if removing the shed is anything more than a symbolic move but I do know it was phucking idiotic that the Bush administration thought it was some kind of a bold statement.

I'm with Cliff, that was an actual structure in front of a Federal Dept? WTF!?
    .
As disappointed as I am with Obama's domestic policies, at least they are mostly acting like grown ups.
    .
They should ship it to the Bush Library. It symbolizes modern Republicanism, which is defined as the worship of a simulacrum of US history. For a bunch of people who claim to hate the French, their ability to disconnect commonly understood words and phrases from their most commonly understood meanings is a triumph of deconstructionism.
    .
Even in this example they are taking the symbol of the one-room school house, the symbol of how America in the 1800 educated its children, and using it to sell Americans in the year 2000 a bill of goods.

No Symbols Left Behind, sure – but as with present-day religion, the symbol has little if anything to do with the substance. Try reporting the latter for a change.

Btw, right now would not seem to be the best time in DC for this use of that particular headline. Just sayin'.

As pre-fabbed garages go, it looks pretty nice. Perhaps it could repurposed as a prop in a production of the Wizard of Oz. Call casting. We need a flying house!

Get over this story and your inherent anti-Obama bias!

Amy, never say hoe-down and mention the White House in the same sentence. It makes us all think of Monica Lewinsky on her knees in the Oval Office.

It just occurred to me that I havn't seen a Amy posting lately, and this posting is proof positive that I was better off as a result.

Maybe Obama is just going along with the Republicans in a continuing spate of bipartisanship.
    .
By removing all traces of the former regime, he is reinforcing their idea that absulartly, posilutely nothing happened during the Bush administration and it really was all Clinton's fault.

"The Obama administration considers its dismantling a symbol of policy changes to come and a break from the No Child Left Behind era."
    .
Why this is just simply a fascinating and very interesting blog post, I wonder how Amy knows what the Obama adminisration considers this as. Is it mind reading or did some from the administration express those thoughts? There is no link to a more detail story and no one is quoted.

Maybe this is the start of something like the ancient Egyptians used to do. When they had a terrible, disgraced Pharaoh, they chiselled his likeness off of all the monuments, pillars, etc. and just erased them from history.

The republican version of an ideal schoolhouse is being dismantled. No teachers, no desks, no students, no books...just an empty space.
