Massimo Calabresi has become one of the examples I use to defuse my conservative friends' charge that Time is a left-leaning publication. Given Calabresi, Halperin and Krauthammer, Time's just slightly to the left of Tojo.

It seems that "military or meaningful containment" is a prescription for $5 / gallon gas. I don't think that it would work anyway. "Kinetic action"? Sounds euphemistic to me. . Call it a prescription for $7 / gallon gas, region wide war, and a high risk of wmd use. . Do people still think we could tackle Iran militarily like we did Iraq I and II? . If they are, they are absolutely dreaming. This would be a major war, and over what? Better to carefully and respectfully assist the forces of moderation simmering there.

What I find fascinating is how a neocon and a non-neocon describe the same situation. . Compare: Ross wrote several papers in 2008 embracing tough economic sanctions against Iran if it failed to respond positively to diplomatic offers of compromise and engagement, especially with regard to its nuclear ambitions. In a new book co-authored by Ross called Myths, Illusions & Peace: Finding a New Direction for America in the Middle East, Ross argues that tougher policies toward Iran — "either militarily or meaningful containment" — will be easier to sell if diplomacy is attempted first. . and . Anticipating failure, Ross and his colleagues recommended "prepositioning military assets" by the United States--i.e., a military buildup--coupled with a US "show of force" in the Gulf. This would be followed almost immediately by a blockade of Iranian gasoline imports and oil exports, meant to paralyze Iran's economy, followed by what they call, not so euphemistically, "kinetic action." That "kinetic action"--a US assault on Iran--should, in fact, be massive, suggested the Ross-Rubin task force. .
