Age of Enlightenment

Think Progress gives us this gem from G. Gordon Liddy's radio show, a moment where the host contemplates the prospect of a Justice Sotomayor:

LIDDY: Let's hope that the key conferences aren't when she's menstruating or something, or just before she's going to menstruate. That would really be bad. Lord knows what we would get then.

Which for some reason reminds me of how his old boss approached the idea of a woman on the Supreme Court:

Which political party does that represent? I'll give you a clue. It's the one that is only slightly more alive than Nixon is now.

  • 2

    Ahhh the good old days.....
    .

  • 3

Let me see... which current MSNBC commentator also worked for Nixon? Oh, that's right, Pat Buchanon. Apparently he and Liddy are still with the 'Ol Man on this issue.

  • 4

Yeah, see! That's what happens when you put women in positions of power. Once a month they go crazy!
    .
As opposed to Scalia, who's ALWAYS "on the rag."
    .
    What a bunch of morons . . .

  • 6

If nobody else is going to defend the republicans, I'll have to do it.

  • 7

My favorite part of the Nixon tapes was the missing 18 minutes. You know, the part where Dick is screaming at Pat to stay the hell out of the liquor cabinet and Pat was threatening to expose him for having Robert Kennedy shot if he didn't pour her another double.

KT-Remember this? And I seem to remember you gave this guy a pass.
    .

    .
    Bob Herbert did not though.
    .

It's good to remember we actually have advanced from the bad old days. Of course Tom Tancredo is filling in for ole tricky dick now, but Tancredo doesn't have a snowball's chance in hell of sitting in the White House.

Maybe she takes Annuale and he'd only have to worry about her once a year.

I still think it was a mistake on Nixon's part not to take Liddy up on his offer to stand on a street corner and take one for the team. Let's not forget that Liddy is a close personal friend of John McCain. McCain apparently shares Liddy's high regard for women.

It is been my long belief that when you turn the other cheek on this kind of stuff what they say in locker rooms and whisper in the corners at dinner parties about how they really feel about you they will say out loud to your face.
    .
These type of people don't see your non-responsiveness as you taking the high rode or rising above or not taking the bait. They see it as acceptance and the go ahead to say whatever they feel like in any setting they feel like and about any one they feel is not their equal.

kathy: I think you're wrong. I can see Tancredo sitting in the White House. Strapped to a chair, blindfolded and having jumper cables hooked up to his testicles.

A quickie link for those who still think the majority of Americans hate government involvement:

    sacredh:
    .
I've got three pairs of jumber cables. Do you think it would be more effective if I hook up Tancredo, Gingrich, and Limbaugh in series or should we hook 'em up in paralell.
    .
In series, the voltage would have to be cranked up to get 'em smoking, but in parallel, there might be an impedence mismatch and the circuits might blow.
    .
But, BUT! If we waterboard 'em at the same time, I think we could get a LOT more current flowing!
    .
    What do you say?

Gibbs has now apologized for Sotomayor's remark that she would have had more empathy then a what male judge might have, saying "her choice of words was unfortunate..."

When will the delicate Dem commentators, politicians and pundits learn that...YOU NEVER APOLOGIZE TO REPUBLICANS! This just emboldens them to further attacks because an apology is considered weak and wimpy...

Maybe this "niceness" is working for the O administration, making the attacking Republican wingers look bad, but I'd still like to see more strong and simple arguments from the Dems...and no apologies EVER!

  • 17

53_3: Don't even joke about hooking those three up in a series. You know as well as I do that it would result in a circle jerk.

  • 18

I could be wrong (I'm just a man after all) but I thought most women stopped menstrating by age 54!!!

  • 19

Ok. Sorry sacred. Three individual circuits then. No waterboarding, either. What a killjoy!
    .
    Spoilsport!

53_3: I take my duties as a hall monitor seriously. I try to keep things clean and decent around here...but even the sainted among us can be provoked. Waterboarding is fine. It's not torture. It's just good clean fun on a hot summer's day. Watersports are a different ball of wax. Don't even go there.

Karen, I can't believe you did not dig up the Newt Gingrich quote too. He has doubled up today btw. Well, here goes the classic Newtism.
    .
If combat means living in a ditch, females have biological problems staying in a ditch for thirty days because they get infections and they don't have upper body strength. I mean, some do, but they're relatively rare. On the other hand, men are basically little piglets, you drop them in the ditch, they roll around in it, doesn't matter, you know. These things are very real. On the other hand, if combat means being on an Aegis-class cruiser managing the computer controls for twelve ships and their rockets, a female may be again dramatically better than a male who gets very, very frustrated sitting in a chair all the time because males are biologically driven to go out and hunt giraffes.

    .
And then there's Diaper Dave Vitter...

You missed something even more telling from Liddy, KT:
    -
LIDDY: I understand that they found out today that Miss Sotomayor is a member of La Raza, which means in illegal alien, “the race.” And that should not surprise anyone because she's already on record with a number of racist comments.
    -
Not only taking the line of the NCLR as being a KKK-like organization, but immediately equating Spanish language or being hispanic with 'illegal alien'. And then he has the call to insist she's the racist.

  • 24

The irony here is delicious: Republicans who just nominated an obviously erratic man for President are now worried by the prospect of a menstruating woman on the Supreme Court.
    .
KT, thanks for the Nixon quote. I'm so glad I was born in 1983...

  • 25

"I'm so glad I was born in 1983..."
rose83: The 60's were more fun than you can imagine.
