Newtwition
I suppose there's no more perfect storm than a loggorheic ideological narcissist with a twitter account. But ladies and gentlemen, I give you...Newt Gingrich, who has twitually accused Sonia Sotomayor of racism, just as he twitually accused the President of being soft on pirates a few hours before the President got very hard on pirates a few weeks ago. Clearly, this is another case of Newt twitting before reading...or thinking. It seems clear that Sotomayor was merely saying that being a Latino woman who grew up poor gave her something of an advantage in understanding cases that involved poor Latinos. I am sure she would grant David Souter's relative expertise in cases involving modest New Englanders with hermitic tendencies. (And as for those conservatives who are calling this an affirmative action hire, I'd be curious what they were saying about the flagrantly inexperienced Clarence Thomas back in the day.)
But another thing about Newt: his tone sounds increasingly anachronistic. The clarion partisanship seems desperate. Those big, bold Luntz-words and phrases that worked so well in the 90s--patriotism, freedom, socialism, government arrogance, entrepreneurial creativity, flagrant, unpatriotic and outrageous (the latter three usually modified by "incredibly")--smell cheesy in this more sober time. I am simply not nostalgic for this sort of behavior. I used to think that what Newt--a smart guy, who often thinks creatively about policy--needed was an anger management course. Now, I just think he needs a designated grownup who will ground his blackberry whenever these eruptions occur and send the bully-boy up to his room for a time out.

JK,
You're clearly enjoying yourself.
.
Can't say I blame you a bit..... -
2
lol...fun little piece JK. so true. Just to be an @$$ though, its actually not 'twitting'. Twittering is more like it. Or if you're Colbert, twattering would do just as well...lol

I think he needs the useful idiots like David Gregory and whatever hack they have at the Washington Post calling themselves a reporter this week to stop taking him seriously.
Newt is a serial adulterer who lost his last elected office in the disgrace of a financial and ethical scandal. Because of this, he will never wield any more power. He's not going to be President in 2012 unless serving your wife divorce papers while she languishes in the hospital somehow becomes the epitome of patriotism.
If people just treated him with the respect he has earned, he could be writing his Twitters to his fans at Stormfront and the rest of us would be better off. -

Yes, no "confirmogasm" or "carnival[esque]" elements here.
~
And as for this: "I am simply not nostalgic for this sort of behavior"
~
Ah, but you will be. There's a clock somewhere counting down the days, months, maybe years, until faux-liberal "centrists" like you pivot with popularity's pendulum. You'll deem it a watershed moment in the collective unconsciousness, and man of the people that you are, you'll have your finger on the pulse of the average American.

Not to say that it isn't good to have you on the side of reason (on some issues) while it lasts, but throwing chum to sharks doesn't cloud the fact that you're a gatekeeper of the overton window. -

It seems clear that Sotomayor was merely saying that being a Latino woman who grew up poor gave her something of an advantage in understanding cases that involved poor Latinos.
.
Yeah, it seems clear. Unfortunately, it is a point beyond the capabilities of 90% of the GOP leadership (and pundits) to grasp. -

Joe Klein: "Newt Gingrich, who has twitually accused Sonia Sotomayor of racism, ...."
-
Gingrich "has ... accused Sonia Sotomayor of racism"? Why is he being so charitable? Has Gingrich seen what that lawless, race baiting, political activist has said?
-
Sotomayor: "I would hope that a wise Latina woman with the richness of her experiences would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn't lived that life."
-
Sotomayor is a lot worse than your run-of-the-mill racist.

a loggorheic ideological narcissist

I see someone got a thesaurus for their birthday! -

Just when you think these guys couldn't possibly be this stupid...

I am a very liberal democrat but her statement sounded racist. That said everyone has some statement in their past that can be attacked. I would want to know more about her before forming a conclusion that she actually harbors racist views.

jake2008,
Maybe you should just read the whole damn statement then, and not the part Republicans are cherry-picking. It is pretty easy to find. I doubt you are a "very liberal democrat", because if you were, you would know that at this point in history, anytime Republicans open their mouths it is a good indication they are lying.
FWIW Rod Dreher is the only conservative I have seen that actually read the whole thing (and admitted to it); a link to his thoughts are below (and a link to the whole Sotomayor speech):

Newt's designated grown-up will also have to grade and correct his work before it goes out to the public.
-
(Just one recent example of a lazy, lie-filled piece from the Jim Wright of the 1990s.) -
12
Joe, why do you cling to the notion that Newt is a smart guy? What in the world actually gives you that impression? What has he done to deserve that description? Its funny that pundits can point out 100 stupid things that Newt Gingrich does but invariably include the words "he's a smart guy" in each and every instance. Ever heard of that quote from Forrest Gump? Stupid is as stupid does and that means Newt's a phucking idiot.
-

Am I the only one who thinks that Newt perfectly encapsulates all that's wrong with the GOP at the moment?
1) He's a serial adulterer who sanctimoniously champions "family values" while --
2) Flouting a big vocabulary attached to small, tired ideas. We should all be grateful twitter only allows 140 characters per tweet.

JK: "a loggorheic ideological narcissit"? Didn't I tell you not to mess with that Ouija board? You're channeling Spiro Agnew.
-
15
Newt's making some pretty dumb choices with those little hand held devices. Let us all pray that he doesn't start sexting.
-
16
Does anyone outside the beltway actually take in this idiot's twitters? I suspect that out in the real world there is a decided lack of Newtwition.
-
17
Like it or not, Newt's about the best they've got right now. That makes me smile.

More space and time devoted to an opinion of an opinion maker's opinion by someone whose generally paid for their opinions.

I might agree with your opinion of his opinion, but I also agree that breathing can be healthy and falling 100 ft. should only be done when it's absolutely necessary.

Funny how the electronic age gives us instant access to all thoughts of everyone even if they weren't thinking when they thought it. Wasn't that predicted in the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy? -

Is anyone else bothering to note that the event was the Honorable Mario G. Olmos Law & Cultural Diversity Memorial Lecture.

She was asked specifically to lecture about Law and Cultural Diversity. How DARE she discuss her own heritage under such circumstances! -

Not only that...but she's a single mother without any children.

The attention this nasty snake-oil sales gets says more about those paying attention than it does him. I don't mean the negative, mocking attention like this, which he so richly deservers, or even the Fox Nooze that is to be expected, but the Meet The Press kind of attention. Poor Al Hunt, who I had always thought was not an idiot, said this about a month ago:
-
**It's instructive to look at those who were expected to be the Republican superstars when Obama took office. Politically and intellectually, the two most astute critics were to be Gingrich and Karl Rove, Bush's former top political adviser. Instead, both have looked more like opportunistic attack dogs.**
-
Pathetic. That a supposed expert like Hunt would think that these two vicious demagogues would ever be anything but vicious demagogues speaks volumes about the Village mentality. Note that slightly weaselly but not inaccurate construction: "those who were expected.... were to be...". Everyone Al Hunt knows thinks Rove is brilliant and Gingrich a visionary. David Broder says so. And Cokie Roberts agrees!! -

The GOP has a problem when their "new" faces to lead them into the future are Newt and Cheney. Come on...

On the "kabuki" of the process:

As a Democrat, I'm thrilled to see Gingrich and Cheney and Rush emerging as the faces of the "new" Republican Party. With them at the helm, the GOP should be extinct by 2012.
