The White House's Low Tech Secret

Here's a little-known fact about the West Wing, which I mention in my new Time.com story about the U.S. Government's impressive strides into the world of social networking: Most White House officials still can't access Twitter, Facebook, MySpace, etc., from their work computers. (Social networks are generally blocked from the computers for security and Presidential Records Act reasons.)  That means that Robert Gibbs' communications office has no idea what the White House press corps, Karl Rove, Chuck Grassley or Ana Marie Cox are Twittering about them.

There is potential here for mischief. I'm just not sure what it is. But Mark Knoller will probably figure it out first.

ALSO: If you have not seen them already, check out the White House and Library of Congress Flikr photo streams.

I can understand security needs but the presidential records act doesn't make any sense. I mean this is in response to a fear that presdiential records will be erased but nothing ever dissappears from cyberspace so you would think that would be an incentive for engagement in these sites.

"The White House press corps, Karl Rove, Chuck Grassley or Ana Marie Cox"
    .
That's quite a list. Distrusted by much of the public. Distrusted By much of the public. Distrusted by much of his state's republican constituents. And yawn.

  • 3

Well, they know that everything Karl Roves writes about them is a filthy lie designed to hurt as many people as possible, so they've got that going for them.

  • 4

Preferring as I do, sites with managable amounts of traffic, I have no interest in the WH twitter feed. Their Flickr site on the other hand represents the perfect spot for someonle like me to get right into the mix with the comment threads.
    .
My next question is after the Obama administration has had 4-8 years of ownership of these various domains, how will the transition to the next administration go?
    .
And how could you write an entire article about Obama's tech outreach without even 1 snarky reference to Karl Rove's odd ability to erase gigabytes of public records with a single keystroke.

I'll gladly take this over last night's "piece" of hackery about torture.

Somehow, on the WH list of priorities, I doubt reading the spontaneous musings of any of those sources is going to make the cut. Bedsides, when we look back on Twitter as this decade's CB radio, we'll all laugh and laugh.

News flash: like they give an 'eff.

  • 8

Also, they know that AMC will be writing about booze, LOLcats, and Walnuts McCain, so that's two out of three.

Thank you FlownOver! Finally someone states the stupidity of Twitter with an equally stupid equivalent.

Generally speaking, I would prefer the administration not attempt to communicate with the public in 140-character gobbles. The PowerPoint-ization of public discourse is part of what got us in this mess to begin with; we now have large swaths of the media who cannot comprehend a concept unless it has been digested to a seven-word bullet point. Reality is never that simple, and so far it seems as if most of the current administration understands that.

  • 12

That would be "besides," not "bedsides." I suppose one can Tweet at bedside as well as anywhere, but that's one of those finger fumbles that spellcheck doesn't catch.

"That means that Robert Gibbs' communications office has no idea what the White House press corps, Karl Rove, Chuck Grassley or Ana Marie Cox are Twittering about them."
    .
Here is a secret. All Gibbs' has to do is take questions from the White House press corp and he will know. He he he!

  • 14

Not just the White House. When 9/11 happened, it was impossible to send anyone at FBI headquarters an email. True story.

  • 15

Some how I am pretty damn sure that David Plouffe has ever social networking site known to man and because he isn't actually in the WhiteHouse its all kosher.

  • 16

And I am twittering too. Check out the gist of the urgent lunchtime cunsultation between POTUS and his VEEP the other day:

"They sure were diabolical and resourceful in their extreme interrogation methods. Are any of them on the loose?"

Hah, if Paul thinks AMC = yawn, then I'm thinking Paul must = gay. What hetero dude could yawn at that particular combination of beauty, wit and intelligence? Seriously now.

Evidently you weren't here when AMC actually posted here but for those who were we are pretty sure there are blond roots under her red hair. Also as a fellow hetero male, not that there is anything wrong with not being so, I can tell you that yawning is exactly what I would do with regards to AMC.

I know it's off topic but I'm watching Morning Joe...
    .
Why is it that my generation is so darn dense? They are discussing the demise of print media and the simply dismiss the things that young people are saying.
    .
In the previous segment they were pointing to the irony of the GOP losing membership but saying to people that they would not be listening on the listening tour. Per Rush's edict, they should be teaching people to conform to purity. Now I have to ask, how can these villagers view not listening to those who are leaving the Republican party so you can adapt to retain them as a major error, then turn around and listen to Mark Halperin say young people need to be taught to value the newspaper, because they can't take new media to bed, to the bathroom or to the beach?
    .
How can these villagers hear from people day in and day out that we don't want stenographers and then give as a reason for the need to retain the current model that the blogosphere doesn't have the access that the old media has? That the ability to call up the movers and shakers so they can ask questions is enough of a justification for the old model that they don't need to heed the warnings being sent by the decline of customers to reevaluate their product?
    .
Yes, they may be right about the GOP's failure to listen to the people they need to maintain their status as a national party, but these folks ought to not be the ones throwing stones because not only do they live in glass houses, the pretty darn thin as well.

I'm just curious and I certainly don't expect an answer to this question, but there is an out and out brawl going on now within the republican party and the Swampland reporters seemed to be slightly uninterested in covering it.

Michael Steele has lost complete control of the RNC and is now even less than a figure head.

    .
Eric Cantor came out with what seemed like on the surface a perfectly reasonable announcement. He announced that he, Mitt and others were going on a listening tour. Your party is in trouble so you reach out to your voters and supporters and tell them you are willing to listen. Well, Boss Rush did not like that term "listening" so Eric while being interviewed by a hardly unfriendly talking head in Joe Scar had to tuck his balls and distance himself from his own announcement.

Colin Powell said something to try help his party find their way and of course Boss Rush felt the need to bring up race and plan Colin's exit from the party.

"Mark Halperin say young people need to be taught to value the newspaper, because they can't take new media to bed, to the bathroom or to the beach?"
    .
Shows how with it Mark is. You take new media every where. The only restrictions are if the facility won't let you turn it on. You can even do it on the beach.

  • 23

Gunny, the Michael Steele stuff is interesting.
    .
My hunch has been they partially gave him the job for the same reason Bear Bryant integrated Alabama and partially because they misread Howard Dean's job as the head of the DNC (firebrand rather than organizer) and now they feel stuck.
    .
Add to that the "someone HAS to pay" sentiment and Steele's humiliation at the hands of the RNC isn't done.

How did you get all those links posted in one comment?

Mark Halperin says young people should value newspapers because they can't take the news media to bed (shudders), to the bathroom (toilet paper) or to the beach (start a bonfire)? Even I've heard of laptops and cell phones. Note to Mark: Ditch the typewriter. It's outdated. Sorry to repeat your post gunny.
