Fox Snubs Obama for "Lie to Me"

So reports Jim Poniewozik, who also wonders:

It will if nothing else be an interesting test, both of the drawing power of the President and of network TV. Will Lie to Me get an uptick in viewers as a result, or in an era with so many cable options, does one more channel airing something other than a press conference make little difference? As for Obama, it spells out the importance of making sure his TV appearances are spread-out and compelling enough to have impact: if he maintains his ratings, the numbers will speak loudly, and if they drop precipitously, the other networks may want to join Fox next time.

Then again, these are the same programming geniuses who cancelled "Arrested Development."

That FOX won't air the comments of our commander in chief at a time of war is an insult to the president and all of America. Where is an apology?

I'm sorry, but does anyone actually watch "Lie To Me". I don't know anyone who does.

  • 3

Considering how often Bush abused prime-time news conferences as simply another opportunity to rehash talking points, its not surprising that a network might choose to look another way this time out.
    .
I don't attach too much importance over it being Fox and Obama. If they can draw better ratings by ignoring the President, more power to them.

  • 4

At what point does Fox News lose credibility for clearly political acts such as this?

  • 5

So they're just shifting Lie to Me from its 24-hour-a-day run on FockSnooze over to the affiliate "entertainment" channel for this one hour or so?

  • 6

    I like the anti-FOX TV-guide optics, though:

    Channel 1 (NBC): Obama Presser
    Channel 2 (CBS): Obama Presser
    Channel 3 (ABC): Obama Presser
    Channel 4 (PBS): Obama Presser
Channel 5 (FOX): Lie to Me

  • 7

Maybe the news division of Fox is finally bleeding over onto the entertainment division. Or Fox is trying to grab ahold of that 26% who can't stand Obama.

  • 8

They just pretty much ensured that Lie To Me will have its worst ratings ever. If I worked on that show Id be PISSED!

  • 9

Never even heard of Lie to Me. But, it is an outrageous insult to the Simpsons/Family Guy channel to link them to Faux Neus. I don't know if they will air it, but I am hoping to watch on C-span without the puffy hair talking suits telling me what I heard. On C-span, every nutcase in American will wait on the line on their own dime (nutcases are not known for financial frugality) to tell me what I heard.

Yeah, KT, I mean on the teevee. Only too familiar in general, sadly.

  • 12

Lie To me: how appropriately FOX. They lie to us and they are asking "Lie to me". Dittohead Central must be in a tizzy. I have never heard of this show but lying to me is Fox News' aim.

  • 13

bitterpill, again, please don't confuse Fox channel with Faux Neus. Same guy owns both. He just knows how to make money big time. Burn both ends of the candle at once.

  • 14

come on you'll I happen to like the show and I'm surely not going to penalize the cast and crew, that is sometime a local one when they film in Washington DC where the show is set. But I will DVR it because its what I do anyway because its on the same time as Olbermann.
    .
This was obviously somebody's bright idea of a way to get exposure for a show with weaker ratings and if it works good and if not, I don't think it's going to make or break Obama, and I'm pretty sure they also did the same thing to Bush doe abother show I liked but was eventually cancelled anyway.

Formerlyjames: point taken. But Fox has a say in who channels through one of its corporate manifestations. You make a distinction. I note that. But the guys giving the finger are one and the same. For them its dollars in and dollars out, and a bit of politics thrown in. And if they can give the finger, so be it.

  • 16

KT. I'm surprised, you don't usually engage in the pretend adversary stories. If you want you can accuse fox entertainment of being shamelessly opportunistic but giving the president the finger -- really?
    .
I suggest that some one go on line and watch an excerpt I would link but don't know how, you might find out that in this era of csi all the time that this show has a very creative premise and Tim Roth who is the lead is a pretty good actor. also this show has one of the few strong positive Latina roles. I'm not saying that there aren't any other but none come immediate to mind.

I'm with Dee, it's business not personal.

It's not surprising. There's a limit to the number of prime time news conferences the network will tolerate, especially during sweeps. After a certain point, I'm sure they'll all become tired of giving up millions of dollars in revenue for presidential press conferences. It's not like they're denying anybody the opportunity to watch Obama -- just turn the channel to CBS.

SG I liked this part from your link
    .
"Our government is moving wildly fast. Unlike anything we -- I mean, we did the research last night, and we went back to the AIDS epidemic --all the way back, looking at all the different things"
    .
Moving even faster than Reagan during AIIDS? Imagine that!

  • 21

sgw: Thanks for the link. Beck does like the conspiracy theories. Sometimes it's just kind of amazing reading the stuff their twisted little minds come up with. When you argue with people like that you have to keep one thing in mind at all times. ALWAYS make sure they're not between you and the door.

  • 22

    PNNTO
    .
I couldn't even get over how stupid that statement was. AIDS was like nothing we had ever seen. Swine flu is essentially something we have been living with forever but just a different strain. I just wonder does half of the sh*t he says even make sense to him?
    .
    sacredh
    .
And you also want want to keep moving too on the off chance that they might get tired of following you around and will just give up on trying to argue with you.

Fox doesn't want to show the press conference live, so they can edit it to their liking on Fox News later on:

    .
If Fox viewers saw the president's words for themselves, they wouldn't be able to buy the steaming pile of B.S. that Fox News will try selling them for the next couple of days. For them, this isn't just one hour of programming they'd sacrifice, but two or three days.
    .
And face it, once you take away their schtick of distorting the president's words and clutching their pearls and peeing their pants in reaction, what really does Fox News have?

  • 24

    "They've never moved this quickly."
    .
    Well, duh!
    .
I mean, FEMA, or even the Feds, under GOP direction, was not exactly moving at the speed of light when it came to potential disasters on American soil.
