White House Walking Softly on Immigration

The White House is backing away from today's New York Time's front-page story checking in on immigration—the hot button issue in 2006 and 2007. The story pretty much ruined Nick Shapiro's day; Shapiro, one of a bevy of White House spokesmen who divvy up issues, has the up-until-today easy task of dealing with immigration press requests. “This isn't news,” Shapiro lamented to me on the phone. “The President has consistently said that he wants to start the discussion later this year, because our immigration system is broken and needs to be fixed. But the economy comes first, that's why we're so deeply engaged in that now—we will start an immigration discussion later in the year.”

The story lit a fire under immigration groups who sent out gleeful e-mails. "We applaud the White House, Senator Harry Reid, and Speaker Nancy Pelosi for their vision, leadership, and commitment to passing comprehensive and meaningful immigration reform this year," crowed Angela Kelley, director of the Immigration Policy Center (IPC) in a press release. Added Hector Figueroa, Secretary Treasurer of the SEIU's 32BJ union: "The Obama administration's intention to begin addressing immigration reform this year is a solid first step. Hardworking Americans, regardless of their immigration status, deserve jobs with good wages and benefits that can support a family -and we see comprehensive immigration reform as a way toward achieving this goal."

Unfortunately for them, White House spokesman Robert Gibbs in the briefing just reiterated Shapiro's laments: “That story could have been written a year ago based off of what he's said on the campaign trail… I don't think [Obama] thinks it could be done this year.”

"quick fix everything now!" is better then "Please don't F up more then you already have" I guess.

Its fitting that this became a story because evidently none of our modern day journalists can actually read. Nothing in the article talked about moving on immigration any time soon. Jeebus.

Another fabulous piece by the NYT. Good grief, anything for a sensationalist story.
    .
Until the government recognizes that the way to fix immigration is a three-pronged effort (gaining control of the borders, punishing dirt-bag employers who take advantage of and exploit illegals, and reforming the legal immigration process so that it's easier for good, law-abiding immigrants to enter), then this problem will not go away. Bush never got it. I hope Obama does.
    .
I really can't emphasize that 3rd point enough. I am friends with a guy whose family wanted to emigrate from Taiwan. His dad is/was a medical doctor, and none in his family of four had a criminal history. It took them 4 years to eventually get in, after thousands and thousands paid to personal immigration lawyers. No wonder illegal entrance is so alluring.

I've known guys that are up to EIGHT. That's comparable to some of the more xenophobic countries in Europe. Guess they should've just crawled across the border with fake IDs and no rights, like the establishment clearly wants them to do.
    .
Don't get me start on the poor bastards on H1-B visas that were almost forced to go home and start over when the company they (and I) worked for almost went under after the CEO looted hundreds of thousand dollars for his "consultant" friends.
    .
I have a zillion immigration horror stories, actually. If there's anything broken in our country, this would be it.

"crowed?""gleeful?" That's not how she sounds to me. Quite sober and appropriately appreciative.

    Jay:

Thanks for letting us know who's saying what about taking up the issue. Anybody saying anything about an actual proposal?

  • 7

Here are just some of the downsides of "comprehensive immigration reform". As a bonus, Jay Newton-Small has no clue about those downsides nor would she ever ask anyone about them.
    .
Bonus hint: one of the quotes she provides from an "immigration group" includes a glaring error. How many months would it take Jay Newton-Small to find it?

In this melting economy and our lawmakers complete resistance to the US publics policies. American patriots must do the right thing and stop this violation of Federal law. No doubt it will be very difficult because the administration in power, is run by Left wing Democrats. Sen. David Vitter, Republican-LA has drafted S95, a law if enacted, could kill all funding to any city that is infamously branded a "Sanctuary City." With indifference to American populations outcry any city that entertains as a refuge to illegal immigrants. They will have to search the deep pockets of their business co-conspirators, to insure costs for services. We all know the 50 Senators including Harry Reid, and Madam Pelosi who secretly suppressed e-verify, so that more than 300.000 illegal labor, could compete for jobs with American Workers.

Should this law get the backing of millions of Americans, we have the tremendous influence to sever most welfare benefits and government handouts, to anybody who steals into a sovereign country without being processed. In states like California where in just Los Angeles county alone, an estimated 4 million illegal nationals have settled there. The people's safety net is now overwhelmed by families, who have learned to tap every social welfare program available. Legal or otherwise! Even Federal programs-for citizens only-- has been compromised, including low income housing, pre-natal and after birth care, hospital emergency care, where the illegal uninsured, dumped on the entrance to a hospital by pirate contractors and business owners. It is Left for the taxpayer, to pick up the bill. Not just for major injury, but for flue, nail fungus or anything minor--and its free. All the while citizens are interrogated for their insurance card, social security number or money to pay. They get Scott-free care and we get a phone call from a debt collector or end up in front of a bankruptcy judge. California was just one state where local government has intentionally ignored the "Rule of Law." Poor foreign nationals have turned our neighborhoods into littered streets and heinous crime scenes as never before in our history.

Today we have a slender chance to stop this caricature of our laws. Call, write, fax or phone and make your demands real to these pro-illegal immigrant legislators. It seems their arrogant attitude can overrule the will of THE PEOPLE. The president has already informed us that an Amnesty is being readied. The problem is after the 1986 Amnesty, we were avidly promised--NO MORE. If yet another Amnesty is passed, the impoverished outside our lands will keep coming. Taxpayers have--and will be a permanent--THE BEAST OF BURDEN. Taxpayer in-perpetuity will be expected to carry in social services for every lawbreaker. We cannot afford another Amnesty. Every family from Guatemala, Kowloon and Bombay can sponsor all and every relative they possess and you end up paying for our traitorous politicians. Go to CAPSWEB to utilize their petition to condemn Sanctuary cities. Read the facts at NUMBERSUSA, JUDICIALWATCH, FAIR AND AMERICAN PATROL

brittanicus, thanks so much for your insight into immigration policy. Can you enlighten us, as well, what to do about the faggots?
    .
This is a red button, irrational issue, embraced by the right wing nuts. They have dispensed with their previous anti-semitism/anti-catholicism/anti-floridation to focus the meskins and queers. There must be monsters in their midst or they are not happy and have no reason to live. And it is so simple to grasp on an emotional level. Bring out the pitch forks and the torches. Who next?

Shame on President Obama for pushing "comprehensive immigration reform" a/k/a mass amnesty for million of illegal foreign workers when there are over 13 million Americans out of work!

We already passed a supposed one-time amnesty with the 1986 IRCA; now it is time to finally enforce existing immigration laws as was promised 23 years ago!!

If and when Obama starts marketing amnesty, he can expect a HUGE backlash from the majority of Americans who want our laws enforced with NO form of any amnesty! (And we will not be fooled by euphemisms such as "pathway to citizenship.")

Obama was elected to fix the economy -- not shove an very unpopular amnesty down our throats!

It's appalling that Hector Figueroa confuses immigrants with Americans. There is no "immigration status" to speak of with Americans--an immigrant is, by legal definition, a foreign national who lives here on a permanent basis. And talking about immigrants must be an oversight for any union member because technically, the term "immigrant" excludes resident aliens here on temporary work visas.

I think the Obama Administration must address this issue, but there are other crucial issues that cannot be forgotten. The U.S. should be doing way more to address the Millennium Development Goals. The plan to end world hunger has been getting seriously ignored.

$30 billion: Annual shortfall to end world hunger.

    $550 billion: U.S. Defense budget.
