I Bet Sasha Finds the Afikomen
The White House Easter egg roll is getting all of the attention--especially after it was announced yesterday that tickets are being set aside for gay and lesbian families. But on Thursday, the First Family will also host a Passover seder for friends and staff. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but although presidents have held Hanukkah parties at the White House before, I think this is the first seder hosted and attended by a sitting president.
No word yet on where the First Family will celebrate Easter. They're still looking for a church in the Washington area and I'm told that church shopping has been more difficult for them than expected in large part because of the president's popularity, particularly here in DC. The last church they visited, 19th Street Baptist, was so swamped with people trying to get a glimpse of Obama that two-thirds of the church's regular members weren't even able to get through the door to worship. Ronald Reagan used to explain his absence at church by arguing that the security precautions would be disruptive. The Clintons proved that wasn't true during their eight years attending Foundry Methodist. But the Obamas could well turn a local church upside-down just by joining. And they'd like to avoid that.
Which is why we'll suggest it again: military chapel.

Lot more cell phones now than there were six months ago.

Give it six months.

Ahem.
I try to avoid simply bashing the authors here without first reading their pieces and deciding what I think about them.
.
But this is grossly offensive!
.
The Obama's as you point out in your post put a great deal of effort into outreach to people of other faiths and are trying very hard to heal the tribal rifts that are the source of so much unecessary conflict in this country. And you counter with a 'lighthearted' little piece about how they might want to switch denominations because their current one isn't black enough!
.
Shame on you! -

Gay and lesbians can believe in invisible, magical beings too! I mean the Easter Bunny.

Yeah, well, this just isn't working. It's time for the High Sheriffs to shuffle the Swampland deck again. Give Scherer the extra time he obviously needs to be a "White House correspondent," and let Sullivan start her own blog ("Me & the Big Guy," maybe) for those whose interests better align with hers. Give us some subject-matter specialists in areas besides health care and foreign relations, ideally real reporters and writers who can do more than regurgitate talking points for the sake of fanning flames.
.
Please. -

My thoughts exactly, Flown.

This is off topic but I mean really who even pays attention to the sh*t Amy Sullivan writes anymore anyway right?
.
Remember the other day when KT was saying it would be irresponsible to say Richard Poplawski was influenced by right wing rhetoric?
.
Well evidently a write at Time magazine both agreed and disagreed with her.
.
Check out this story

.
Now the writer totally leaves out any mention of "right wing", "Glenn Beck", "FEMA camps", or basically anything that would like Poplawksi or the Stormfront website with a political identity in this country. How phucking cowardly is that? If you want to talk about irresponsible THAT is irresponsible. -

I was going to say I know Reagan went to church at least once because I grew up near his ranch. I remember hearing the helicopter on Easter morning and my parents saying "that must be the president" so me and my sisters ran down the street in our Pajamas to see him land and go in to the church. What do you know, teh google brought it up just like that...

I just had a major "aha" moment. Remember the stories of how Orson Wells went on the radio and caused a panic by reading "War of the Worlds" a story about aliens invading? That is the same thing that Beck and Hannity and Bachmann are doing. And the problem is these people are supposed to be credible because they are on cable news stations or are sitting Congress persons.

"Remember the other day when KT was saying it would be irresponsible to say Richard Poplawski was influenced by right wing rhetoric?"

KT really said that? That's Howard Kurtzian in the level of denial. -

PNNTO

Yes she said it several times and myself gunny and others pushed back hard. Haven't really heard from her since. -

Crazy SG, thanks for the update.
I guess sometimes it's lucky to be too busy for The Swampland. -
13
she said it several times
.
I still say that even though the difference between the paranoid rants of Beck and Hannity and the paranoid delusions that lead someone to open fire at Police are a matter of degree rather than kind, I still don't think there's a lot to be gained by tying them together. After all, the Glenn Beck paranoia is persistent and ongoing and the danger is widespread. The effort to push back against it needn't be tied in to particular and (hopefully) rare trageic events. -

Paul Dirks, please provide evidence of this claim:

" .. the first (?) hosted and attended by a sitting president .."
Amazing: That, eh, factoid can be sufficiently interesting to anyone to be worthy of their time to find out.
No word yet on where the First Family will celebrate Easter.
Strange that BHO would go for that. The way I understand it, the observance has a basis in the glorification of genocide - the idea of specialness/exclusivity of some, even the god creator slaughters others among his own creation - men, women, kids. Terror, anyone?
[That reminds one of the night of the Sabra and Chatilla massacres by the chosen ones, eh?][Why would an almighty, omniscient, eh, presence need to SEE a sign on a door? Crap.]
Hanukkah is a big occasion in USA and the halls of congress are dark while the lawmakers are on holiday. Of course, the USA is a secular state, right? And significant contributions to the American society have come from all, right?
So, fairness suggests that we celebrate none or we celebrate all - with time off for our lawmakers to celebrate Eid and Chinese New Year and the many significant days of the Buddhists and Hindus and ... do Witches, Pagans and Agnostics have big days that we can recognize and celebrate?
-
17
"The way I understand it, the observance has "
That should read "With regard to observances and the way I understand it, the passover observance has "
Gosh! These myths!
" .. do Witches, Pagans and Agnostics have big days .."
include the "animists and druids" into that mix.

Maybe the Obamas can get a fire and brimstone evangelical preacher to conduct the service in the museum of natural history. The girls could sit on the dinosaur's backs just like in the old days. Of course the minister should point out that dinosaurs haven't been around for thousands of years.

A comment I received
----
"massacres by the chosen ones"
Not true.
---
Well, we do not make fine distinctions between those who actually commit the terrorist acts and their accomplices (who give them succor and comfort), do we? -

Uh Amy, wasn't the Last Supper a passover seder? I'm amazed and awed by the vapidity with which you write.
,
I spoke to God after reading your column and he said to me that you need to step away from the keyboard, and stop taking his name in vain everytime you write a post at Swampland. He's very angry with you. I said to him that to err is human, to forgive is divine.Well, he said to me that as King of the universe, he didn't have to follow any proscriptions for humans, he was above all that. Frankly, I wasn't going to start an argument with him, particularly before he had his lunch.
.
Since God and I speak regularly, I hope you take his advice, before there are serious consequences. He and I are on a first name basis. He calls me Andy and I call him God. So you heard it here first. Go practice your ministry elsewhere, or open yourself to wrath of Andy and God. He usually gets top billing, but was gracious to let me go first, alphabetically, this time. -

Andy: Please mention to your buddy that I'm fed up with the rain and snow. I haven't been able to get my tractor out at all this year. On the other hand, tell HIM that sending a hurricane to disrupt the republican's convention was a nice touch considering that the republicans prayed that rain would disrupt Obama's convention speech. What a joker.

From AS's linked article dates November 08:
The old adage that 11 o'clock on Sunday morning is the most segregated hour in America is still largely true, but I'm guessing you'll want to find a congregation that has at least some racial diversity. That will be difficult if you want to find another UCC church, which is, as you know, a predominantly white denomination.

My vote is for Obama to go back to Trinity UCC. I am sure he misses his old "buddy", Jeremiah Wright, don't you think?

cfukara: As it happens, we're right between the NeoPagan festivals of Ostara (spring equinox) and Beltane (May Day). That would cover almost all Wiccans, most druids, and a sizable proportion of those of us who just call ourselves Pagan.
As for the agnostics - I dunno, man.

Haven't really heard from her since.

In her (slight) defense, she is on vacation. She did that polling post on vacation, said she probably wouldn't peek in the rest of the time though.
