The Bleak World of Army Recruiting
If you read one thing today...alright, you're probably already reading Mark Danner on the Red Cross Torture Report. But after that, you really must read our colleague Mark Thompson's piece on Army recruiter suicides in our latest issue. It's a devastating story with terrific reporting and is very much worth your time.
-
1
And Dems like Harry Reid who called the war lost or Barack Obama who called the war dumb have had no effect on recruitment . . . .
-
2
What a terrifically disrespectful thing to say about victims of suicide. Did you even read the article, spooge?
.
These are people, spooge, not props! -
3
The Red Cross Report also says this...
.
"“The information provided in this report is based on the information gathered during those interviews, to the extent that each detainee agreed for it to be transmitted to the authorities”.
.
In other words, did the detainee lie to the Red Cross? Did he tell the whole truth and nothing but the truth?
.
Was the detainee also asked if they intended to kill American citizens? Did they understand that the reason they were "detained" was due to the threat of violence towards American citizens?
.
Yes I am confident the Red Cross was able to obtain legitimate information from all of the 14 individuals accused of Terror against Americans, plotting to KILL innocent Americans would tell the truth to the Red Cross investigator.
.
If you believe all of this crap you are truly insane. -

FT, you know, I have a lot more than passing familiarity with this issue. I spent time in the military, and I am well familiar with the pressures on recruiters. They gotta make their quotas. That's how it's been since I was in, and I bet it was the same beforehand. Well, guess what, many of our political leaders, Harry Reid, Barack Obama, Jack Murtha, Dick Durbin have said truly awful things about either the war in Iraq or the military. And that has an effect on recruiting, which ups the pressure on these guys. I mean really, when a political figure like the Senate Majority Leader calls the war in Iraq "lost", how's that supposed to affect recruiting? Or what about that noted patriot Dick Durbin comparing our guys to Nazis? Or what about Obama's comment that we were "just" bombing villages in Afghanistan (I know that people try to read out the "just" from his quote, but it is there.) This stuff matters.
.But hey, they're all patriots.
-
5
And I forgot the comment that the noted patriot John Kerry made about American soldiers being terrorizers in Iraq . . . . or his comment about being uneducated and sent to Iraq.
.
Yup, a patriot. -

Spob. Obviously you have never been a military recruiter. If you had you would understand that recruiting for any service is one of the most stressful jobs you can ever have in war time or during peace. But especially during war time, because very few people want to join the armed forces during a war. Unless they are drafted of course.
.
Almost all the military personnel (I'm talking all branches) selected for recruiting duty have already proven themselves as smart and trustworthy individuals in whatever regular job they do for their service. They are deemed trustworthy enough to represent the military on independent duty in areas with no basic military support like bases and other installations around. Often times their little 1 man or 3 man station is the only military in the area. Some recruiters liken it to being in a fox hole or outpost in combat. You fight for 30 days at a time for 24-36 months or as long as you can hold on.
.
There is a tremendous amount of stress placed on recruiters to make mission and the stress is not just on the individual recruiters it just rolls down hill and is spread throughout the recruting command. Failure to make mission can mean lost of future promotions and careers for everyone including the commanding officer.
.
On recruiting duty your number one job is to make mission. Someone in your family dies-did you make mission? Because that's no excuse. Your wife or husband is leaving you because you are never home-did you make mission? Because that's no excused. Wife went into labor-did you make mission? Your sick, tired or exhusted-did you make mission?
.
I say this because nothing a politican can ever say will ever be as bad as not making mission. -
7
rusty-do you honestly think the Red Cross is unable to tell if they are being lied too and made to look the fool? They been at this stuff a long time and while anything is possible....
-
8
Gunny, did you even read what I wrote? "They gotta make their quotas." That's the bottom line. My point was, of course, that with Dem defeatism and unfair criticism of the military, the pressures of recruiting during a war were increased beyond what they would be. Whether people agreed with Bush or not, the bottom line is that the Iraq adventure was bipartisan--Congress voted. The Dems should have at least refrained from outright defeatism and nasty comments about the military (e.g., Murtha and Durbin). They did not. And that has had an effect on recruiting . . . . actions have consequences.
-
9
Of course the phrase 'stop loss' has no effect on recruiting whatsoever and all the problems within the military of course fall solely and wholly on Democratic Senators.
.
I'm glad to see that the ethic of personal responsibilty doesn't worry spob and rusty's pretty little heads. -
10
Still trying to reason with the unreasonable I see.

@sg
It's like watching a contortionist act.... -

.
Simple answer, YES. -
13
Who're you going to beleive? The International Red Cross, or a white supremacist from Pennsylvania?
.
Decisions Decisions....... -
14
"Gunny, did you even read what I wrote? "They gotta make their quotas."
.
Spob-Yes I read what you wrote, however I didn't read it until after I was done with my post (there was only 2 up when I started mine. Now did you read what I wrote? You don't have to answer that because I know there is no point in discussing things with you when the only answers to anything for you is to find a democrat to blame it on. No matter how complex the discussion. -
15
gysgt let me now ask you, do you believe that the "detainees" in Gitmo are reliable and totally innocent individuals? Would you have them living in the house next door to you and your family?
.
While I do not whole-heartedly agree with what Bush and Cheney did with these terrorist, and they are indeed terrorist, I do not believe they should be afforded all of the individual liberties and rights of our constitution. They are not citizens of the US of A.
.
If I must choose to protect my family, friends and neighbors, I will choose to allow them to be interrogated, that is plain and simple to me. I have to trust that it is done in the most humane way possible in order to keep the people of this country safe. I know for a fact that the same consideration is not afforded to our men and women in the armed forces or the CIA should they be capture by our enemy.
.
If we had started bombing the hell out of them first, and September 11th, 2001 had not occurred, then I am sure I would have a much different opinion than I have now. But, I have not forgotten what happened on September 11th, but many of you on this blog apparently have forgotten. I just hope when you do get your way and allow the terrorist to become residents of this country because Obama stuck his foot in his mouth and has no other choice, your own family is not killed because of his stupidity. -
16
Gunny, I said that the Dems' comments made a tough job tougher. How is that complex? And more to the point, how is it wrong?
.
And PD, "stop loss", a vital tool for readiness, was demagogued by Dems. Now I agree that there was some bs crap pulled with members of the IRR. But it was Dems who called "stop loss" a backdoor draft, which it clearly was not. -
17
PD, the ICRC, given its blatant anti-Semitism (on full display with the MDA controversy) is not an unimpeachable source of info. Yeah, they're above the David Duke scum, but I don't trust a thing they say.
-
18
My apologies, David Duke may be less scummy than these Stormfront losers. Is Stormfront basically AB guys out of prison?
-
19
"I know there is no point in discussing things with you when the only answers to anything for you is to find a democrat to blame it on. No matter how complex the discussion."
.
And that is the pot calling the kettle black! -
20
gysgt
.
I really hope you mean that. Trolls exist for two purposes, to be heavily mocked and derided or to be ignored. Anything else is just a waste of keystrokes, truly. -
21
Shut up SG. You're the f*(*stick that thinks it's cool to visit racist violence on people. Everytime you've clashed with me, you've lost SFB.
-
22
spob, as long as you can refrain from the cursing/ad hominem attacks I'd be willing to engage you on this point because I think it is important. So far I've noticed that your argument primarily rests on one thing, that some Democrats have made comments that have made recruiting more difficult. Are you then saying that because they have made recruiting more difficult they are responsible for recruiter suicides?
-
23
Amy Sullivan - thank you for the links.
-
24
sg, do you think Lonesome Spooge and Rusty the Klown are just one guy with multiple crappy personalities?
-
25
First of all, deathbypapers, my attacks are not ad hominem. I use ad hominem rhetorically (e.g., the patriot comment), but my attacks aren't ad hominem in that I am pointing at a trait or action of the person I am attacking and then arguing that I am right because of such ad hominem attacks. Second of all, SG called me a troll, and I'm giving it back to that slimeball. He has specifically praised a racially-motivated attack in here. That he is not blackballed in here is telling.
.Yes, I am saying that Dems have not helped the situation. Is that responsibility for a specific suicide? Hard to say. But that's not my problem. That idiot Dianne Feinstein gave away an operational secret in the conduct of the Afghan war. It certainly has made life harder for the fight against our enemy, but it would be difficult to assign blame to her for any specific death.
.Dick Durbin, the Majority Whip, called American soldiers Nazis. He still holds his position, and Dems still support him. That has not helped recruiting. And I am just pointing that out. As I seem to recall someone saying, "Words matter". Well guys, do they?
