Something for Everybody

There was some action today on two causes that we've been hearing about for a while--one that had been called for by the left and the other by the right. On the first, Defense Secretary Gates announced an end to the ban on media coverage of military coffins returning to U.S. soil, a restriction that has been in place since 1991 and became particularly controversial as the number of deaths from the war in Iraq crept ever higher.

On the second, the Senate instituted a different kind of ban, voting for an amendment barring the Federal Communications Commission from revisiting the Fairness Doctrine. President Obama had already declared that he didn't expect a new version of the Fairness Doctrine to be implemented, nor did he intend to ask the FCC to do so. But conservative rhetoric around the issue--which they claimed would be sought in order to hurt conservative media outlets--had built to a fever pitch on talk radio, Fox News, and in fundraising letters. It's actually somewhat surprising that the GOP chose to take such a galvanizing issue off the table. I suppose we'll have to tune into Hannity tonight to find out what new cause will replace it.

    .
Sigh...this is the internet, Amy Sullivan. Any examples to which you can link?

    .
I suppose they figure that with their current unpopularity providing such a long list of issues over which they can feel like put-upon victims, they'd go ahead and take one opportunity to claim victory.

One question: If the slogan of your network is "Fair and Balanced" and you really mean it, then why would you come out against the Fairness Doctrine? If your reporting is always fair and balanced in the first place then this doctrine should not cause much of a change to your format.

  • 4

    The what doctrine?

  • 5

    Amy,

By all means, please let us know what Hannity thinks about all of this.

  • 6

Thank goodness we can all go to bed tonight knowing that the Fairness Doctrine will not rear its ugly head. Congress has restored my faith in the legislative process.

  • 7

Fairness? The rethugs say we don't need no stinkin fairness. I was so looking forward to tuning into Faux Knews and Fatmouth Limbaugh to see how such a thing would be implemented. I remember when it was in place, there were religious and minority programming at ungodly hours of the day and night. I don't remember a political element to it.
    .
Just random observations. I don't really care.

  • 8

Um, amendment to what? Surely you would have capitalized it if it were the Constitution.
The first issue is good news in that we'll finally get to see the bad news.

Duh, the WingNuts have already moved on and opined that there WILL be a Fairness Doctrine, that tricky President Obama just won't CALL it the "Fairness Doctrine". Just know that if you could see me say this to you Amy Sullivan I would be doing the "Dr Evil" air quotes. For a journalist you don't do any kinda phucking research. All you had to do was go to redstate, freeper, or watch any episode of Hannity since Pres Obama's spokesman said he opposes the Fairness doctrine to see that even this bill won't do a damn thing toward calming the WingNuts. Why do you keep speaking of them as if they are reasonable people? At the frikkin CPAC conference today speakers were calling Pres Obama a communist and that he wasn't born in this country to thunderous applause. Thats not the fringe of right wing, that IS the right wing. Jeebus

sg, good point. I had that thought too. IT WON'T MATTER TO THE WINGNUTS. The conspiracy to inject ungodly communist programming will join the list of other lies the rwnuts foist. Can't carry a bible in a public school, the undiefication of god himself, we are the only patriots as you can see by our lapel pins, family (American, small town, traditional, old fashioned, country, etc) values. It is a long list of lies by these good, patriotic, religious folk.

Conservative talk radio whines and worries needlessly about the Fairness Doctrine.
Hannity knows that a mouse is getting millions fr research and that a magic train will run from Las Vegas to Disneyland, even though there are no such plans in the stimulus package.
Jindal's televised description of face to face conversation with a sheriff during Katrina may have taken place only in Jindal's head.

Is Jindal making a trip to Disneyland to get more GOP talking points from Fantasyland?

Screaming about the Fairness Doctrine? So funny.
I asked an otherwise sane republican cow-worker if he gets embarrassed by his party these days. He didn't answer, just walked away.

  • 13

I can now breathe a sigh of relief. RW radio is very popular with the wingnut base. Anything that would put a damper on their craziness is not a good thing. The further out they get, the more voters they lose from the moderates and independents. The Fairness Doctrine is at odds with my belief in assisted suicide for the republicans. Pop goes another cork.

Nice to see the loon libs have made more time to loathe the military.

    Some change, those ones.

    BTW:

Unless the families so approve, NO MEDIA around their loved ones.

The foaming flakes at Code Pinko IS just having to stay used to IS.

    PHUCKING INGRATE MORONS.

Oh my. Conservatives are jamming to CCR, the Beatles, and Smashmouth while a woman dressed as a polar bear hands out ice cream sandwiches.

    Rather narrow definition of "everybody."

  • 18

1st they (wingnuts on the tv) made up the war on christmas. Now they have a new one. That it made it to the senate floor is spectacular.

  • 19

gysgt213: Thanks for the link. It's always good to see a little confirmation that they're as detached from reality as I think. I wish they wouldn't listen to the Beatles though. It somehow cheapens some great music.

The doctrine sounded good to me at first. However if I am paying for my broadcasting can't I say whatever I want? Should I be forced to give alternative views, and what if there are more than just one?

This just in 6 year old boy molested, or just loved a little too much.
Neighbors are outraged, however NAMDA says its just a loving relationship.

    Speaking of abject Republican stupidity:
    .

The 1993 Budget Act was President Clinton's response to the economic and political consequences of mounting federal debt. Among other things, it:
    .
*It created 36 percent and 39.6 income tax rates for individuals.
*It created a 35 percent income tax rate for corporations.
*The cap on Medicare taxes was repealed.
*Transportation fuels taxes were raised by 4.3 cents per gallon.
*The taxable portion of Social Security benefits was raised.
*The phase-out of the personal exemption and limit on itemized deductions were permanently extended.
    .
As you might expect, Republicans went nuts. Here are a few of their statements at the time (thanks to David Waldman):
    .
Rep. Robert Michel (R-IL), Los Angeles Times, 5/28/93:
    .
They will remember who let loose this deadly virus into our economic bloodstream.
    .
    .
Rep. Newt Gingrich (R-GA), GOP Press Conference, House TV Gallery, 8/5/93:
    .
    .
I believe this will lead to a recession next year. This is the Democrat machine's recession, and each one of them will be held personally accountable.
    .
    .
Rep. John Kasich (R-OH), CNN, 7/28/93:
    .
    .
This plan will not work. If it was to work, then I'd have to become a Democrat...
    .
    .
Rep. John Kasich (R-OH), CNN, 7/28/93:
    .
    .
...We have a stagnant economy and there is nothing down the road that makes it look like we're going to have the kind of economic growth that puts people to work.
    .
    .
    Rep. John Kasich (R-OH), 8/5/93:
    .
    .
Do you know what? This is your package. We will come back here next year and try to help you when this puts the economy in the gutter...
Rep. John Kasich (R-OH), GOP News Conference, Senate Gallery, 8/3/93:
    .
    .
Come next year... we're going to find out whether we have higher deficits, we're going to find out whether we have a slower economy, we're going to find out what's going to happen to interest rates, and it's our bet that this is a job killer.
    .
    .
    Rep. Robert Dornan (R-CA), 8/5/93:
    .
    .
The problem with our economy is that there is too little employment and too little growth. This plan will do nothing to improve that condition and will actually make it worse.
    .
What followed was the longest economic expansion in US history and the fastest economic growth in a generation. Over 23 million jobs were created (compared with a total of 5 million during the 12 years of BOTH Bushes combined – much less than the increase in the labor force during those years). The stock market surged during the Clinton presidency with the S&P 500 increasing by 300%. Clinton bequeathed a federal budget that ran four consecutive years of surpluses totaling $560 billion. The projected 10-year surplus when he left office was $5.6 trillion

Cliff: Are you saying the republicans don't know what they're talking about, haven't got a clue about managing an economy, wouldn't understand fiscal responsibility if it bit them on the @ss and haven't learned any lessons in over 15 years? That seems a little harsh. It's true, but harsh.

  • 23

I wonder if Amy thinks Hannity is 'Scary smart'? I guess yes.

  • 24

sacredh: I'm willing to be that guy.

  • 25

Cliff: Let me buy you a virtual beer then. And here I thought I might be the only person who'd rather entrust my life savings to a crackhead instead of the republicans.
