Obama's One Month Anniversary

For a month now we have called Barack Obama president and the baby milestone was marked in different ways by different folks. But my favorite is CBS's Mark Knoller, who serves it up by the numbers.

Update:
Reader Dee points out that it might be fun to compare coverage of Obama's first month with other presidents. I agree, so here we go: Clinton (chaos theory), Bush 41 (mixed performance), kind of (un)amazingly this was the only overview TIME did on Bush 43 in his first two months in office.

"A spokesperson for Rep. Pete Sessions (R-TX) claims her boss didn't know alleged fraudster 'Sir' Allen Stanford. But a picture from a junket to Antigua shows Sessions schmoozing with the Texas billionaire himself. And Sessions' own chief of staff previously said the men did know each other."

Likely changes in the unhopeful event of an Ali Frankless alleged victory in Minnetonka...

    >>> Paul Bunyan statue down. Saddam Hussein statue up.

    >>> Call for state trooper withdrawal from Bemidji, since their tenured insurgent types and Pell Grant dependent Hey Ho Paul Headstone Eats Snow in-laws don't really want us there anyway.

    >>> Minneapolis hookers required to meet 200-pound nude minimum before city certification.

    >>> Political mail franking privileges doubled per linguistic proximity to last name.

    >>> Stellar drug rehabs custom designed by still squealing family relations of deceased fellow Saturday Night Live chums.

    >>> Babe The Blue Ox now referred to as Hot, Hot Babe The Very Blue Ox in 4-color state travel brochure.

    >>> Updated I-35 bridge safety signs to read NO OVERSIZED LIMP LOADS beneath supersized Senate portrait.

    >>> Chevy Chase promises to hilariously throw up on Birkenstocks of any DNC hack within ten thousand feet of his last lousy Vacation movie (now available on HD DVD).

    >>> In the interest of safety, union local carpenter Dickies denim overalls to be replaced by day-glo Speedo wrestling thongs.

    >>> Alec Baldwin designated as stunt double in the event of any unpleasant northern rural county sausage sucking contests.

    >>> Change first name from Al to The Fat Azz Formerly Named Dork King.

    >>> Riveting assassination jokes on Letterman will be supplemented with progressive stories about Communist cloning fairs and bisexual petting zoo stem cells.

    >>> Chris Farley hot air balloon to replace VFW float during annual Veterans Day Parade in St. Paul.

    >>> Broadway show tunes up the old Golden Gopher hole, if you know what I mean

Anyone have a copy of the photo of BJ Clixon hugging that Stanford fraud dude?

I have to make some birthday cards for the kids.

    • 52% of Americans approve of the stimulus bill, with 41% disapproving. And the public is confident by a 54%-45% margin that the plan will result in significant improvement.
    .
    • President Obama's overall approval rating comes in at 67%, with only 24% disapproval. His specific approval on the economy is 68%-27%.
    .
    • Congress' approval is at only 31%-59%, but additional questions show a much more complicated picture. The number for Congressional Democrats is at 49%-45%, while Republicans are at 33%-59%. The Republicans appear to be cramping Congress' style.
    .
    • Only 30% say Obama hasn't done enough to cooperate with Republicans in Congress -- the GOP base vote, basically -- while 62% say he's doing the right amount and 6% say it's been too much. Flipping it around, only 27% say Republicans have done enough to cooperate with Obama, with 64% saying not enough and 5% saying too much.
    .
    • And here's another interesting number. Respondents were asked whether various measures would help the economy -- and 65% say pulling out of Iraq would help.

The comments on the CBS link are funny. They're angry he's using AF1 to travel. Their grandchildrens allowance is being used to bail out wall street fat cats, and this is what their pissed about.

JNS, you enjoy your Friday and no it doesn't always have to be serious. Gunny just loves the action!!

  • 8

JNS, Gunny may have been paying you and your fellow journos a sardonic compliment.

  • 9

Cincy, according to John Boehner and Lindsey Graham the people don't want this bailout. If you want specific numbers I'm going to have to question your patriotism.

  • 10

JNS -- I could be wrong so I wont pretend to speak for my fellow commenters, but I don't think we want a moratorium on light heartedness, it's just that some of these posts seem pointless.
    .
I am all for light hearted and if you had done a post marking this baby milestone compared to where others were at this point in their presidency throughout history and maybe even had a humorous take on it we could have had some fun and yes gained some perspective. But as you chose to do it it just seems that you are pecking Obama to death like ducks.

  • 11

"JNS, Gunny may have been paying you and your fellow journos a sardonic compliment."
    .
I'm can't be sure but JNS may have returned the favor, sarcasm wise: "Why must it ALWAYS be serious?"

2cute4prison: They are getting that from Fox (unless Fox is getting it from Limbaugh or something). Greta van Sustern was complaining yesterday about the money Obama is spending on AF1 and Secret Service detail.
    .
It struck me that they don't think he is the legitimate President. Nobody complained about GWB using the f###ing plane.

  • 14

Art Pepper -- these people think Obama should be cleaning the plane not riding in it as POTUS. don't be fooled by this post racial conversation, not everyone is on board. The post may have apologized about the chimp cartoon, but the fact remains someone created it and published it so the mindset that is not compelled to respect the President exists and you have to ask yourself why?

  • 15

Dee - They did a similar thing to Clinton, but yes, I think you're right.
    .
In a way I'm glad the monkey cartoon was published. It got a very ugly fact out into the open.
    .
Limbaugh's "bend over forward" remark was extremely telling as well...

  • 16

"Greta van Sustern was complaining yesterday about the money Obama is spending on AF1 and Secret Service detail."
    .
If BHO was flying to Aruba to look for a missing white girl I bet Greta would sing a different tune.

  • 17

Yeah, it's Friday – and thousands more are getting pink slips while Publicans look for excuses to undermine the guy who's trying to do something about it. I get all the meaningless numbers I need from David Letterman, thank you very much.

  • 18

If BHO was flying to Aruba to look for a missing white girl I bet Greta would sing a different tune.
    .
Now that was excellent Friday material.

Obama has managed to carry on his campaign luck and remain politically and popularly strong despite the myriad gaffes that plagued his first month.

Even better for Obama, the very same Republicans who railed against his "socialist" stimulus are now touting the many benefits the plan will shower upon their states and districts, with the GOPers gleefully counting up the jobs and revenue to be created.

    .
So you're saying Time whitewashed the Bush 43 presidency from jump street? No sh!t Sherlock.

  • 22

Obama's tanking in the Gallup poll, along with the stock market.

    = LOOSE CHANGE ACCOMPLISHED =

  • 23

How did Skippy's Meat Up with the President of Canada go yesterday?

  • 24

Very interesting articles, JNS. Thanks for putting it together.

  • 25

Cincy, you beat me to it.

It's not at all surprising that Bush the Lesser got less scrutiny than Obama is currently getting. I do admit part of the reason is that there are many crap sites like Politico out there now that exist on shallow harping but still, it's not a shocker that the MSM has been harsher on Obama than Bush. Same thing happened with Clinton.
