Obama vs. Pelosi
Here's the latest from me about President Obama and Speaker Pelosi's relations. There's also a report out today that Blue Dog Rep. Jim Cooper told Liberadio on Sunday that he got “quiet encouragement” from Obama's staff to organize a letter signed by 55 House Dems criticizing Pelosi for not putting the stimulus through regular order.
The Obama folks “know it's a messy bill and they wanted a clean bill,” Cooper said. “Now, I got in terrible trouble with our leadership because they don't care what's in the bill, they just want it pass and they want it to be unanimous. They don't mind the partisan fighting cause that's what they are used to. In fact, they're really good at it. And they're a little bit worried about what a post-partisan future might look like. If members actually had to read the bills and figure out whether they are any good or not. We're just told how to vote. We're treated like mushrooms most of the time."
I'm guessing that this quiet encouragement was outside of Pelosi's ground rules for Rahm.

JNS perhaps you can answer this. Is Steny Hoyer still breathing down Pelosi's back?
-
2
meant back to be neck.
-
3
Why do I predict yet another monolithic bloc vote against this by Republicans, while Dems peel and peel away to join them....
-

Recanted:
"“At no point did any member of President Obama's staff encourage me to vote against the House economic recovery bill." [Link]

Sssh! You're screwing up another 'infighting Dems in disarray' narrative. -

Andy:
Yes, Steny is still quietly breathing down Pelosi's neck, though they haven't had any outward rifts since she backed Murtha for majority leader.pourmecoffee:
It's an odd clarification since Cooper didn't say the Obama folks encouraged him to vote against the bill -- he said they encouraged him to draft that letter of protest to Pelosi.

I actually do think Team Obama thinks the House Bill is kind of a mess, but "kind of a mess" is an apt description of the House in general so no surprises. Jim Cooper is a douche, and that's pretty much that. You can print that, by the way.

If Obama can fix Washington, heal the partisan divide, fix the economy and force Pelosi and Reid to not suck, I'll be even more impressed with him than I am already.
-
9
@ DeCoursey; "If Obama can fix Washington, heal the partisan divide, fix the economy and force Pelosi and Reid to not suck, I'll be even more impressed with him than I am already."
'
If he can do all that I'm packing my bags for the Rapture. -
10
geez, JNS, could you pile it any higher?
_
While I'm no fan of Pelosi's, the idea that this is her fault is total BS. Obama chose not to negotiate with Pelosi first to come up with a united position on issues from which "bi-partisan" compromise could be attempted. Instead, Obama engaged with the GOP, and gave short shrift to the concerns of congressional Democrats.
_
The presentation of Pelosi as a "partisan warrior" is particularly non-sensical, considering how often she folded to Bush and the GOP. Only someone drowning in the Obama Kool-Aid could make that kind of mistake. -
11
At some point, Pelosi's going to have to put the Country first. The idea that we can use the crisis to push through unrelated spending is one that needs to be addressed. Given the Republicans party's track record, its unconsiounable to give them a valid point of attack.
-

_
PD, what exactly do you consider "unrelated spending"?
_
"Pork" is the very definition of what belongs in this kind of economic package. "Pork" is usually about creating jobs, and often about 'infrastructure' (the bridge to nowhere is a perfect example -- it was pure pork, but it would have created jobs and was infrastructure.)
_
If there is stuff that doesn't belong in this bill, its the tax cuts (extremely inefficient in terms of maintaining jobs and creating new ones) and the big national infrastructure stuff that will take years to accomplish that Obama supports. Not that they are bad ideas, rather they are not about dealing with the impact of the financial system meltdown in a timely fashion.
_
Of any Democrat needs to prioritize the country, its Obama, who has decided that its more important for him to look "bi-partisan" than it is to enact the changes in laws and policies that people want to see. Nobody gives a flying **** in the middle of a crisis -- they want answers and solutions. -
13
Without getting into specifics, I'd say that if there's a difference between the bill Obama asked for and the one Pelosi provided, the 'unrelated spending' would be exactly the difference between the two versions.
-
14
I warned you'll it was coming. The villagers are lose without supervision. Andrea Mitchell, calls it the post Daschle era, JNS, the Democrats in disarray, CC whatever, its all about the health care set back -- can't get done now. Obviously, with media shrinking and competition for attention growing fierce, the new path to recognition is taking down the administration before its hundred days are up.

_
good lord Dirks. Read that back, and tell me that it doesn't sound like knee-jerk Oborg, i.e. "if Obama wants it, it is related, if he doesn't its not."
_
did you really mean that? -
16
If your asking who I trust more, Obama or Pelosi, then yes that's exactly correct. I happen to know that you disagree, but I'm confident that your own reactions are no less 'knee-jerk'
-
17
Someon sounds like a knee jerk Hillborg...just sayin'.
.
Of course this post is meaningless when you consider that this country is facing an immense crisis, namely, Tom Daschle's failure to pay taxes. -
18
Someon sounds like a knee jerk Hillborg...just sayin'.
_
coming (reluctantly) to Pelosi's defense makes he a Hillborg? I'll have whatever you and Stipes are smoking!
_
oh, and here's the kicker. Obama never submitted his own bill. He talks about the "need for" a "Recovery and Reinvestment Plan", but he never sent a bill to congress for their consideration.
_
so Dirks' response is even more Oborgian than it appears, because there was no way to know how Obama's priorities differ from Pelosi's. -

When in trouble,
When in doubt,
Run in circles,
Scream and shout!
.
Evidently some folks have decided not to wait on that second childhood. A little less Village hyperventilating, please, and a little more governance.
.
Thank you. -

How dare Obama leave the writing of legislation to the legeslative branch! He shoulda come down and written it himself! Cause there had best be no delegation by Obama, that would be wrong.
-
21
This is the dumbest thing I've ever read. The house did exactly what Obama wanted, the bill passed and it's great. Not a single Earmark, which is something that was probably hard for the house. I don't think Obama cares what "rules process" it got passed by, why would he?
You wrote a whole article claiming that Obama and Peloci disagree but you didn't indicate at all what it is they have a disagreement about!
Obama wants stimulus passed fast and the house passed it fast. It's the senate that is screwing everything up.
-
22
There are many places where I disagree with the traditional Democrat agenda. For instance I strongly oppose the Employee Free Choice Act. In fact, if it weren't for those pesky Death-Merchants, Warmongers, Constitution Breachers, Racists and Xenophobes, I might even be amenable to Republican arguments concerning Federal waste.
.
Does that make me a mindless Obamabot or is it perhaps possible that I actually prefer his approach to the problems of governing?
.
The answer is of course comepletely inconsequential. -
23
How dare Obama leave the writing of legislation to the legeslative branch! He shoulda come down and written it himself!
_
just FYI, since you are obviously completely uninformed, Presidents traditionally have submitted their own versions of major legislative initiatives to Congress.
_
Now, that doesn't compel Obama to do so in this case. But its pretty moronic to claim that Pelosi is "not putting the country first" because she submitted a bill different from "what Obama wants" when Obama never gave any kind of detailed plan about the only things he wanted in the legislation.
_
But what really bugs me is that Obama appears to be acquiescing and/or encouraging (even engineering?) the whole "Pelosi is being a partisan" attacks -- and while that may work in the short term for Obama's self-glorification, it will prove to be disasterous for him in the long term. Obama needs Pelosi to shepard his legislative agenda through the House -- and Pelosi may well wind up letting committee chairs have their way with that agenda. -
24
plukasiak, I am aware of the legeslative tradition, and I don't mean to say Pelosi is unamerican or some such. Indeed, that's pretty silly. But so is blaming Obama for not following the tradition.
.
Can't be sure about the Obama fighting with Pelosi yet, but if so it is pretty weak sauce. Though I don't see either of them being petty enough to torpedo the other at this point in time.
.
Lets just both agree to hate Harry Reid. -
25
hey sarcasto, I can agree to hate Pelosi too -- I just demand the right to hate her only for the proper reasons!
