Daschle Used To Drive His Own Pontiac

ABC News uncovers this old campaign spot by Tom Daschle. It's a great one--considering.

Update: I credit ABC above. But I am now informed that it was NBC News who first wrote about this ad in the context of the current controversy. The posting on YouTube done by a mysterious anonymous poster named, wait for it, "TomDaschleAd."

    The hog piling accelerates.

  • 2

Yeah, this really advances the discussion.
    .
Is there anyone more enamored of the "gotcha" school of reporting than MS?

  • 3

Okay I'm confused, where were you guys this morning when everybody accused me of supporting Daschle when I was trying to point out that the gotcha tactics was about to take off big time?

  • 4

Thanx Michael. Unlike some people, I don't think there is anything wrong with this kind of lighthearted jab at political hypocrisy just because the target isn't a Republican.

  • 5

Dee – I was right here agreeing with you. I try to restrain my impulses to do "me too" comments.

  • 6

    Screw Daschle.

  • 7

Dee, this isn't "gotcha". First of all, Daschle wasn't exactly nice to Bush nominees while he was in the Senate, so it's not like he can complain now. Second, not paying six figures in tax is, ahem, a big big deal. Third, it's not like Daschle hasn't made statements about "tax cheats" and has not wanted other people's taxes to go up. Fourth, Daschle has a history, remember he got the DC homestead exemption, yet voted in SD.

Here's some more food for thought. The Dems are salivating at the prospect of John Conyers leading the charge against Bush Administration officials. But Mr. Conyers has tax issues of his own. Remember, Conyers coerced staffers into doing unauthorized go-fer work for him. Since those services weren't a legitimate fringe benefit, he's liable for federal income tax on the fair market value of those services. Would be interesting to see that issue pop up, now wouldn't it.

Any Dems care to defend Conyers? And will any Time journalist dig into this issue?

So yeah, Dee, you're in true believer land.

  • 9

    spob and you're rude.

  • 10

@FlownOver -- sorry I missed you, as you can see from spob comments he's still talking apples and oranges.

FOR THE LAST TIME I WAS NOT TALKING NOT ABOUT SUPPORTING DASCHLE -- I WAS TALKING ABOUT THE MEDIA'S TACTICS

  • 11

Once again Dee, you're in true believer land. The media is simply pointing out what people care about. Daschle didn't pay six f'in figures in tax. That's a story. And the media has gone easy on him. Neither the Washington Post nor NY Times, in the days after this story broke mentioned Daschle's comments about "tax cheats", nor did they mention his history with the questionable homestead exemption.

Daschle officially out. IMHO, good call. He was getting messy fast.

    OBAMA,
    OBAMA,
    MEANS
    TAX CHEATS O-RAMA!

    GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO TEAM CLIXON II

Dee thinks the lib media did in Dashole?

Maybe Dee's a Republican after all!

  • 15

"Mommy, why do so many of Pwezident O'Bongo's peeps cheat on their taxes that help support our brave troops freeing the Stalinist slaves in Iraq and Afghanistan?"
    ... ... ...
Timmy, nobody really knows for sure why they cheat so much. It could be a sense of liberal entitlement, it could be their way of getting even for being such moral cowards, it could be a sign of deep shame for their failure to fully support President Bush in the war on terror, it could be a way to get back at the Marines for corralling their constituents in Gitmo, or it could just be that they don't do math.

Certainly, there's somebody missing at the Office Of The Vetting Of The President Select. Likely union, on liquid lunch break since the election.

In any event, expect more of the same: Dumb choices, poor decisions, haphazard planning, spastic responses, and bogus outrage at the GOP for noticing the myriad flaws of the hope & change messiah.
    ... ... ...
    YES WE CATCHYA.

So let's move onto other Dem targets. Rangel, Dodd, Conrad and Conyers. Shouldn't Rangel have to pay tax on the difference between what a market rent would have been and what he paid, since the landlord did not have to rent to him at the rent-controlled rates? Dodd and Conrad got sweetheart loans from Countrywide--don't they owe tax on that benefit? And what about Conyers? He coerced go-fer services from staffers. Seems to me that he should have paid tax on the fair market value of those services.

OK, now, although I loathe Daschle and am happy to see him take another amakudari parachute into the private sector, can you in the media please move on! How about paying attn. to Barney Frank's brilliant riff on This-Week-with-a-Greek. One post, in lieu of a dozen, is more than sufficient.
