Rahm Emanuel
In the new issue of dead-tree TIME, Michael Scherer and I wrote this story on the man who may have the second-hardest job in Washington.

Rahn Emanuel was a pretty aggressive defender during the Clinton years. What else do we need to know? Will he kick ass when Rush Limbaugh's acolytes try their usual bs?

I was enjoying the article until I got to "seemed to have Emanuel's fingerprints all over it": "One less than magnanimous gesture that seemed to have Emanuel's fingerprints all over it: former Democratic National Committee chairman Howard Dean--who waged an epic battle with Emanuel over political strategy during the 2006 election cycle--was not invited to the public announcement in early January of his successor, Virginia Governor Tim Kaine."
This isn't much of an example of Emanuel's misteps, because it's not clear that it's about Emanuel at all. Can't you even get someone anonymous to say "We think this is Emanuel's fault"? Otherwise it's just you and Scherer speculating with that "seemed", which to me seems really weird and unprofessional.

Frodo is doing ok so far. beats the crap out of Fredo.

I'm with Tyler Bickford. I'd like to see the fingerprints, the FBI classification of 12 points, and any DNA evidence that Rahm was involved in this alleged snub. Dean btw was very magnanmous and I thought he got a good seat at the inauguration yesterday.

I'm not sure whether Andy's being sarcastic or not. (Which might just make me dense.) Anyway, I don't care what role Emanuel did or didn't have in the Dean/DNC thing. I just don't understand why Tumulty and Scherer write a sentence like that, which seems entirely speculative. And it seems like it would be easy enough to let someone else make the suggestion of Emanuel's involvement. It's on them to inform there readers how it makes sense to make that claim. I didn't follow the controversy, and the sentence seemed unsourced and unfair.

By the authority vested in me as President by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, and in order to establish policies and procedures governing the assertion of executive privilege by incumbent and former Presidents in connection with the release of Presidential records by the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) pursuant to the Presidential Records Act of 1978, it is hereby ordered as follows:

... Executive Order 13233 of November 1, 2001, is revoked.

I'm with the folks that prefer proof to your speculation. It's not as if the cynical press is particularly good at assigning motives to people.
.
In any event there is a new sheriff in town and I would expect the new administration to flex its muscles and provide us with a couple of examples of what happens to those that get in its way. -- Or did you think they were just going to sing kumbaya until their opposition (including posturing Democrats that present the most problems) gave in? -

Tyler, Andy et al: Point taken. When the Dean snub was initially reported, there were a number of background quotes--and at least one on-the-record one from former Dean presidential campaign manager Joe Trippi--saying they believed Emanuel was behind it. In our reporting this week, which included numerous interviews with Dean allies, they continued to blame Emanuel.
.\
Here's a link:

.
And here's the Trippi quote:
.
//Joe Trippi, who was Dean's presidential campaign manager in 2004 but has not been shy about criticizing his former candidate, praised Dean for his DNC stewardship and willingness to take on the status quo.“He was never afraid to challenge the way party establishment in Washington did business and that doesn't win you friends in either party,” Trippi said by way of explaining the friction.
Getting closer to the point, Trippi added: “You don't have to look any further than Rahm Emanuel.”
Emanuel served as chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and battled repeatedly with Dean over party priorities in 2006. Emanuel, then an Illinois congressman, wanted to focus resources on competitive House races while Dean was more focused on expanding the party's reach into red America as part of his “50-state strategy.”
“Now one of them is the Chief of Staff to the president of the United States and one of them is the outgoing party chair,” Trippi wryly observed.//
.
I could have gone through all this back and forth, but it seems like it would have belabored what was a minor point in the story. The Dean-Emanuel feud, when it was happening, was very bitter and very public. -

Tyler Bickford no sarcasm intended at you. KT, thanks for the links. I know Dean's brother made an issue out of it, too, but I think the "snub" was small potatoes. I think the wording could have been different, and you could have made the same point.
.
@ Dee we've been on the same wavelength. If it weren't for your shopping obsession/fetish
, we could be soulmates! -

Andy: The reason I included that in the story was that it seemed to back up a point that Emanuel himself made in his interview with me, which is that he is going to have to do some retooling if he wants to be an effective White House Chief of Staff. It wasn't a major error, in the grand scheme of things, but it was an unnecessary one.

11
KT -- that's very fair, and I understand. I saw the Rove video and it was funny.
-

Actually, the point that made me harumph was this one.
.
masterminded the Democrats' takeover of the House in 2006.
.
I thought Dean should have had some credit here and I'm not sure it was due to Rahm and the DNC that 2006 was such a victory. Or at least, had Dean not insisted on building up some of the organizations, that Rahm would have done so well.
.
trifecta #6, this is one of the most important and overlooked things. I cheered out loud when I heard it. -

great piece and interview on KPCC ... inquiring minds had been wondering is emmanual would be more like Leo, Josh or Toby.
-

er, IF emanuel would be more like one of those 'West Wingers.'
