THE WHITE HOUSE
Office of the Press Secretary

____________________________________________

For Immediate Release January 21, 2009

Below is a statement from White House Press Secretary Robert Gibbs.

At 8:35 AM, the President arrived in the Oval Office and spent 10 minutes alone in the office. He read the note left to him by President Bush that was in an envelope marked “To: #44, From: #43”. At 8:45 AM, White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel came in to discuss the schedule of today's events. The First Lady came into the Oval Office at 9:10 AM. We will release a picture shortly.

That said, I hope I never hear of a President referred to by number again. It always struck me as a juvenile affectation, like assigning nicknames to all your underlings.

What a relief. I feel like I can go back and live my life without worrying about whether our government was going to blow up the world at any given moment.

Karen, how do you think covering this White House will different? are you looking forward to it?

Time magazine: "First Press Release From The Obama White House".

    -

Actually, the first press releases from the Obama White House went out yesterday. Those press releases were written by the folks at ABC, NBC, CBS, PBS, CNN, MSDNC, the Associated (with terrorists) Press, al McClatchy, al Reuters, al Jazeera, the New York Times, the Washington Post, Time, Newsweek, et al. Predictably, even Sports Illustrated got in on the act. I don't know if the Food Network dutifully issued a press release. Will check on that ....

Even at the end he probably couldn't bring himself to write the words "President Obama."
    .
Not that we really needed it this time, but I've never been happier for the 22nd Amendment.

Those Prez-to-Prez notes should be read aloud to the nation by Casey Kasem.

  • 6

I guess it's reassuring to know people who misunderstand the terms "democracy" and "patriotism" also have trouble with "press release." [pointing at textroll and giggling]

Hey KT, how ya feelin' today?
Any news from the more personal festivities among our comrades?

I'm surprised that the press didn't jump all over Obama when he mistakenly said "43 other men who were president". Actually 42 other men were president. One president, Grover Cleveland was given two numbers because he was elected to non-consecutive terms. The folks at Fox news probably never cracked a history book.

    .
This lack of good reporting also occurred when the year 2000 was pruported to be the first year of the 21st century. That actually occurred on 1/1/2001...but the press never let th fact get in the way.
    .
Seriously I feel like a great weight has been lifted off of us. KT I agree the next four to eight years promise to be a politcal watershed for the rest of the 21st century.

    And so it begins...

Heard that Gibbs lost control over the press room this morning and wasn't able to let any press into the White House. Better get that fixed before the press crowd starts remembering the Bush days fondly.

Somebody on NPR did. I think it was the self important guys on Talk of the Nation.

    Cool:

It looks like the White House wants to put on prominent public display the reports filed by the reporters who will be in each day's small "pool" of journalists following the new president [...] [Link]

ivb you said "I think it was the self important guys on Talk of the Nation." Not to be confused with yours truly ;) .

Well KT, I hope that means you're feeling good today. But thanks for at least trying to party over the weekend -- I'm trying to get some vicarious good out of all the celebrating. My daughter managed to get to the Mall yesterday, but she's underage, so if she did any legendary celebration I probably don't really wanna know.
    Any Atriots out there?

    @Andy from MA:
    .
Then again, there's always the debate that <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Rice_Atchison" David Rice Atchison filled in as President for one day. If you included that (highly contested) argument, there would have been 43.
    .
Sorry. Random trivia needed to be dispersed.

Apologies for the link ridiculousness. I swear I put the correct formatting in.

    Dear 44:
    .
    Good luck with that.

He read the note left to him by President Bush...

    Heh. Text as follows:
    .
New President finds a note from his predecessor: "There are two envelopes in the upper drawer. When you are in the middle of a crisis for the first time, open the first envelope. When you are in big trouble for the second time, open the second envelope". In a couple of years the President had his first crisis and opened the first envelope he got from his predecessor. It read: "Shift the blame onto me". He did so and got out of the crisis. In the next couple of years he fell into big trouble again, so he opened the second envelope.
    .
    It said: "Prepare two envelopes..."

Numbers are for Popes. Not Presidents.

  • 22

Andy, I would NEVER refer to you that way! Neal Conant and Ken Rudin, OTOH...

  • 23

I've wondered before what the contents of the messages have been. Is there a chance that they are in the various presidential libraries?

  • 24

    ===off topic?

Does the order of the pic/bio on the right imply much?
[I just hate to think that MS is moving up in the world - just a smuch as I hate to imagine that KT is, eh, .... Was the piece he wrote here on BHO a few days ago really THAT powerful?]
