The Zen of Obama

Reading this NYT story about Obama's relationship with John McCain post-election, it strikes me that Obama--alone among virtually every politician I can think of--does not appear to hold grudges.

The ability to forgive and forget is probably a necessary character trait if you're going to try to follow through on promises to end partisanship. But it's interesting that this doesn't seem to be just a matter of pragmatism. I don't get the sense that Obama is gritting his teeth when he sits down with McCain or the Clintons or even Bill Kristol. That may not necessarily be a good thing--grudge-holding could be a perfectly reasonable defense mechanism to avoid being rolled by an enemy. But it is remarkable given how often long memories and paybacks pop up in political biographies.

UPDATE: A colleague reminds me that Obama does have in his chief-of-staff one of the world's most intense grudge-holders. So maybe he doesn't have to bother holding grudges himself. I was once told the same thing about my old boss, Tom Daschle, who comes close to holding that same no-grudges distinction with Obama. "Daschle doesn't have to hold grudges," said one close aide. "He has loyal people around him who do that on his behalf."

Umm, isn't that why our country has been so royally f@cked up these last few decades, because politicians treat the country as if it's their personal sandbox and act no better than spoiled elementary school bullies backstabbing each other? Ok, yes the analogy is much, but god forbid we should get an adult who works with other people like a professional.

Let me ask you Amy, do you hold grudges with you're co-workers? Have you gone out of your way to deliver a heaping plate of payback? Hmm, yeah, sounds silly doesn't it? A rational, intelligent, public servant, rather than a self-serving politician - my god, it's the anti-christ.

This ends your regularly scheduled rant at the MSM. Good bye.

He still should have hacked Lieberman's b*lls off.

Funny Amy -- as an Evangelical I would've thought that you already would have covered this concept:
    .
Obama understands that the actions of political opponents or anyone else you categorize as enemies is not personal. They don't say what they say or do what they do because of Obama -- they do what they do because that's who they are. Once you understand that fundamental lesson you don't take it personal and don't feel a need to hold a grudge. You also don't leave yourself open to being rolled because you understand the nature of these people and by expecting them to act based on that nature you generally put measures in place that protect you from their worst instincts.

This is why I became an Obamaniac in the first place. I believed HRC would perpetuate the partisanship level, and that's a self-indulgence we can't afford.
    .
Fwiw I think I was right. Yesterday HRC opened her remarks at an EMILY's List gathering with a comment about how great it was to have a Democratic WH and majorities in Congress. She's right, but the zeitgeist isn't about rubbing it in.

I like Obama and think he is a savvy politician...but this kind of armchair psychologizing is a waste of your time and ours.

    .
Since Emily's List is one of those organizations that Republicans sneer at, I don't think it was too much rubbing it in. This wasn't a speech given to the Department of State staff, it was to generally like minded people many of whom were strong supporters of hers. That comment of hers could also be read as being supportive of Obama and not grumbling with sour grapes.

Joe The Appeaser, er, The One will Move On the terrorists, from Gitmo to Grant's Tomb anyway, as soon as Code Pinkos rents space in the Allahday Inn near the theater district for their treasured Al Cuedans.

Honest to Oprah Book Club, why not house and try them in downtown Manhattan, if not Cuber Cuber Cuber?

Lord knows they've got the floor plans by NOW.

Jeepers Virginia, that was almost cognizant.

How's that Gaza Strip Mall working out for you, this month, so far?

Maybe the new & improved Carter can shuck and smile his way to peace in the DNC's forgotten Mideast, if not the DC schools?

    Oh well.

    FRANK CHURCH HAPPENS.

Um Amy, ??That may not necessarily be a good thing--grudge-holding could be a perfectly reasonable defense mechanism to avoid being rolled by an enemy.?? I know most of us don't live up to our religious convictions, but I wouldn't really expect the religion correspondent to think it's a bad idea to actually follow religious teachings.
    .
But beyond that, it's a good idea. Most of us let our minds get cluttered and our attention get diverted by assorted grudges, resentments, and regrets. Obama apparently doesn't let his enemy live rent-free in his head.

Anyone have the address for the Blago Legal Defense Fund?

I've decided he's earned his keep after all.

I think this is one of those things where people project onto Obama because they don't actually have any idea what he's thinking. So it's a waste of time, IMHO, to sit around thinking about why he may not want to curb-stomp the Three Amigos.

Hulagate you are a perfect example of what I am talking about.
    .
You respond to any statement that does not originate from the wingnuttery in a mean spirited and hostel manner. But I'm not mad at you because I know its who you are. It doesn't matter who you are responding to its always the same vitriolic tirades because you can't help that you are an idiot. Now usually I don't respond to you because I know you're an idiot and even though I don't hold a grudge I would never solicit your opinion on anything because I know that the only opinions you share are idiotic ones. See how that works Virginia.

Quick someone get hulagate her meds, she's late today!

I heard the speech as I drove through central Kansas. It doesn't much matter who was in the audience – if you're HRC you have to assume the whole world will hear it.
