More Security Porn!

It's Tuesday night, which means it's almost time for another episode of "Homeland Security on ABC. As Jeff Rosen points out over at the New Republic, the over-the-top reality show rather hilariously--if unintentionally--highlights the fact that the good folks at the Department of Homeland Security spend very little of their time catching terrorists and most of it nabbing people for possession of illegal drugs or barbecued bats. That's the problem with security theater: if your purpose is to make citizens feel better by simply existing, then allowing cameras "behind the scenes" is really just turning a big spotlight on how little your efforts can actually do to stop bad guys.

Even so, someone over at DHS clearly thought this would be a P.R. bonanza for the agency. The agency has an Office of Multimedia, which acts as a liaison with Hollywood and vets projects that might require DHS cooperation, and it is led by one Bobbie Faye Ferguson, a former actress who once played a hooker on "Designing Women." (h/t: Ed Kilgore)

Of course, Ms. Ferguson's entertainment instincts may be more finely-honed than mine. If the men and women of the Philadelphia Parking Authority can become a reality television hit, why should DHS employees toil outside the limelight?

  1. Amy and "porn" is as curious as Cheney and godliness.

  2. Oh that Amy Sullivan, always going on about the porn.

  3. My favorite government reality show is C-Span After Dark with Dick Lugar. Commercial-free and absolutely filthy.

  4. Amy,
    .
Can you be an evangelical and actually know what porn is? If so, isn't like being an orthodox Jew who knows what ham tastes like?
    .
Amy, you must see the punchline coming.

  5. Thank you, Amy, for pointing out this useless and counterproductive propaganda. I am shocked (warning: sarcasm) that the Bush administration would have prioritized image over substance.

Don't let the commenters here get you down. They don't know that journalists don't write their own headlines. Sheesh, it's like Beavis in here: "She said 'porn' huh huh huh."

p.s. Is "Harvard Divinity School" an oxymoron? (Have you heard that one before?)

  6. Porn sure beats ham doesn't it, Amy? BTW did you go to school with Sarah Moore at HDS?

  7. sqr1 - nice touch with the little crucifixes as paragraph breaks. H/T to you!

  8. Where is Dick Wolf on this? Law & Order: Terror Police sounds like it would work out better than Law & Order: Trial by Jury.

  9. Anything that leads to female suicide bombers on trampolines is alright with me.

  10. Well, for me it's a pleasure to see an Amy Sullivan post I agree with wholeheartedly. Don't expect to happen often going forward.
    .
And as for the Harvard Divinity School, you need to be schooled by Peter Gomes before you start making cracks.

  11. Thanks for this insightful post, Amy Sullivan.

"...someone over at DHS clearly thought this [security porn] would be a P.R. bonanza for the agency..."
    .
    ...Because they're f*cking idiots.
    .
They're the Keystone Kops crossed with the KGB.

  12. Hey Swamplanders, stop beating down Amy on the religious issue and lets just concentrate on the point she is making. Which is quite valid. Beating down Scherer is a national pastime I endorse, he's such a poodle. Even picking on Ms. Small's small postings is fair game. Let's let Amy roll and see where she goes.

This program explains why Dept. of Homeland Security can screw up the no fly lists. It is a public relations nightmare that will come to typify why George Bush has been a disaster.

This is an adminsitration that has become a magnet for the incompetant. And a hooker named Bobbie Faye will show us the way.....

  13. Now, now, Jay, everyone knows that Harvard University is Ground Zero for the secular-humanism indoctrination movement. It's in the Sphere of Consensus. Sheesh.

  14. sqr1 Says:

" .. Don't let the commenters here get you down..."

On the contrary, my fellow swamp thingy, we are trying to prop her and keep Amy on the straight and narrow.

We, the avowed sinners wallowing in the sewers of the here-and-now, want to look up now and then and know that at least one person, Amy, will get to nirvana in the here-after.

Therein lies the hope for mankind.

  15. My fear is that the "real" Americans - ya know, those that supported Palin / McCain - will eat this right up and, worse, beg for more. Or, the producers will fictionalize an incident where they couldn't catch the bad guys because they weren't allowed to snoop on all of the phone lines, all of the time, because of those pesky warrant requirements. And then "real" Americans - cue textee - will demand that DHS have the authority to snoop over everything all the time.
    '
I hope I don't live to see this, and, in fact, I keep pushing 10mph on the treadmill, hoping it will cause my cardiovascular system to explode. No such luck, yet. In fact, I think I'm just getting in better shape. Dam[n]...

    .
Memorial Church is like the Episcopalian WMD manufacturing center.
    .
Gomes is a Baptist. But a New England Baptist. I took a course from him. I read some of his books. He's worth reading.

  17. " ... why George Bush has been a disaster. "

    Is there any doubt?

Did you read today that our POTUS - the leader of the free world, the most powerful man in the whole world if not the universe - actually takes orders on our foreign policy and national interests from a foreign country of Israel?

And their leader crows about it.

That Israel's interests trump the interests of the USA? That in matters that are important to us - on which we have spent time and the taxpayers dollars hammering out an agreement - the USA subordinates itself to the country of Israel? Hey, we don't even prostrate ourselves to those French or British or Russian guys! It is an outrage!

When and how did it happen? Call in the homeland security! Call in the marines! Call in somebody!

When did our sovereign abrogate the solemn responsibility as specified in our sacred constitution? And if he is deemed wanting, should we wait for Jan 20, while irreparable harm is done to our pursuit of happiness and liberty (from overarching supremacist foreigners that cost the unwilling USA taxpayer $billions each year and stampede us clueless into their murderous vendetta.)

Aren't we the ones, the free and the brave, who order dictators of third world banana republics around and throw them splat on the wall occassionally - just because?

Maybe it was all in our minds. Is there a new sheriff in town and who allowed it? Should we invade that assuming foreign country - and do a "regime change" on that cheeky foreign leader - just to show them? Maybe we should let them win their nerve and bragging rights by defeating us fair and square in war ..?

  18. .
Judging by the ratings for last week's premiere, Homeland Security bombed.
    .
I'm still wondering when some programming genius is gonna come up with a reality show called Get A Job!, where unemployed people try to scrape up enough money to feed their families, move in with relatives after being foreclosed on, etc.
    .
Bread and Circuses...Now with 1/3rd less Bread!
    .

  19. the young turks on the CNN report about the use of white phosphorous in Gaza. Better late than never I always say.
    .

  20. grape_crush Says:
" .. come up with a reality show called Get A Job!, .."

It would most likely bomb out.

During the hard times we go for escapism and 'hope' for better tomorrows - big ..
[Oh, 'Hope' sells in these times, right? Ask McCain .. ]

  21. sgwhiteinfla Says:
" .. about use of white phosphorous in Gaza (by the Jewish state)"

Now here is a thought experiment:
What headlines would we be reading and hearing from USA, EU, UN, ICC, the Hague, Joe Klein, .... had the Gazans lobbed white phosphorus or napalm or cluster bombs into Israel's civilians ...

    - or what would we read about the country from which Gazans had acquired the aircraft for their villainous missions of death ...

(And turn down the volume, junior)
