First Press Conference
Well, if the presidential campaign didn't convince you that Barack Obama is one disciplined fellow, his first public appearance as President-elect certainly should have. The press conference was notable for several things:
--he did not stray from or change a single position that he took during the course of the campaign. He emphasized his previous stated desire for the passage of a second stimulus package. He was very matter of fact and not very emotional when discussing the economic crisis. There was no "Don't you worry, now..." component to his initial statement, which was a bit disconcerting--to me, at least.
--he was not lured into any speculative answers. He was properly cautious in response to the Ahmadinejad letter congratulating him on his victory and, by emphasizing his opposition to Iran's nuclear program--and its support for terrorist groups--Obama conveyed a continuity appropriate for a President-elect.
--His answers were crisp and brief. The most expansive was his response to the puppy question. This presages a cool, businesslike presidency. And I should add: His self-identification as a "mutt" was just delightful.
--No gaffes. Unlike Bill Clinton, who opened the door to the "gays in the military" question in his first press conference, Obama said nothing controversial, so far as I can tell.
--Unlike his immediate predecessor, he seemed completely in control.

99.9% of everyone who saw that chuckled at the Nancy Reagan joke.

Least surprising news of the century: Joe Klein asserts that the thoroughly unqualified community organizer committed "no gaffes". The thoroughly unqualified community organizer did allege that Nancy Reagan was "doing ... séances". I haven't watched the lovefest with the Obama-adoring useful idiots, but I'll give $1 to the first person who can confirm that any of the Obama-adoring useful idiots asked the thoroughly unqualified community organizer to provide evidence of the dates and times that "Nancy Reagan" was "doing any séances". Nobody at Time magazine knows what evidence is, so don't waste your time reading transcripts of anything "asked" by anyone from Time magazine.

Rusty - if you can do the kind of mental contortions it takes to consider Pro-Choice, anti-drilling, pro-affirmative action Lieberman a conservative, you might be a member of the Rerumplican Party. And you'd be welcome to Loserman, too. I see Reid's calling his bluff on the chairmanship.

Don't worry early on Obama adhered to the upwardly mobile black mantra that one must be twice as good as everyone else in order to be considred equal. Yes this can be difficult to maintain but you have no choice if you want to rise to the top. By accepting that his standard of acceptance is perfection we will be amazed at his skill set.

Screw it. Who cares what Beck, Limbaugh, Carr, and Hannity will say on the radio? Were they going to present a fair and impartial analysis of Obama but - WHAM - decided to go postal because he dissed Nancy.
If Obama walked across Lake Michigan to talk to reporters, the Right Wing Talk Bunch would say he was mocking Christ.
My guess, Limbaugh, Hannity, et al are soon going to be irrelevant.

As I type, CNN is making note of the the Nancy Reagan seance gaffette. He probably kicked himself mentally immediately. Move on, press.

I think that what Joe Klein was looking for here was something to calm the markets. The problem is that works for a day, at best. I think the best thing Barack Obama could have done was to be logical, which can be calming in and of itself. My concern with the approach of telling Americans not to worry is that they should worry. There's a lot that needs fixing, and it is going to take some time to get it fixed.
.
(Eh, I don't want to put words in Joe Klein's mouth. I have no idea why he found that disconcerting. This is just my take.)

Hammerlock:what's Mitch going to offer him?
A Republican Senate aide said Friday morning that there was little McConnell could offer in terms of high-ranking committee slots, which is why Lieberman is resisting overtures from the Republican side.
...
...
If Lieberman were to join the Republican conference, however, there's not much McConnell could offer him. Virtually every ranking position is already spoken for, and Republican senators who have spent years moving up the ranks might not look kindly upon Lieberman leapfrogging them if he switches parties. -

davemc321...they're not ALREADY irrelevant??? I thought they were...all I hear now whenever they open their mouths is a faint, angry, spluttering sound

On Nancy Reagan: We should note that he didn't set out to take a cheap shot at her.
He was reacting to his own verbal blunder -- saying "In terms of speaking to former presidents, I've spoken to all of them that are living." That got a little laugh -- he obviously can't have spoken to the dead ones -- so then he tossed in the comment about seances and Nancy Reagan.
I'm sure he'd say it differently if he could take it back, and people can take offense if they want, but it clearly wasn't a mean-spirited wisecrack.
-
39
I think the Nancy Reagan gaffette was probably Obama thinking too far ahead of himself and running into cliché: 'living presidents' is probably the right formation, but it's not as if he's been speaking to the dead ones. He's demographically late Boomer, but more Gen-X ironic in that kind of self-voiceover.

I suppose its no surprise, but with the All-Star Team Obama had gathered behind him and the cumulative brain power concentrated in that room, the lingering impression is going to be about a GD seance crack?
This is why we are in the toilet, and why it will be so blasted hard to get us out.

Actually the person asking the question said living first and he was just repeating the question. I just watched it again and it was still funny to me. -

And after reading the comments in the Politico article about the NR joke, I'm even happier we get to watch the GOP implode. "OMFG HOW COULD THAT CHICAGO THUG TAKE A SHOT AT OUR NATIONAL TREASURE NANCY!?!?!?!?!??!?!?!"

Joe Lieberman is Israeli, not American.
Jews are wonderful people. The world's best. And I'm prepared to argue that point.
That said, we Americans made a mistake after WWII. We shouldn't have been willing to support an Isaraeli state in Palestine UNTIL the Palestinians had a state in their land consistent with their 1930 population percentage (70%).

One of the telling moments in the conference was when a reporter (was it Candy?) asked a two part question - he answered the first part, couldn't recall the second and asked what it was, and then stated he declined to answer it. No evasion, no obfuscation, no bluster. Honest.

Suggestion for W: At your next presser, say "Hypoallergenic". If you get it right, you'll get applause. If you get it wrong, well, that the soft bigotry of low expectations.

Notice how they keep saying stuff about Obama not being able to shining Ronald Reagan's shoes? That shows you just how "post racial" this country still isn't -

Yeah calkate, Candy asked him if there was anything in his press conference that gave him pause or surprised him. WTF? How's he supposed to answer that? We all know what she really meant is, "Did you hear anything in your intelligence briefing that made you think holy hell what did I get myself into I want to cry?"
