What Kind of Senate Majority?

Whether they end up with 56 seats, 57, or more, the Democrats in the Senate will control the fate of President Obama's legislative agenda.

And we don't need Lieberman any more. So long, chump!

  • 2

Just the kind of deep and probing analysis I've come to expect from Jay the Carnie.

So your saying that there's more Dems than Republicans in the Senate and that that means they control the legislative agenda? Hmmm, interesting.

Did you want me to click on that link thingy?

  • 3

Incorrect once again. Obama is the head of the party and he will set the agenda. It is true that congress can give him a headache though.

  • 4

    Cincy lives! And rules!

Carney's post is reminiscent of the Pythons' sketch in which Ron Obvious attempts to jump the channel… and, not surprisingly, fails.

  • 5

    Democrats control
    With fifty-six or seven?
    The senate again

  • 6

Jay were you not paying attention to the campaign? Obama didn't just squeak by.
    .
Obama is going to be an extremely powerful president. It's not like he won the presidency and threw out all of those cell numbers. In his speech he said this was just the beginning and we still had work to do. He was talking to his supporters across the country and I pity the poor Senator who decides to go rogue.

    348 Electoral votes.
    54% of the popular vote.

Let me clear my throat and scream the following:

    MANDATE!

    Thank you.

  • 8

Last time a president had a man date, it was hard to get Jeff Gannon out of the White House. Just saying.

So, is Obama a radical leftist, teh "most liberal Senator" running the "most liberal campaign" in a generation?
Or was he just elected in a landslide (following a previous Congressional landslide) in what is still insistingly being called a "center-right" nation?
Because if its the first one, then the country elected him knowing his liberal agenda. If its the second one, then I guess the Republicans are the ultra far right and therefore way out of the mainstream.
    .
I don't think you need to worry, though, about a radical agenda. The truth is Obama at least appears to be a centrist serious about building consensus to work towards a desirable outcome. His agenda enjoys broad support, as Republicans have been outpolled on the issues for years but are preferred in rhetoric. Expanded health care, a 21st century energy policy, mild tax increases on the wealthy- they are coming and the people want them.
    .
    It'll be ok.

David Broder's piece about how Obama needs to do what Republicans want is being written as we speak Jay. You can leave it to the master.

  • 11

    From JC's story (that's right-I read it)
"Now that the Democrats have a bigger majority, there's a good chance Reid will strip Lieberman of his chairmanship of the Government Affairs committee — in effect, booting him from the Democratic fold"
    .
A$$erted, not demonstrated. Do you have a reason for writing this or is it just a hunch?

  • 12

Like I said, if the MSM can't ween themselves from these internalized right wing memes, and from the idea that this is a 'center-right' country, they'll be laying off a whole lot more people than 600.

I'm not sure who it was anymore it was so long ago, but whomever Rachel Maddow replaced in that time slot was pretty sure this was a center-right country as well.

Abrams-cin. He was a mixed bag, at best.

I read half of Battlefield Earth once, but why would anyone read Jay Carney?

Actually that story is out there, but Carney wouldn't deign give attribution to a left blog:

ThingProgress has a nice piece on this assumption of a center-right AMerica too:

    Thanks Cin!
    It's election glow day+Christmas Eve
"Thursday will be Senator Lieberman's "day of reckoning," according to a Capitol Hill paper.

"Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) is scheduled to meet with Sen. Joe Lieberman (ID-Conn.) on Thursday to discuss his future in the Senate Democratic Conference, according to a Democratic Senate source," Tim Taylor reports for Roll Call."

It's more than that, PNNTO - it's my birthday! Whoo-hoo! Best gift I've had in a while.
    '
Other than that, I got a travel-sized bottle of DiSaronno. Anyone else, that would not likely be a problem. But I don't drink. Maybe I'll have to break a rule for a special occasion.
    '
Oh, and can we say with authority, now: Hey, Bush! Sucha! On! This! He's definitely a "uniter" - just not in the way he intended.
    '
And are we placing bets for the way in which Carney "morphs" to fit the new reality? Will he kiss tuckus, or remain hard and bitter?

  • 18

Happy birthday, Mr Nice Guy. I have to say you had a VERY good one.
Jay will obey his masters. He will remain light and right. I can't even work up emotion on the dude.

First night in a year with no nightmares of Nancy Pfotenhauer. If I can prevent Michelle Bachmann from taking her place, I think I'm healed. Read your Bible.

  • 20

I know that Senators are more immune from constituent pressure that their House counterparts but pressure from home is going to include a strong tendency to want to Do Something! This will help with Obama's aganda in ways that simple vote-counting doesn't fully display.

  • 21

Time will right wing meme their way into obsolescence probably.

  • 22

pourmecoffee, Nancy Pfotenwhatever is too busy trying to find Real Virginia to haunt your dreams.

  • 23

Not hearing anything above about the obstructionist Repubs. Did they just go away? Did they lose the 41 minimum Senate votes to obstruct everything? Did McConnel lose?
    .
If the answers to the above are not no, they remain as relevant in the minority as ever. And the remaining semi-moderate repubs are mostly not returning. And The National Review is saying never give up, never surrender:
    .
"Republicans and conservatives will be taking a needed hard look at ourselves. Losers usually do. We must reassess, recalibrate and argue.
    .
But in the meantime, we still have principles to defend and we must defend them vigorously. Particularly in the first 100 days when many of the most objectionable bills will likely be brought up."
    http://corner.nationalreview.com/post/?q=NmVjOTg5M2U4Y2FiZjNjZWQzMmY1MGMzY2ViZTYzZjU=
    .
    .
I do believe that an Obama administration will be better at making repubs pay for what they will do than Reid has been, but I don't for a minute doubt that they are looking forward to being an obstructionist minority.
    .
As Maddow would say, talk me down here.

JC while Time will always have conservative columnists, Time may soon not have readers, or subscribers, or jobs for its employees. This was a BFWOT.

  • 25

@jarais - I've been thinking that the best punishment for Lieberman might be a one-hour public domination by Pfotenhauer on the Senate floor. Big C-Span payday, too. Drinking word: "maggot."
