McCain Campaign Loves the Media -- for a Moment

True, observers (including Karen!) seem to agree that McCain performed well on SNL the other night, but what really tickled the McCain campaign wasn't the senator's comic stylings, but rather this devestating Keith Olbermann parody, that is in fact best summed up by the show's one line description: "Keith Olbermann is indignant and his cat is innocent."

It's hardly a "whitey" tape or early November surprise but it might be the most gratifying piece of news the McCain campaign has received in the past 24 hours. Unless you believe that there's a mysterious internal poll that has them within one in Iowa.

UPDATE: Sorry, sorry, sorry. Finally fixed.

UPDATE UPDATE: ARGGHHHGHHGHGH. I have no idea what is causing the unintentional comedy here. The video that REFUSES TO POST (for now) is here.

  1. Sorry to be the first, but - code error in that Youtube posting.

I thought the first part was too silly - the idea parody is capturing the essence of the person, not your *idea* of the the essence of a person.

But the "special comment" section? That was spot on, and my wife and I laughed out fannies off.

  2. I thought the McCain skits were helpful to him. He seemed so grumpy, angry and off script for so long this campaign season it was surprising to remember he could be this funny.

  3. The KO spot was hilarious and some what spot on. I have yet to see him try to shape what one of his guests say ala Bill O but the rest of his over the top antics were done a tad bit more over the top and it came off well. But you can't unring the bell of Tina Fey going rogue with the t shirts. Yeah it was funny for about 5 seconds until you thought about it. The double maverick also, bad move. When it looks like you are going berserker its not good to give it a name to describe it. From that day forward whenever McCain pulls a stunt people will say "he is pulling a double maverick" relegating him to a punchline

  4. Watching football last night, I was presented with several runs of a 60-second ad in which Obama speaks to the camera as if speaking to an audience of adults. I got nothing remotely similar from Mr. McCain, but did get a full does the fear and loathing angle focused on the Reverend Wright.

A youtube parodying Olbermann is the good news for McCain? OK. By the way, you're doing a poor job of spreading this good news for them. This is how your post looks on my screen...

  5. Mark Halperin just put Joe Scarborough in his place, Im SHOCKED.

  6. oh yeah, the other McCain ad I saw featured a quote from Biden of uncertain vintage that indicated that a vote for Obama was a vote taunting the terrorists to strike us within the first 6 months. Or something like that. Very ominous. I'm so scared.

  7. I take it back. Halperin wussed out when pressed

  8. Not exactly on topic, but important: Arizona Daily Star editorial endorses Obama: "...the ways of the past, which we believe McCain understands, will not work in this new America. The future requires new tools and new expertise." Amen.

  9. Hmmmm....not sure that link's going to work for you. I got there, without registering from the pollster.com site. Sorry about that.

  10. Of course the fact that we all know what "whitey tape" means shows that the damage has been done. To true believers, the tape's apparent non-existence is quite beside the point.

  11. More to the point, the non-existence of the tape is proof that the fix was in in. See Krugman today. But don't read Billy Kristol. Lala land again. 18 more columns, and counting. I hope he takes a long holiday break.
    .

Also, the Republican base already seems to be gearing up to regard defeat not as a verdict on conservative policies, but as the result of an evil conspiracy. A recent Democracy Corps poll found that Republicans, by a margin of more than two to one, believe that Mr. McCain is losing “because the mainstream media is biased” rather than “because Americans are tired of George Bush.”
    .
And Mr. McCain has laid the groundwork for feverish claims that the election was stolen, declaring that the community activist group Acorn — which, as Factcheck.org points out, has never “been found guilty of, or even charged with” causing fraudulent votes to be cast — “is now on the verge of maybe perpetrating one of the greatest frauds in voter history in this country, maybe destroying the fabric of democracy.” Needless to say, the potential voters Acorn tries to register are disproportionately “other folks,” as Mr. Chambliss might put it.

(Have to say the blockquote formatting is much better than the previous instance of Swampland comments. Now to go insert periods to create paragraph breaks...)

  12. An elder, senior statesman who would like to be President should not act like a Chevy Chase wannabe.

  13. AM - the video still isn't coming up, at least for me.

  14. If you go to KT's link for McCain's star turn, you'll find the Olberman video beside it.

  15. No embed support here, I think.

    .
It's funny enough. The imitation could be better.

  16. All in good fun. But it is instructive to remember that Olberman was among the media who pretty much liked McCain, and then became disgusted by his campaign behavior. KO has really been no different in his outrage than Joe Klein - he just says it on the teevee.

I agree with kathy: "I thought the McCain skits were helpful to him." But never forget that McCain earned the outrage. He chose to run a campaign that inflamed his base every way they could, and divided us at a time of national crisis. He doesn't get a do-over.

Preview: a long lost friend. Ah, but I see the bot saved me temporarily from embarrassment.

  18. So you think voters will flee Obama based on a Keith Olbermann parody? Why else should the McCain camp be gleeful over this? They're way too desperate to care about Olbermann. Or am I taking this too seriously?

    .
Boy, I do miss that preview guy. He was a good and trusted friend.

  20. Just because I agree with a lot of Olbermann's politics, it does not prevent me from thinking he is a self-absorbed clown.

  21. Yes, Matt, you are taking this too seriously.

  22. The funny thing is while KO is definitely over the top he isnt CLOSE to being in Sean Hannity territory but who is the exclusive FoxNews interviewer of the McCain-Palin ticket. SNL can't even parody Hannity because you just can't do over the top any more than he actually is. McCain just holds grudges against anyone who criticizes him. Ill bet he NEVER gives the NYTimes another interview unless its Bill Kristol doing it.

  23. "It's hardly a "whitey" tape or early November surprise but it might be the most gratifying piece of news the McCain campaign has received in the past 24 hours."
    .
    AMC,
I truly do not understand this statement. Please clarify. Does the McCain camp feel some how vindicated because SNL did a skit?
    .
I thought Ben did a good job with the parody of Keith. It was over the top, but it was supposed to be. McCain was funny, but than again he does the self depreciation well, always has. Tina of course hit out of the park as usual. Cindy was kinda of stiff each time she was shown (even at the end of the show) they should have given her a speaking line because that smiling and standing silent crap does not work for me.
