Soggy Obama Served Cold

I don't know which advance genius thought of an outdoor rally in Chester, Pennsylvania in late October but it's freeezing here, pouring and knee-deep in mud. Obama, who spoke for more than 35 minutes before a dripping crowd of 9,000, with no umbrella, hat or gloves, should take a lesson from William Henry Harrison.

JNS, the World Series players and I feel your pain. It's particularly not fair since before yesterday we had not had rain for nearly a month.

Harrison talked for almost 3 hours...but your point is well taken. As for mud, that should be no surprise given the GOP tactics this semester.

JNS - no jinxing! Besides, if you were a supporter would you want to find that you'd endured the elements and got a shortened speech? Getting cold doesn't really affect your health unless you're already run down (oops)
    .
In January of 2005 I waited outside in below zero weather for a couple of hours for a chance to see the Red Sox trophy. Really, really, froze my feet. Wouldn't have given up the chance though. Love conquers all.

hey andy- thanks for hanging in.

Kathy we'll see if this works at home tonight. I have my doubts. I guess I tweaked MS and JC once too often.

  • 6

JNS loved the AP story over the weekend...was branded with the scarlet M.

  • 7

He's just taking a lesson from Bill (I feel your pain) Clinton!

  • 8

I heard on FOX/Drudge that Obama collected all the umbrellas and redistributed them to the people who didn't plan for rain. True?

  • 9

JNS, I feel for you -- sounds like you're REALLY ready for this to be over. So are we, but I'll grant that you're experiencing more direct hardship than I am in my comfy desk chair.
Hang in there -- we appreciate it! And I hope that you're getting some edification out of seeing history from the front row.

    At least Woodstock was warm...

Obama should look into Traveller's insurance.

JNS - wasn't there a little contretemps about the historicity of Harrison catching cold from his inaugural apropos of McCain's age and Sarah Palin? Harrison was of course succeeded by Tyler, considered one of the worst Presidents ever - before the modern era.
    .
But, the point of my post (and I have one) is that it is a myth that Harrison died because he caught cold while giving his inaugural speech. In fact, he did not become ill for three weeks after that, and undoubtedly caught a cold from one of the many office seekers who pressed upon him after his election, which was exacerbated by the pressures of office.

This has been another edition of trivial knowledge brought to you by Mr. Know-it-all.

pourmecoffee - can. not. be. true. Is there no limit to what they will make up? I can see Obama asking folks to see that the elderly have an umbrella though.
    .
Philly.com says McCain/Palin have cancelled outdoors rallies (they had 3 schedule for indoors though.
    .
JNS - Philly.com says that the schools were cancelled in Chester PA so parents could bring their kids to this historic event. Did you see many kids there?

I'm joking. I'm going to do it even harder in KT's post. I enjoy it.

JNS links to Sweet (who I like) who links back to JNS. Interestingly
neither mentions, even in passing, what BHO said.

kathy: In January of 2005 I waited outside in below zero weather for a couple of hours for a chance to see the Red Sox trophy.

Heh. Did the Black Friday thing a couple of years back. Waited in 20 degree weather (no rain, thankfully) from about 5pm on Thanksgiving day to the store open at 6am. Being 48th in line, I didn't get everything I wanted, but got a few things...

Thirty-five minutes? I'm sure the crowd appreciated the co-misery.

ivb - are you PA? don't think I knew that. I'm trying to figure out if the weather vis a vis the Series helps Obama. If Philly doesn't win tonight (which i hope they do) then maybe Selig gives the teams a day off as originally scheduled, so fans don't have to have a delay of the game tomorrow for Obama's half hour show (ABC showing regular programming. may their ratings perish)

    Wow into moderation I go.
I never play scratch off but I am starting to get why people like it. Scrolling down to see if a comment posts or goes into the box is exciting!

    Jay,
Please get a flu shot. The last time I got really sick was after waiting outside for 5 hours to get into an Obama rally. February. In Boston. At least it wasn't raining - that would have killed me.

  • 21

Okay thanks JNS. The story is the weather. Just wanted to make sure I understood.

  • 22

It would be AWESOME if something DIFFERENT happened, like Obama TRANSFORMED into a GIGANTIC KILLING MACHINE and started to blast McCain/Palin signs. If that happens, you should definitely blog about it, maybe even post some pictures.

  • 23

JNS - yeah, but if the kid lives long enough s/he'll know s/he was present at the pivot of history.

  • 24

So, good grief, somebody hold an umbrella over the man! This is not the time to prove how macho he is.

  • 25

Isn't this the first time Obama's really had to deal with rain in all the outdoor events he's had? Maybe a million people enjoyed good weather, and a few thousand will have had the rain. It won't be lost on Pennsylvanians that he kept to his schedule and McCain bowed out.
