Maverick--or Rogue?

Ben  Smith reports rising tension between Sarah Palin and her handlers:

Four Republicans close to Palin said she has decided increasingly to disregard the advice of the former Bush aides tasked to handle her, creating occasionally tense situations as she travels the country with them. Those Palin supporters, inside the campaign and out, said Palin blames her handlers for a botched rollout and a tarnished public image — even as others in McCain's camp blame the pick of the relatively inexperienced Alaska governor, and her public performance, for McCain's decline.

"She's lost confidence in most of the people on the plane," said a senior Republican who speaks to Palin, referring to her campaign jet. He said Palin had begun to "go rogue" in some of her public pronouncements and decisions.

Which the McCain campaign quickly denies:

"Unnamed sources with their own agenda will say what they want,” Schmitt said. “But from Gov. Palin down we have one agenda, and that's to win on Election Day."

UPDATE: Smith returns for Round Two, quoting unnamed sources in "McCain's camp" saying that Palin's a "diva."

It's hard to remember back to 1996 but is this about the point in that campaign that they started eating themselves? Is this early for this kind of knifing in the back?
For some reason I thought it would wait until after the debacle.

    KT,

I think you should rethink your assessment that the McCain campaign issued a denial. They in fact did NOT deny the things said in the Politico article because no where in the Politico article did they say that anybody was trying to lose the election. The Politico article just pointed out that many of them have their own ideas on how to accomplish it and its starting to show. Just something to think about

Pslin has about another 11 days in the spotlight. Then, for all of the talk about a talkshow, she's back to her full-time job as Governor of Alaska. Her recent policy speech about special needs kids was well delivered, well presented, and well thought out. If she stops her shrillness (sexist?) and divisiveness, her positives will be better at the end of this exercise.

And... If she spends the next 2 years finding her voice, and boning up on policy, she will be a formidable national figure. Remember, G W Bush didn't know about foreign policy until tutored by Rice. Oh, maybe that's not such a good example.

Obviously, the feeding frenzy has begun.
    .
I think the "old school", that uses divisiveness and hatred as political tools will rally behind her. This part of the GOP, I think, given their near complete detachment from reality, will eventually devolve into a fringe group.
    .
What I'm hoping for is that the GOP, if it's able to reconstitute itself, well depart from the McCarthy-ish and Klan-ish strategies of the past and move into a post-racial conservative political force.
    .
I guess we'll just have to wait and see which side wins the GOP mantle.

It wouldn't be the first time Palin has turned on someone who elevated her politcial prospects and stabbed them in the back.

These are the reasons people are (usually) thoroughly vetted before being put on a national campaign ticket.

  • 6

You know, I used to think nothing would be sweeter than winning.
I was wrong. Watching the wingnuts lose is actually even more satisfying.
    .
    Schadenfreude - it's what's for dinner.

  • 7

She's a reptilian rogue dominatrix social climbing wannabe...

  • 8

With all the grace and charm of Leona Helmsley...

  • 9

Glad to have you back, Jenn.
    '
I dunno. This may actually be keeping in character for Palin since it was McCain, himself, that introduced her by saying she was a woman who would not be told to sit down. Maybe she's tired of being told to sit down.

  • 10

So if it's between Jindahl and Pailn for control of the wingnuts my money is on "Bobby". The true believers are looking past the obvious flaws in Palin because right now they must.
After the election, not so much.

  • 11

I know it's early in the voting, but I think Jenn wins the thread, already, with the "Schadenfreude" zing.

    PNNTO:
    .
Is Jindal a real wingnut? That far right?
    .
I've always assumed he's been more centrist, not having heard really wacko stuff attributed to him or his handlers.

  • 14

Unloading Scherer wasn't part of the site maintenance? Damn.

  • 15

Well of course schmitt is going to deny it -- "Yeah, she's totally out of control and impossible to work with. You can only polish a turd so much, apparently."

Given the wingnuts propensity to change (that being an imaginary number), it is far more likely that the moderates and goldwater conservatives will form their own party, than it is for the wingnuts to do so.

Barring a popular uprising within the ranks, anyway. That would be very messy, potentially. And great TV.

  • 16

This is not the team of people I want running the White House.

  • 17

    dagnabbit!
    .
Not a cuss word, or even harshness, and I'm still being "moderated"!

  • 18

How many times do you see a lot of unity on a sinking ship?
And frankly, I think they're both right. She has been a disaster for the ticket, and they have mismanaged her. I think my mother said it best: Sarah Palin captures the flaws of the McCain campaign. Her candidacy has been erratic, lacking in substance and precision, unpleasantly aggressive, and race-baiting. But those flaws would be present in the campaign even if she were still in Alaska. She just makes them a little more visible.

  • 19

For some reason, my comment in the previous thread is still awaiting moderation. So I'll repeat what I said (post-crash) on one of the pre-crash threads (which oddly enough, I could access and comment on using my old bookmark - which won't allow access to the new threads...and on which my old sign-in was still working).
I know what happened vis-a-vis the server crash: A large, angry knife-wielding black man noticed the McCain sticker on Scherer's car, and carved a backwards "B" into the intertoobs machinery to teach all the swampers a lesson.

53: uh oh. This can only mean KT's gone into W mode. No more habeas corpus, no more civil rights, no more Mr. Nice Guy. er...

  • 22

jenn I heard it was a Bachmann supporter who did the carving.

  • 23

rose83: Agree. Also McCain spent months running as the experience candidate before springing Palin without warning, then shielded her from the press, which got everyone curious, and then let her do that Couric interview. Practically designed to highlight how unready she is.

  • 24

What the hedubblehockeysticks good is it to have "moderation" when totally innocuous statements are being made.
    .
I'm trying to work with this, but how can I if there's no rhyme or reason to it!
