I sometimes wonder if we haven't all massively underestimated what a major shift it would be to have a female president — or even female major party nominee — and the sort of backlash that could go along with it.

UPDATE AT A FEW MINUTES BEFORE 3 P.M.: Several commenters alert us to the horrifying news of a hostage situation at Clinton's Rochester, N.H., headquarters. I'm in the Miami Airport, where it is blaring over CNN. They are saying the man appears to have a bomb strapped to his chest with duct tape. Clinton has cancelled a scheduled speech before the DNC.
